It's completely normal for there to be such little activity at this time of year. We were comparatively spoilt last year with Philip George, Kanye West & Tchami

But it's not though... January is traditionally the month where songs from acts with limited fanbases or airplay chart highly because of the smaller level of sales required to do so. While they were arguably getting inflated chart positions as a result, it was infinitely more interesting than the sort of thing we're now facing with streaming of well established and marketed songs dominating.

I've been following the charts since the late 80s and this past 6 months has been the first time ever that I have completely lost interest in them.

you're confusing Flume with Chet Faker :P [they did do a song together [Drop the Game] so i don't blame you]

that is the one I meant, the one with Chet Faker just got his own song conused with that one

A Flume discussion!

His self-titled album is one of the best in my opinion and his remixes are too good as well. Regarding his songs, I would pick "Holding On" as my favourite one and my favourite remix would be the one he made for "Tennis Court" by Lorde. It's a shame that it's not available digitally or on streaming yet though~

I only ever seem to recall that happening with albums really (where we had the likes of All Time Low & Bombay Bicycle Club achieve back to back #1 albums in a nothing period).

Streaming isn't really the issue here either, in the sales chart this month there hasn't really been any high new entries.

I think a fair few artists used to target the Jan release for a shot at a high peak, Victoria Beckham did it with her last single I'm sure.

Pretty much. January was always a relatively good month for chart activity, because all the acts that withheld their release in December because of Xmas would eventually release in January.

Streaming only made things more stagnant and dull. This is not a question of "maybe", its a fact.

But it shouldn't be the reason why no artists are releasing in January. Streaming isn't going to go away, so what exactly are they waiting for? In fact it'll only ever get more difficult.

Little Mix finally hit a new peak with 'Secret Love Song' and managed to actually get higher than #10 (currently sitting at #9).

Ugh. Track Of the Day not benefitting this at all! :drama: TOTD barely has any effect over the weekends. :(

Yeah, it's a shame TOTD has so little effect on weekends, I guess radio has less listeners on the weekend. Youth is in the 59p batch too, so I hoped for a bit more.

Yay for Little Mix being at #9!

Part of the reason the charts are so slow generally is because the major record labels have smaller rosters than they used to. There aren't as many mainstream artists as there used to be - and that's largely down to downloads slowing the chart down. Streaming is just making the problem worse.
It doesn't help that the likes of Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Emeli Sande, Pink, The Saturdays, Justin Timberlake and various others are in the middle of very long hiatus's. None of the above have released an album in nearly 3 years (and over in some cases) now

 The Saturdays being in the same breath and context as all those :heehee:

But surely the overload of songs climbing the charts lessens the 'staleness'?

I personally think the chart is a lot more interesting seeing long running hits being challenged by songs climbing up the chart. I'd much prefer to not know where the next big hit is coming from than have the chart being stupidly predictable.

And, streaming gives songs such as Light It Up their break in the chart, so it's not just aiding the hits such as WDYM?.

They could always be relied on for a solid top ten or two per year :D

They couldn't in 2014. Their singles went to 19 and 38 :'(

i want to die if the saturdays are never going top ten again. my life would be too shit, id rather listen to chasing lights and then jump off a bridge no lie.

Well the problem is it takes songs seemingly forever to climb the charts now and then forever to drop back down so songs are having ridiculously long chart runs with a period of stagnant movement in the middle when the song is at its peak. Radio are too slow to move on from hits and streaming now means someone who found a song in Dec but who is still regularly listening to it in Feb is still contributing 'sales' for it by streaming it. Where as back in the day it would have been purchased in Dec and that would be that persons contribution towards its sales over with.
