Not a fan of 2 People, just seems a bit plain for my taste, and judging by its chart placement it wasn't the most popular dance track of the year either.

The

is a little more interesting, going a bit mad with filter/pitch effects later on the song (1:36 and 2:06 being good examples in the attached link) - it's ok as a pleasant bit of chillout.

2 People is a great deep house track. Remember it a bit. 2001 was great for deep house, much better deep house than late 2013 and 2014

American DJs/electronic producers trio The Ones (Paul Alexander, JoJo Americo, and Nashom Wooden) became a one-hit wonder in the UK with 'Flawless' (inspired by the 1999 film of the same name), which features instrumental samples from 'Keep On Dancing' by Gary's Gang (American 70s R&B/disco group), 'Wordy Rappinghood' by Tom Tom Club (American 80s band) and 'Romeo and Juliet' by Alec R. Costandinos and The Syncophonic Orchestra (70s disco song). As you would expect from those samples the song is a nu-disco/funky house tune.

 

Whilst the song was mostly instrumental-based a vocal "like perfection, like no other, flawless, absolutely flawless" would appear regularly throughout the song as well as a small rap in the middle by a man (presumably one of the group members) sounding smooth and sexy to match the theme of the song.

 

The Ones would attempt a follow-up in 2003 titled 'Superstar' but this would only reach #45. It would not be the last time they made the chart as producers though as in 2004 George Michael would sample 'Flawless' for his own single of the same name (subtitled 'Go To The City') which peaked at #8. The Ones however did not receive an official credit for the song meaning 'Flawless' remained their only official top 40 chart hit.

Its a good tune, also very French House too (like Daft Punk/Supermen Lovers).

True, but I was referring to the fact that 9/11 occurred in September 2001, and if Castles In The Sky had been released after 9/11, then it might not have done as well due to the title being inappropriate (I believe this did affect its airplay in the US).

 

Ohh I see, I'm not so sure radio in the UK would have reacted in the same way personally but can understand why it had an effect in the US.

'2 People' is LUSH :heart: Yet another one I discovered through Radio 1's One Hit Wonders show last year. It is gorgeous in its subtlety. There seems to only be a 2011 remix of it on Spotify though so they need to sort that out!

 

I actually discovered the George Michael reworking of 'Flawless' quite a few years before realising that it sampled The Ones! So the original felt quite empty for a while, as it was bizarre hearing it without George vocals after being so used to 'Flawless (Go To The City)'. But it eventually solidified itself in my mind as a pretty great dance song in its own right.

Flawless is great, I remember BBC Choice (early version of BBC Three) using it as their logo music for a few months. Although Linkin Park's 'In The End' did chart a place lower, which while definitely not a dance track is about as close to an early noughties classic as you can get!

2 People is rather nice but nothing outstanding. The most notable thing I find about the song is if you listen on good speakers the music kinda goes "through you" (?) dunno if anyone else felt this sensation?! :lol: it's a definite stand out track, I can't think of anything else that sounds near to it really.

 

Flawless, while not quite as good as its titles suggest, is a definitely very recognisable track as soon as those heavily layered vocals pop up. Faaar prefer it to the George Michael sample though, a nice slice of funky house :)

Sunscreem not to be confused with Sunblock of course, maybe one by the latter may appear later...there were also Sunfreakz who had an amazing funky house tune in 2007, but by then funky house was dying out so it flopped and it won't appear on the thread.

We welcome New York dance duo iio to the countdown, comprising of producer Markus Moser and singer and songwriter Nadia Ali, and their signature progressive house anthem ‘Rapture’. Originally named after the Sony Vaio laptop Ali wrote her lyrics on, but shortened to iio upon legal advice from their label. Ali and Moser met through her co-worker at the New York offices of Versace. Ali reportedly wrote the lyrics for ‘Rapture’ in 30 minutes, recounting an encounter with an Australian man in a nightclub.

 

Backed with remixes from the likes of Armin van Buuren, Deep Dish, John Creamer & Stephane K, Paul van Dyk & Riva, ‘Rapture’ stormed to #2 in November 2001 narrowly beaten by Afroman’s ‘Because I Got High’ (surviving in pole position for a third consecutive week). ‘At The End’ was the belated follow up, which reached #20 in June 2003, while the album ‘Poetica’ didn’t drop until 2005 and inevitably failed to chart. It did however spawn a string of top 20 hits in Finland (‘Smooth’ #2, ‘Runaway’ #4, ‘Kiss You’ #5 & ‘Is It Love?’ #20). iio split in 2006 with Nadia Ali going onto have a notable solo career.

The iio version of Rapture is OK, but the Avicii remix of Nadia Ali - Rapture I think is so much better, the instrumental is much more interesting and the synths soar in that one.

 

Interesting Deep Dish remixed it, the repetitive instrumental in the iio version of Rapture is a little bit similar to their repetitive instrumental in Flashdance.

What a stunner :heart: this was one of good number of tracks I had to "rediscover" in a second wave as it was one of those cast to the back of my mind in terms of recognising the song but not knowing the artist/title. Just a superb house track with a great vocal, was never a huge fan of the Nadia Ali cover with or without Avicii's input, couldn't touch the original.

Rapture is a lovely track, I agree with it being 'sweet' too, a quality I almost always love in my dance songs. I have it and the Avicii remix on pretty similar footing these days but definitely a song I come back to a lot.

 

'21 Seconds' and 'Castles In The Sky' are tracks I also love that have gone past since I last commented, we've gotten to the part of 2001 that I remember.

Any love for the follow-up single? And am I the only one who think that Nadia Ali and M.I.A. look so much alike?
