I don't LOVE any of the songs there but they're all good. A very controversial set of songs so it's fitting they've all come ~midtable as they seem very love/hate lol.

As we hit the Top 40, my comments are going to turn into essays so apologies in advance! :heehee:

'Who's That Girl?' is kind of underrated in the sense I forget how good it is until I listen to it, but it's still no more than about a 7 for me.

'American Life' used to be too unconventional for my pure pop youth but it's another song that has vastly grown on me in recent years and I consider it one of my favourites. The perfect lead single and one of her absolute best videos, incredible statement, shocking and actually quite scary and horrific when you see all the images of war and children intertwined with the media/audience laughing. The George Bush double at the end is fantastic; something only Madonna could get away with. I also think the rap is meant to be bad; I mean there's no doubt it is hugely ironic so I doubt she was taking it seriously. I heard she wanted Eminem to do the rap and he turned it down, but praised her for doing it herself, or something like that?

'Justify My Love' and 'Erotica' do go hand in hand so it's fitting they both appear next to each other. I agree that the former is Madonna's first proper experimental single and it was quite fortunate that it was released during her peak with the astounding success of The Immaculate Collection and of course the video, which people will have wanted to watch more because of the fact the media/TV didn't want you to see it. Again, the video is one of her best, capturing the song brilliantly as well as showing probably Madonna's best look ever. I ADORE that interview too: Madonna is so effortlessly confident and passionate when she speaks, which helps a lot in being persuaded to agree with her opinion, and she injects the right amount of wit ("yeah, so lucky me" *.*). I don't think the reporter/interviewer was in the wrong/being arrogant/whatever you want to call him though, I think he asked good questions that were the beliefs of many people and it is after all his job to get as much information from an interviewee and ask opposing questions.

As for 'Erotica', I think I prefer the song because it just has that bit more melody. It also turns the controversy up a notch: whilst 'Justify My Love' deals with being honest with your partner and embracing one another and not being afraid to express your sexuality etc. (in shorter terms, dealing with reality), this is much more fantasy-based and I think that's harder for people to accept/get their heads around. Similarly to 'American Life', it was the perfect choice of lead single.

I've had a yo-yo relationship with 'Hollywood' - at first I much preferred it to 'American Life' because it was less 'offensive' to my musical taste, then it started to drift towards the lower end of my Madonna singles rank because I thought it was just a bit basic and didn't leave me feeling much, but now I love it again for the fact the lyrics are just so true. And of course, big up to the MTV snog which I'm pretty sure Xtina is still bitter about getting cut out of photos in the media!

A touch gutted to see American Life just scrape top 40 to be honest. WHAT A BANGER. The Reinvention Tour version is f***ing spectacular. One of her best perfs ever.

Oh Erotica so low :( also Love Profusion, Milles Away, American Life, Hollywood, Girl Gone Wild are all to low....

But YAAY for You'll See still to come!

It is certainly ironic and really shouldn't be taken too seriously I don't think. I love it, totally bonkers and fits with the satire of the song brilliantly. Can't imagine Eminem doing it

Put your troubles down, it's time to celebrate

35. Nothing Really Matters // Ray of Light // 7.69 (3: Bjork, 5: regina // 10: Liamk, notfurlong, mango, jakewild )

The first single from 'Ray of Light' is out. Nothing Really Matters was the fifth and final single from the album and is written about her first daughter Lourdes. It's a song of self-survival to motherhood but also the power of love in the face of loss and grievances. There has to be shout outs to the visuals for the song, not only the utterly stunning music video but also the various live performances that went with the song, including the performance at the Grammys. It is often overshadowed by the other singles off the album and it too has fallen first here but it's a glorious pop song, forever uplifting whilst being tinged with sadness and struggles of hope.

The lead single off M's latest album does decently here helped perhaps by the recentness of the song. Living For Love initially surfaced in demo form before getting revamped and released as the official lead single. A messy release strategy prevented the song from really make serious chart impact and not even that BRIT awards promo could save it from falling. The song features a gospel choir, Alicia Keys and all manners of retro inspired sounds. Controversy surrounded the release as some radio stations refused to play it resulting in fans being outraged by the apparent age-ism against Madonna. The song was made for radio and is one of her most friendly, mass-appealing singles in years so it was with disbelief that it was largely ignored by the mainstream. But none of that matters because it's done well here ~

Crazy For You stormed onto the scene in many ways for Madonna. Her first Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, her 2nd Billboard #1 and a huge chart success across the globe. And it's easy to see why. A dainty pop number, cute and alluring and totally sweet. The song received a lot of love during this rate but was pulled down by a few lowly scores. I can't say it's a song that i've always loved but it's undeniable pop perfection really.

The final single from 'Like A Virgin', Dress You Up is an arcetypal song from that era - lyrically it's about fashion and sex and the duality of the two. It almost didn't make the album due to time constraints, but thankfully it did because it's pretty much a big classic for her now. It has been performed multiple times on tour, including on the most recent one and it certainly got the crowd SWAYING. Annoyingly catchy, brilliantly glistening production and soaring vocals, a fantastic song all round.

Finally in this set we have Holiday another tour favourite for Madonna and it's easy to see why because in terms of her classics it's perhaps her most joyous, uplifting and downright FUN. The album's first single but Madonna's first HIT we owe the song a lot! Released three times in the UK it seems her team were adamant that the world needed to hear and love the song and it worked because it paved the way to making Madonna a musical icon. While not the biggest of chart hits it's one of Madonna's most well-known songs and its message of universal celebration is quite expertly crafted into the 6 minutes of pop gold. It shines on the album and stands out as a totally joyous moment among her discography and while it narrowly misses the top 30 here and some low scores, it's hard for anyone to hate it surely?

Isn't holiday that song that everyone loves :o

It's cheesy I guess I must admit :P

Top 35 now so every batch is going to have huge, iconic songs included. Holiday falls a little flat for me these days, it's a shame that it's one of those Madonna songs that's ALWAYS on the radio or at clubs, there's so many better choices! But it was her first hit, and started off the biggest female artist of all time so there we have it.

I really like Nothing Really Matters, Dress You Up Living For Love (which, released by any contemporary artist would have been a hit worldwide). But Crazy For You takes me right into to the 80s, that intro. I just adore it.

Holiday was the first Madonna song that I knew I liked. I had liked Frozen for years every time I heard it in passing but because it sounded nothing like the Madonna I knew I had always assumed it was by some obscure 90s artist.

Nothing Really Matters = Yes a very likeable song and a really brilliant and inventive music video, but not one of my personal faves.

Living For Love = I was really hoping that this could sneak into the top 20, but oh well at least 'GT' still in the running. This should have been her comeback instead of that messy MDNA era, and gutted that this wasn't the hit it deserved to be. This is the best thing she's done in years in my opinion and was the perfect lead/comeback single that should have restored her popularity, but because of ageism that will never happen, such a shame, she was once a force to be reckoned with in the charts and now she's fallen by the wayside.

Crazy For You = Another that deserves to be a lot higher, an amazing perfect 80's pop ballad gem, I still love this even now and definitely ranks as one of her best.

Dress You Up = Quite possibly my fave from 'LAV', and even love that live video where she puts on such an amazing energetic performance, she looked so great and youthful in that, and despite not being a proper music video, still found it quite great.

Holiday = Another iconic classic that deserves at least top 20, such an amazing bop that kick started her career and will always hold a special place in my heart.

I'm gonna post this, I just love this live performance/music video.

Opinions on American Life and Hollywood from the batch before?

Now I enjoy Living For Love but it does not deserve top 40 over some of the classics that have fallen already. Definitely got a boost out of being so recent.
