Say a prayer for right-wing newspapers and their readership on this day, for they will have learned that there is a difference in circumstances, and their guy broke the rules, while Starmer did not.

It's a major roadblock cleared for him, and sets him up pretty well going through the next few months as the Tories tear themselves apart.

Not going to lie, feel a twinge of disappointment that Starmer's going to face the next General Election rather than someone like Burnham (who could have been parachuted in at very short notice in the resulting by election).

We would have ended up with Wes Streeting. Bleak!

If it was current MPs I would have thought Nandy would have got the gig. But the Burnham factor would have been huge. Streeting is a better communicator than Starmer so may have done better. It's not so much idealogical rather than can they beat the Tories under a competent new leader (if they get one) I was thinking of.
The Durham Police Chiefs finger was hovering over a big red button labelled ‘Full Chaos Mode’ for a while there!

Burnham isn’t even an MP and I don’t think he wants to run yet anyway. He will probably go after Starmer, but as much as I know he is disliked by certain quarters I think people are laughing themselves if someone more “left wing” would be polling as well as this currently. As much as people give shit to Blair, a “right-wing” Labour government is way better than a Conservative government for positive policies.

:louis3:

Or alternatively, anyone who seriously wants to get rid of Tories could get behind the Labour leader as a credible potential leader of the UK and work to get him elected.

But by all means let's whinge about him and lets have the Tories for another decade, that'll show those Corbyn deniers and teach em a lesson for not voting for him.

(Note: I voted for labour at the last general election, unlike most of the country who felt more inclined to go for a known liar rather than what was on offer as an alternative)

BTW there are plenty of tickets at the Tolpuddle Festival if anyone wants to turn up and support the movement (Im guessing the economy is an actual issue this year hence the lower turnout so far, thank you Tories). My brother will be there doing his bit and giving up a family Bar B Q to do so.

Centrists sabotage us, and then DEMAND we fall in line because the other side is worse, taking our votes for granted. Sigh. Unlike the centrist sabotaging lot, we will just vote for Starmer regardless and NOT INTERNALLY SABOTAGE HIS CAMPAIGN. It's not us you should be looking at.

The Keirmentum is building!

I thought Starmer would be cleared by Durham Police. The whole issue seems to have been blown up by the Tories and Daily Mail as a distraction to the Tories problems and it’s failed miserably.
I wouldn’t say it failed alot of the average people who don’t care for the details normally know say ‘they are all as bad as each other’!

err, I'd say consistently publicly slagging your leader off and members of your own party off is not actually helping to convince people that he is a viable alternative to Toryism. Which, if you can cast your mind back to the glorious days when Saint Jezza (RIP) was elected leader and then refused to go away no matter how many times he lost elections, was what I said would happen. Nobody liked him! If you talked to ordinary people outside of the Labour Faithful it was bleeding obvious he was always going to be a loser and provide ammunition to the rags.

But by all means let him be leader for life and condemn us all to Full-on Tory forever.

PS I'M NOT A LABOUR ACTIVIST. I'm not an activist for any political party. I'm a voter entitled to an opinion and it's up to you activists to win my vote. On balance I gifted Corbyn my vote last time cos the alternative was too horrible to contemplate. It was a wasted vote in the end because the Libdems came 2nd locally, so next time I will be voting Libdem BECAUSE THE ALTERNATIVE IS TOO HORRIBLE TO CONTEMPLATE (eg more Tory Hell) and encourage everyone else to do the same. Vote tactically.

I don't get why Labour are doing a no confidence vote in the Government today. When the PM has resigned and a timetable for a new PM has been announced. What hope in hell do they have in winning and what is the point? Why not focus on the million other things they can do?

I think their philosophy is they want to show the Tory MPs up who called for Johnson to go as being hypocrites, if they vote against the motion.

That's exactly it.

Aren't we all hoping the new Tory leader reneges on a lot of their promises to win the leadership, particularly the economically mad tax cuts?

He/she will cut taxes in 2024 as an election bribe.
