11 weeks...the track isn't even that memorable, I don't understand how this happened, and also how the media seem to be barely mentioning it.

Are the charts really THAT irrelevant to people that an 11 week #1 is only worth mentioning by a couple of news sources (ok maybe it's not going to get many column inches today but I only saw a couple of articles mentioning it getting 10 weeks at #1 too).

Sadly the charts have been irrelevant to people for many years now. I think it all started when everything was held back and we had a new number one every week that didn't always reflect what was actually the most popular song of the week
I think it all started when everything was held back and we had a new number one every week that didn't always reflect what was actually the most popular song of the week

Honestly I am surprised that you of all people would pin the blame for the decline of the chart on its apparent failure to represent the tastes of the public and the too-rapid progress it had. The chart was extremely popular when it was at its most manipulated and often at its most rapid, because that generated excitement. It seems beyond obvious to me that the lack of excitement generated by a more representative chart is a much more likely cause of decline, because there's never been anything interesting in the chart other than the difficulty of predicting it. People got excited about the Christmas #1 last year because it was extremely difficult to predict and there was something 'at stake' - they've not gotten excited about any other week since because it's been extremely predictable as a rule and because of the release strategies currently employed, the 'stakes' in a release seem much less extreme (that essentially boils down to "acts aren't expected to do well week 1 anymore, so who gives a shit if they don't hit #1/top 5/flop?").

Stuff like losing its prominence on TV and its position as a source of new music hasn't helped the chart, but it is so wrong to say that people were been turned off by a new number one every week. The chart has ONLY ever been a topic worth discussion when new number ones, often extremely engineered, were the norm. People got excited about whether or not Kylie would beat Britney - even if you found "Will Drake get his 11th week at #1 in a row?!" exciting, you can just check Spotify on any given day and find your answer.

The only people who got sick of the constant string of new number ones were chart freaks who were annoyed at labels 'cheating' - nobody who doesn't post on either BJ or UKMIX gives a crap about stuff like pretty chart runs, the victory of 'honest' releases over major label engineering and the accuracy of the chart. The rest of the public very heavily embraced its inaccuracy and wild variance and the removal of those factors has made the chart completely void of reasons to care.

Take That just missing a return to the top 40 by 1 place  that said it is wonderful to see them climb 13 places this week and also climbing for 2 weeks.

Just as i had though Laura Mvula ended up number 21 and missing a top 20 position. Nick Jones falling from 25 to 100, i did not foresee that drop.

oh don't get me wrong Umi, I was only inferring that the charts are irrelevant now in terms of the general public's interest in it.

In terms of the charts actually reflecting popularity of music, it's more relevant than ever. It just so happens that a more accurate chart = a slower chart, which I appreciate some people find dull to watch.

The media stopped caring about the chart once people realised how badly manipulated it had become, and even though the charts aren't like that anymore people still don't care, as now records spend far too long in the chart.

I think peak interest in the chart happened when it did because songs didn't enter at #1 after multiple weeks of build-up, but also songs left the chart as quickly as they came in the majority of cases. With streaming included now, the chart will never be like that again, but at least the chart will show the public's music taste more accurately than ever before. Which is good for the industry.

With hardly any new albums out this week, Glastonbury Festival is going to give the album chart a bit of a shake up with old albums climbing back up, hoping Christine & The Queens get a new peak.
Hard to predict who will be #1 in the albums right now. Clearly it's going to be Glastonbury related - Adele seems a good shout on top of her add to Spotify (which I notice has been heavily advertised - banner on main page, first track on a New Music Playlist etc.); ELO perhaps given previous years have seen big boosts for heritage acts like Lionel and Dolly in the past; Coldplay are in a good position to return to #1 too.

The chart will become more exciting when streaming becomes the way for most people to consume music and adults (over 35 year old people) find it. We are already seeing the chart becoming more lively (no more 50 week or so old songs in top 40/75)

I do think that the ratio is a bit too streaming heavy as of now but they have probably done it 1000 to 1 so that they don't have to change it any time soon because people are moving forward from downloads to streaming

Personally I also think that charts are in an interesting state: young people dominate all the singles chart but their voice is not heard that much on album charts which constantly has the veteran acts reaching top spots.

Just noticed Gala's Freed From Desire there in the sales top 100...I guess people are being reminded of it due to Will Grigg's On Fire but still unexpected to see it back (I didn't notice it in the iTunes top 100 last week but maybe I wasn't looking hard enough).

On a separate note, I see this is Radiohead's first album to ever return to #1 and their first to manage more than a week at the top since 2001!

I always find a really mature way to enter a debate is to label those you don't agree with as freaks.

If you read the reviews on iTunes of songs that were held back you will see that actually consumers were annoyed at having to wait to buy singles - the manipulation of the chart annoyed me, but what irked me more was not being allowed to buy a song that was being actively promoted especially as it was on sale in other countries, the sole intention being just to get a high (and let's face it - meaningless) chart position.

Had OA/OS been adopted in 2011, and it was already being quite successful at the time we would have had a very healthy chart like the Australian one.

Has any other albums ever debuted at #1, fallen as low as Radiohead did and end up returning to #1 in such a short space of time?
