The Bieber tune is only number one on iTunes downloads. At Amazon, which is at least as big a portal, the NHS track is 1 & 2. I don't know how to calculate them combined but it's a lot closer than the kworb data implies.

The Kworb data only shows the iTunes sales.

Amazon doesn't have a big share in the sales, iTunes has a share of around 60-70% of the total sales (not counting streaming). All the others 30-40%.

Then comes streaming where Justin Bieber is way ahead.

But if it's close on iTunes and NHS is 1&2 on Amazon it could make a difference added to the fact that the media will report it if it's no1 in tomorrow's midweeks!

well this is only the iTunes discussion, but if NHS has a 2000 lead (lost 3000! from Saturday to Sunday) I'm pretty sure they won't be number 1 by tomorrow, where more and more streaming data will be added to the chart, and NHS has close to nothing on streaming.

You sure about that Ben? If you're right with that figure then Bieber is home and hosed. I understood Amazon and iTunes accounted for roughly the same share of the download market.

Yes I'm pretty sure, there was a report a couple of years ago, but of course the market could have changed since then, but before the addition of streaming to the chart, the official chart was almost a carbon copy of the iTunes chart and that says it all.

Annoyingly I can't seem to post this link. Sure you'll get round it!

I'm talking about digital singles. Amazon sells a lot of physical albums too, while iTunes doesn't, Apple doesn't even offer physicals to buy, this makes the difference, the report doesn't say how the market looks like with digital singles, only the full music market. I'm still pretty sure iTunes has the same share in digital singles.

So Apple has a 26,7% in the full market and that's only digitals. Amazon has a share of 27% digital + physicals (where I can easily imagine the majority of it are physical albums, vinyl.)

That makes sense. I'd also guess that the slide in iTunes share of the total music sales market is more than offset by the parallel rise in popularity Apple's subscription streaming service, which again isn't accounted for by iTunes, Amazon or Google download stats.

Does anyone know what proportion of total 'sales' (as measured for the charts) are made up by streaming nowadays?

In the total sales around 70%. Higher in the lower positions and lower in the upper positions (let's say top 10).

But if I remember well Love Yourself was the first number 1 that had more streaming points than actual sales in his total.

Wow, so 70-80% - have I read that right? I had no idea it was that big a percentage!

itunes will always account for more sales than amazon, play music etc because of the fact it's so popular (on every apple device) compared to other music stores.

Official Charts Press Release - does this add up?

The NHS Choir continues to lead way in the race for this year's Christmas Number 1, Official Charts can confirm.

The race is far from over yet though, as their lead on yesterday's update over Justin Bieber's Love Yourself (which was based on sales only) has reduced to just over 2,000 combined sales and streams.

Bieber's previous single, Sorry, has also climbed back up to complete the Top 3.

The Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir's A Bridge Over You - a mash-up of Coldplay's Fix You and Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel - is being released in support of the NHS, with proceeds going to charities Mind and Carers UK

Please see this thread!

Thanks Joseph - so we can be reasonably sure that some streaming data is missing?

Apologies for only being a part-timer and asking obvious questions - I only pop in here because I often have a punt on the Xmas #1 market and like to make sure that I'm not doing my dough!

No worries :D Typically with midweek updates, at least the previous day's streaming data is missing (for Spotify and Apple Music which make up the bulk of it), so today's update will most likely include Friday's streaming but not Saturday's ^_^

 16. Louisa Johnson - Forever Young but don't underestimate that as she's probably selling bucketloads of physicals
£375 back off £300, ive never bet on my life but this seems like a no-brainer. He will be number 1 and by some distance.

Paddy power this morning but those odds are drifting. 1/5 now.

It seems like it was not really worth betting that much money then if all you get is £75 more, the bookmakers will hope that Justin Bieber gets the #1.

Out of an interest what does 1/5 mean in terms of odds? is it when you bet £1 you get a £5 reward? I've never been much of a gambler so I don't understand it too well.
