The first batch of fines are being sent out tomorrow to MPs in partygate scandal according to the media. Will be interesting to see if both Johnson and Sunak both get one as expected and the impact of this.
Impact wiil be very very limited in terms of fresh damage to them - that ship has sailed. It has overall cost them 5-10 points overall in the polls so hopefully cost of living will take more away (They clawed a bit back because of Ukraine, yet again undeservedly)

I'm not so sure. They have been gaining slightly in the polls and the fines could hit them again somewhat. It should keep the pressure on as opposed to them using recent events to try and sweep it under the rug.

Cost of living will hurt them far more in the long run and more consistently, this was about all we could hope for with the fines, not like a mob was about to storm to Number 10 over it.
The Tories will be playing the "culture war" cards with more ferocity to win the next election. Hence, endless bleating on about "wokeness" and gotcha moments for Keir Starmer to talk about gender identity all the time. Expect lots of transphobia and homophobia to be stirred up like the Republicans are doing in the USA (although not with as much quite force).

SSHD is the Secretary of State for the Home Department, i.e. Home Secretary Priti Patel. She has asked her counsel to lie in court (commit perjury) on her behalf.

Good on him for actually calling it out for what it is....when even your own legal people call you a liar....

That's a very interesting and sad story. Hope MPs (mainly conservative) will stop dogwhistling transphobia because of this. Let's see...
Tory MP Jamie Wallis has come out as the first openly trans Member of Parliament. The statement -

For some reason I read that as Jim Wells and nearly choked on my tea!

A day after one of their MPs comes out as Trans, and on the Trans day of visibility it breaks that the Gov is dropping its plans for a conversion therapy ban

Personally although I think LGBT conversion therapy is abhorrent, I struggle to think it should be banned for willing adult participants (depending on its nature) but of course the fact that the Tories have betrayed what they said would definitely happen proves what lack of morality this Government have as I do know it's very important issue for some people.

Oh they've apparently U turned on the U turn and will ban gay conversion therapy but not trans conversion therapy. At least have consistency and don't further scapegoat one element of society even more by creating the wedge between LGB and T. Arses!

Conversion therapy is dangerous and could cause serious harm to individuals whether they are willing or not. Lots of people are coerced into it by family members or religious communities against their own free will. It also sends out a message that this type of therapy is acceptable despite the fact it can cause more harm to a persons mental health.

I watched Question Time last night. Anyone who thinks the effects from Partygate is over are wrong. Virtually all the audience agreed that they don’t believe the government followed the rules and many agreed he should resign.

people can be converted into any old bullshit through propaganda brainwashing that they are told will save their immortal soul. And then we get stuff like the Jonestown massacre. There's always going to be a thin line between religious belief or other beliefs, and people using that belief to influence others in negative ways because they feel totally convinced they are doing the right thing. Ultimately though, you can't stop adults making choices that involve what is essentially brainwashing/seeing the light (delete according to view) unless you ban everything that isn't science-based fact. Which will never happen.

So, my own view is that children should be the focus and not be indoctrinated into anything wherever possible, at least outside the home. Policing parenting is going to be very very difficult to enforce unless there is physical violence. They should be children until they reach the age when they can choose whatever the hell they want to be based on what they understand of the world by that point. I knew shit about anything, including what I wanted to be, until I was older.

Agree with the above. It does come close to state stanction forcing of beliefs about what is acceptable or not - and if religions are saying that homosexuality is wrong (which major strands of Christianity, Islam and Judaism clearly do) do you go as far as to ban the religions themselves? If someone wants to "pray the gay away" which is complete bollocks in my view and they are an adult then that is their choice. You can wholly disapprove of something but allow it as long as it doesn't break other existing laws.

But many of the methods these places use is both physical and psychological torture. Both as an adult and a child. You don’t enter willingly into this, even as an adult, it’s through pressure from society or from a religious fundamentalist yelling every day that there is something wrong with you and that you can be fixed. Both are entirely 110% factually incorrect.

A lot needs to go into changing the attitudes of the structures that funnel people down this path also, but it is absolutely right to cut off the destination and make it illegal in all cases for all people. There are zero benefits from doing it. You cannot change who you fundamentally are and these „therapies“ use cruel methods to literally try to torture it out of you. They have high suicide rates and have a „success“ rate that is effectively zero. It is an abhorrent and disgusting practice that has no place in a modern society

if the law is banning specific torture brainwashing practices ("beating the gay away") I don;t think anyone would disagree with a ban on that. The devil is in the detail. You can't ban, for example, people wanting to believe that such and such an organisation or belief will make them happy and take away all their problems when someone is an adult. It's the whole basis of free speech and democracy: the right to believe what you want to believe - as long as you are not hurting someone else doing it. Where do you even start on that? Same with parents with fixed sets of beliefs, how do you police it? I, for example, never wanted to be gay, and I lost my youth due to being unable to be happy about myself. Happily I'm smart enough to recognise bullshit when I see it and didn't get sucked into fake "cures" and the like, but a better way of spending money would be to provide positive support for people that need it, whenever they need it, rather than extra dosh for police forces to try and work out what is or isn't brainwashing or torture, because they arent skilled to make those sorts of decisions. They can barely police themselves when it comes to outdated attitudes.

Personally, I wouldn't trust a Tory to be able to write a law that wouldn't end up causing injustices somewhere along the line, I've seen too many examples in Local Government of their utter lack of forethought, but maybe that's just me being too cynical from decades of having to watch them repeat the same mistakes time after time. But I am in favour of supporting people to be free from misguided people with agendas telling them what will be good for them. Everyone, from an early age, should be taught to question everything that isn't obviously factual, but also be taught to recognise that people who question obvious facts are propagandists. Sadly, that's not a thing for everyone.
