They're not the instantly big sellers like they used to be, but there's still a place for them as they rack up decent trickle sales.

I'm sure when Coldplay/Muse/Rihanna/Beyonce etc. release a greatest hits that is properly marketed, they'll be big instant and trickle sellers.

I don't know. That's what I thought about Maroon 5 but their greatest hits bombed

But it was a hashed together, non promoted half arsed cash in release without the added benefit of a new hit single to aid sales. Had they TV advertised etc., I'm certain it would have done well!

Feist - Let It Die - Silver - Released: 2004

Marina and the Diamonds - Electra Heart - Gold - Released: 2012

'No Diggity' failed to reach the Top 100 of 1996, meaning sales of less than 150k and at least 450k sold in downloads/streams, including 128k in 2013 alone!

'Livin' on a Prayer' sold an estimated 305k in 1986 and a further 35k in 1987, meaning it is on its way to being a million 'seller' with a current total of 940k! That includes 57k sold in 2008, 73k in 2009, 55k in 2011, 55k in 2012 (probably similar totals in the years in between but that's what I can find).

'Sweet Nothing' had sold 491k by the end of 2013, meaning 109k since. It is Calvin's 9th Platinum single.

'Trouble' sold less than the required 73k to make the 2000 YE, meaning at least 127k since. Next to pass Silver should be 'Christmas Lights' (by this Christmas probably) and 'Talk' (which had sold 58k by the end of 2006 but has probably racked up a lot of download/streams).

'White Noise' sold 439k in 2013, meaning 161k since.

'Dog Days Are Over' sold 307k by the end of 2010, meaning 293k since. 19 singles from the 21st century have now passed 600k without ever reaching the Top 10 but this is the first to have never made the Top 20:

Adele - Set Fire to the Rain (#11)

Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (#11)

Birdy - Skinny Love (#17)

Bruno Mars - Marry You (#11)

Christina Perri - A Thousand Years (#11)

Disclosure ft. Sam Smith - Latch (#11)

Ed Sheeran - I See Fire (#13)

Ed Sheeran - Photograph (#15)

Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks (#18)

Florence & the Machine - Dog Days Are Over (#23)

Idina Menzel - Let It Go (#11)

Imagine Dragons - Demons (#13)

Imagine Dragons - Radioactive (#12)

Jason Mraz - I Won't Give Up (#11)

Jason Mraz - I'm Yours (#11)

Jay Z & Linkin Park - Numb/Encore (#14)

Lady Antebellum - Need You Now (#15)

Mumford & Sons - I Will Wait (#12)

Train - Hey, Soul Sisters (#18)

'Crazy' sold 869k by the end of 2007, meaning 331k since.

'You Can Do It' sold 92k by the end of 2005, meaning 108k since.

'Since U Been Gone' sold 172k by the end of 2006, meaning 228k since. It's Kelly's fourth best seller.

'Little Me' is Little Mix' 9th certified single. 'Change Your Life' should be next.

'Ride Wit Me' sold 185k in 2001, meaning 215k since.

'Good Time' sold 300k in 2012, meaning 100k since.

'What Now' is the 37th (!!) certified single from Rihanna!

'Free Fallin'' only sold about 10k originally, so 210k in total.

That's really impressive for Dog Days!

Yay for Since U Been Gone and Good Time going gold. Two of my all time favourites that both deserved more than a #5 peak.

I'm guessing that Bangarang and Little Lion Man must both be pretty close to joining that club though.

The Elvis Presley 'Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite' Silver Certification was given for the version released on 27th April, 1998 which had an extra five tracks recorded backstage after the show had finished.

Feist - Let It Die - Silver - Released: 2004

Marina and the Diamonds - Electra Heart - Gold - Released: 2012

That Feist certification is a little random? Obviously I'm aware of how well 'The Reminder' sold in the UK despite the #28 peak, but 'Let It Die' took almost four years to actually chart (peaking at a lowly #121 in 2008 and for only 3 weeks). I wouldn't have pegged 'Let It Die' it as a trickle seller personally, given how 'The Reminder' contains her only hit ('1234') and is her best seller by quite some distance, but this is interesting nevertheless.

Also, 'Electra Heart' had sold 89,676 up until 28th March last year - the week that 'Froot' came out.

The best-selling single of 2014 - ‘Happy’ by @pharrell has gone 4x Platinum. That's 2.4 million!

To Brian Quinn.

Is it really necessary to quote ALL the certifications if you only want to refer to one certificate?

Surely it is easier (and more readable) to do this:

Elvis Presley - Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite - Silver - Released: 1973

Makes more sense to me.

Pharrell Williams has now gained the first 4x Platinum single of all time in the UK! What an achievement!

Great achievement but it never deserved to sell that well. Such an average song!

Apart from Candle In The Wind '97, which is at 9x Platinum.

The sound of silence - Simon & Garfunkel's biggest seller in the digital age, with 209,022 sales (including from streams).

So why has it not been awarded a BPI Silver Disc?

Totally forgot about that one. The first this century anyway!

Haven't got a scooby doo. I felt the same about 18 Months and Everything I Do (no certification at all and not quite 3x platinum despite over 1.8m sales, respectively)

As regards Simon and Garfunkel The Sound of Silence the BPI say,

Re the Simon & Garfunkel query below – Alan Jones is right, it has passed 200k but that’s across several versions listed on the Official Charts database. As the certifications are automatically generated off the ‘main’ version (usually the one that has the most sales attributed to it, and is still definitely active) that’s why it hasn’t yet been allocated a Silver award – it’s not far off on that one however, so I think we’ll not have to wait long for it to go Silver anyway.

So does that imply that sales of the same track from different albums are not combined, just the main version is used?

Surely a modern computer should be able to total all versions? Alan Jones seems to be able to do that task.

Perhaps they treat live versions differently.

Spelling makes a difference!

I contacted BPI and got this reply.

Thanks for the email re Michael Jackson and the below. We’ll be working on the awards database in the second half of the year and are hoping to put in place a system that, where possible, adds Official Charts-era sales onto previous certifications so they can be updated.

Just like the album updates earlier this year! Expect DON'T STOP TILL YOU GET ENOUGH to be certified GOLD when combined.

But it wouldn't be Gold would it? As they only count sales after 1994 right?

Maybe, maybe not. I went to the BPI's database and it says Bridge over Troubled Water is 10x Platinum, even though it got a 2x Platinum certification only last year
