When Jessie performs her songs it has a much bigger effect than radio AirPlay. The album had a longer chart run and sold more after her very late performance on Graham Norton than it did when it was initially released.

 

Jessie is such a talented singer-songwriter. I don't see why Ed Sheeran/James Bay/ Sam Smith's music is so much more popular - it's not that different (despite being a different gender).

Because you only need to sell about 4000 copies in a day to get there on iTunes and the sales chart is becoming increasingly irrelevant?

Record labels have no rest with OA/OS.

 

Clearly radio/media are still very conservative towards new world. And I think loads of held-back releases just helped streaming to become as dominant as it is. If record labels will still hold back releases they'll kill the downloads even more in the longer period, but it could be paid up in short terms.

 

I think holding back for 2 weeks or so is the best strategy at the moment, with a MASS promo on release week.

I think radio is responding well to OAOS - well, they've got no choice really. But it still isn't working for anyone other than acts who already big, or the odd exception like R. City (which still has Adam Levine on it).

 

I don't think it makes any difference in the uptake on streaming, but I agree holding back 2 or 3 weeks would be a good compromise rather than going back to 2 months again. But they can't carry on like this. They're clearly losing more sales with so many DOA releases than they were losing from piracy.

 

I'm going to be really interested to see how the total sales figures tally up for "Body On Me" vs "Poison" as an example. If "Body On Me" winds up selling more despite not peaking in the top 20 then you might be able to make a case for it working, but if it sells less and peaks lower, what is the point? And does anyone think that it wouldn't have gone top 5 had they held it back?

 

Also it's not like records which are held back are all crashing out of the chart quickly afterwards, like they did in the physical era. I was worried Sigala had waited to long - but it's spent 5 weeks in the top 5 so far so has it really been hurt by being held back?

 

People say "but other countries manage fine with OAOS" - but the U.S. is completely different in that it can take several months to make a record smash, and in Europe the charts aren't as important to the music industry as in the UK.
