They haven't actually voted to overturn the suspension. Yet. They have deferred the decision while they carry out a "review" of the process. It is almost certain that the Commons will refuse to confirm the suspension when the time comes, so it is yet another case of the Tories deciding that the rules only apply to others, not themselves.

In the meantime, Rob Roberts, the Tory MP thrown out of the Tory party after being found to have sexually harassed members of staff, has been allowed back into the party although he has not (yet) had the party whip restored.

Awful stuff but not at all a surprise from this Godawful party. I'm actually the tiniest bit surprised the majority for it wasn't higher and actually a handful of Tories did have the guts to go against it such is my view of that party.

Is there any hope of the backlash and anger being so strong that they do another one of their famous U-turns on this?

There are reports that a lot of Tory MPs have received a large volume of complaints, including from people who haven't contacted them before. In other words, it's not just people who send at least one complaint every week! It may even be that Keir Starmer's habit of low-key responses to corruption has paid off. He has responded to this one. Because it is fairly easy to understand, and without the Covid excuse of having to act fast, it may be having more of an impact with the public.

Really understand why the Government enforced the whip on this one, seems a really miscalculated decison that the ordinary joe "doesn't care". Really can't see this one ending well. The best bit of it all is the MP got a vote and of course, voted not suspend himself

Disgusting, vile, despicable party, and to think people supported Mad May or Blojo over Corbyn!! INCREDIBLE! Like a tinpot dictatorship at this point. Thanks, extreme centrists x
This is a step too far even for them, an absolutely transparent way to ensure that they are above the law and consequences don't matter. There is no hope for any of us if this does not dent their popularity, the opposition better not back down on this.
Well I gave up hope for that kind of justice when the fraudulent prorogation of Parliament in September 2019 seemed to bring an INCREASE in the Tory vote share from what I recall of the polls of the time. Oh and or course the GE result of December 2019. This is exactly what Johnson's Government was expected to do.
This bunch of out-and-out crooks have today voted to overturn Owen Paterson's suspension.

Angela Rayner is 100% correct, they are absolute scum of the highest order.

But calling the scum is much worse don’t you know

As Bernadette Devlin once said ‘When we break the law we go to jail, when the government breaks the law they change the law’!
Weirdly the godawful Daily Mail have handed their front page over to saying that this vote it’s shameful and rightly highlighting that Paterson is a crook. Stopped clock right twice a day comes to mind.

There were a lot of people on Twitter yesterday saying that Labour MPs who had pairing arrangements should have ignored them and voted anyway. I don't agree. Had they done so, today's front pages would have been all about Labour shenanigans rather than Tory corruption.
Agreed - pairing is absolutely fine. In fact it's an admirable thing when undertaken properly - mind you some the Tories have been known to cheat and vote when their opposition pair has been off and expected them to abstain!

Agreed - take the moral high ground & let the Tories own this corruption.

It'll probably give them a boost in the polls tho. Gotta love the British public, ugh.

Apparently U turn incoming.... let's see the full details.

Cowards. Barely even a day of pushback before the U-Turn.

Good stuff, really, but this shouldn't be standing. Paterson should be out the door tomorrow and the rest of them put up to far higher standards, not that anything like that will happen, they're just going to get better at hiding it.

Cummings and a few other suggesting that this was all a front to push through changes to protect Boris and others from any claims in the future. Really don't know who advises them as they are truly terrible. They really missed the boat on this one (again).

They should really make publish lists of paired MPs and lists of MPs not even in the chamber in order to break down whether an abstention is meaningful or not. Or, of course, allow votes to be cast in absentia. Of course, both cases would be unhelpfully make parliament more transparent and close down a route to get out of difficult votes which is why the government have a vested interest in keeping the opaque system.
