I think that's precisely it, the chorus is so limp that the whole song sounds like it's still in demo stage because of it. For a band who I've always found to have somewhat of a niche in "stadium anthemic" kind of pop tracks, this is a really odd single choice.

Its US iTunes success is brilliant! It's slipping in the UK now but #2 is still at ~36% of them. It should manage top 5 at least next Friday I think.

I will say this though, Niall has been under-used on the past albums.

This is so true and i'm not saying this as a Niall stan but his voice has grown so much. I know because his knee operation he couldn't work on the Four album as much as he wanted but damn that guy has a brilliant voice.

I've always thought Niall's been quite underused actually, his voice is pretty damn good and the fact he's mostly had the same amount of solos as Louis is quite embarrassing. Nothing against Louis of course but his voice is by FAR the weakest.
I'm really getting used to this. It's getting better with more listens. I get what Robot is saying with his 'Chains' comparison but I'd say it's that with a strange remix of 'Pony' by Ginuwine (bizarrely so)

SLAY!

Never mind Chains, this channels so much The Police/early Maroon 5. The verses guitar strings are almost like Roxanne.

Hmmm, mixed feelings on this one. It is pretty good and pretty instant, but I agree that it feels a bit watered down. I was also hoping that they'd switch up their sound a bit this era but I feel like this could've been released early last era. Regardless, I'm hoping it will grow on me and I'm glad to see them maintain their success without Zayn (its lead on iTunes is unbelievable, even for them), although I do have a feeling this will be extremely front loaded.

"Drag Me Down" debuted at #1 on Spotify in Canada, Brazil, USA, Argentina, France, Ireland, Italy, Philippines, Poland and #3 in UK!

Zayn has said something about the song:

@zaynmalik

Big love. :) x

Awww that's nice to see! Even if he probably secretly hates the song, it's nice to see he's supporting them.
Apologies to Calum & Adam in advance for what I'm about to write (I'm so glad you've both done your Buzzrates already :angel: )... but I honestly don't notice Zayn's absence in this song, vocally speaking. The remaining 4 are bringing it!

I do agree with you, but only because the song is no nothing-y anyway that even with Zayn he probably couldn't have made it any better because the song itself, as well as the production, is all quite mediocre.

It just feels like this is the stage where they'll become complacent because they know they've got a massive fanbase behind them.
