388. Rachel Platten - Better Place

It's doing reasonable right now, it's not had any promotion / video release yet so I'm happy to see it climbing at a decent speed considering only HAC are supporting it so far. I'm still sad how much streaming cost 'Stand By You' from being a massive hit, I mean it went top #3 on iTunes and was top #10 on iTunes for two weeks but peaked low due to streaming and airplay. Rachel is currently #30 on HAC radio and her update yesterday was (+0.009) :kink:

Must be the biggest death effect since Michael Jackson himself :o How does this compare anyway, did MJ even have this kind of dominance?

I don't think so... but, digital sales were not nearly as big in 2009. Especially with Prince's target audience.

I could be completely wrong, I know he had a enormous spike, I just don't remember him taking up the whole top 15?

Incredible that Prince has the Top 21 singles at the moment, plus 15 of the Top 20 albums (Including the entire Top 6!).

I was at the Mall earlier and they were playing back to back Prince also there were reports yesterday of people waiting in line for hours at the few remaining record stores we have here to buy anything Prince related.

I'd actually say that the reason Prince is dominating iTunes this much is because the sales climate has become so dire, which means huge responses like this will be reflected with higher iTunes positions because of the lower thresholds. That's not to diminish his impact though, surely he'd be dominating iTunes as well if sales were still at their peak.

I think the last time I saw a posthumous sales spike to this degree was probably Whitney Houston's, and sales weren't as prominent that they were during the turn of the decade, so I vouch for this.

Yeah, downloads were definitely higher in 2009 as well. Michael Jackson died right as 'I Gotta Feeling' became a massive hit and must have stayed top 10 on iTunes throughout because it held the #1 on downloads that week and the week after (which was the first full week since he died). And Whitney's death in 2012 was right before the Grammys so a lot of other songs were getting big increases the following night. If Prince isn't available on Spotify that would be another reason he's dominating more than we've ever seen before on iTunes.

Edit: Just checked the June 2009 iTunes thread and, at the peak of the MJ impact, he had 8 of the top 10 on iTunes with the Black Eyed Peas at #2 (I Gotta Feeling) and #7 (Boom Boom Pow).

Showing no signs of slowing here - He now is holding 33 songs in the Top 40 including 19 of the Top 20! Incredible to see.
