Zac Goldsmith's constituents chose to oust him in favour of a Lib Dem on Thursday but he will be appointed to the House of Lords and be made minister from there too.

I'm not sure what I respect less: being rewarded for failing to get re-elected and losing your seat, or taking the Nicky Morgan route of simply bypassing the whole democracy thing altogether.

Any guesses the same fate would've happened to Boris Johnson had the party won a majority but he lost his seat? (n.b. this was very plausible if Labour still went backwards with middle aged men but had better turnout amongst young people, ethnic minorities and graduates).

Can't see Dennis Skinner going into the Lords.

Can't see him *wanting* to! :P

He's too ill. Couldn't even go to his count and they say his clothes are hanging off him now and he looks very ill. May not be around longer.

That could have been a major reason why he wasn't re-elected.

Yeh I can't see him living too much longer now. He's a decent age though, absolutely legend obviously.

Queen's Speech today is... well, mostly a repeat of the election campaign.

Pledge for healthcare and NHS that looks good by comparison to the previous Tory years, looks bad when compared to the New Labour times. We'll have to see if they stick to this promise to enshrine it in law.

Zero emissions target is still 2050. The climate won't wait.

All in all a good Queen's Speech and Boris is off to a great start.
What about that terrible emissions target of 2050?

No worries, as parts of the planet become uninhabitable the massive surge in migration will drive populist/far-right movements and help to keep the Tories in power for the rest of the century, so they'll just say they've met it and say 'the public doesn't want to be bored with silly details like actual facts'.

Polls have repeatedly said that global warming is very low on the priorities of most voters. Most care about Brexit then the economy, tax rates, NHS etc etc.

I mean why should we for example with now no children to survive us, care what happens to the planet in 50 years' time when we'll both be dead?

That's the spirit!

It's the truth though. Was a very low consideration in this election.

I meant your attitude to treating the planet as a rental car, and fuck the next people who have to use it.

I still think that global warming is natural though and not man-made. Heck, even the US President doesn't believe in global warming.
