If Olly put his music openly for everyone he could enjoy TOP 3-5 presence, now due too his greeedy strategy he will be nowhere near there

Where do you you see 'smartness' here? He gambled and lost, he can not even manage even top 20 which is shameful performance by not so bad song.

Spotify is a paid service, everyone knows and there are plenty of gimmicks even if it is named 'free' so I and majority not even bother to go there

And now I have a gleee every song trying to follow Drage will be clubbered in the charts

But he *has* put his music out openly, and where is he? #30. It clearly doesn't make much of a difference, if anything it benefits an artist because if people want to hear the song, they have to buy or stream it. That's where the smartness is. Clean Bandit and Calvin Harris left their songs off YouTube way longer than Olly did too, in fact loads of songs are being kept off YouTube temporarily until the video's out. Little Mix - Hair, 5SOS - Girls Talk Boys, Tinie Tempah - Girls Like, etc. It's most certainly not greedy and it's not making Olly suffer in any kind of way. Oh and Spotify is *free* unless you subscribe. There are adverts but it is totally free...

so how many months do we reckon major lazer will spend at #1 then? :kink: :heehee:

I would say about 5 to 6 weeks, I'm pretty sure something else will drop, also Z Factor is not that far away, that might re-ignite an old track [cough] One Dance [/cough]

Not at all

Song is an advert for a people to buy CD, DVD, go to artist concert, raise popularity and awareness.

Why should people pay for advert? Are you mad? I know some people are so stupid they pay but chart singles are an advert for artist and it is in theyr interesst to have it popularised as early and widely as possible

I am flabbergasted artist find mugs who pay them for seeing their adverts

I agree that singles are there to promote albums, tours, etc. but the song needs to actually make some progress up the chart on its own first, otherwise no-one will get to hear it as radio won't play it and then the album won't sell! :P It's a strategy to help a song on streaming, that's all.

People don't pay for the adverts :P Free users on Spotify have adverts playing every 3-4 songs, that's how Spotify and artists earn money from it. Subscribers pay money (~£10 a month) to Spotify and don't get adverts. You can still use Spotify without paying though!

ELO taking advantage of an even more dead than usual week to grab a likely #1 album then, although that said that must be a sales increase for them this week? Is it just extra advertisement or is there some other reason they're increasing again? Not really familiar with their music (other than of course the classic 'Mr. Blue Sky') but I suppose that's cool for them to finally hit #1, second big selling greatest hits to get a belated #1 peak in 2016 following 'Best Of Bowie' if it does hold on. Hoping Christine And The Queens might nab it next week though!

There are plenty more great tracks on the album :D

I still claim Olly has lost due to limited reception.

If I recorded a new song I would care to spread it everywhere possible, as early as possible.

Limiting access is an own goal and backfires and he is a victim of this backfire and this is why his song is not top 3-5 but 30 which is laughable for such a catchy song.

He did put youtube song way too late, it was impossible to hear it many days and when he saw the song debuted at place 23 and next week was no better he decided ultimately to release it in yt - way too late

And I hope everyone trying this 'smart' strategy in future will not even get into charts

Christine and the Queens on course for about 10k in the Album chart, hopefully it can continue to increase Sales above last week's total of 10,360 - it's an old-fashioned chart run built on quality of the music and word-of-mouth.

Will be surprised if it makes it to the top next week (Viola Beach Album will surely get a lot of publicity to generate enough Sales to get to top) but the week after is a distinct possibility.

I hate August in the albums chart now - role on the build up to Christmas in Sept!

I agree as Sales are rock bottom and there is potential for some Albums to get to top that would struggle at other times of the year. Having said that we have all ready had 3 really low selling debuts getting to number 1 so far this year.

My hope for this August is somehow 1-2 Albums that unluckily peaked at number 2 or 3 somehow get a boost to get to the top (eg Bieber , Very Best of Prince, Sia or Christine & the Queens).

"Cold Water" will be the second song from 2016 to debut at #1

After Pillowtalk presume

Zayn the only British Artist to get a number 1 Single in 2016 as a main Artist (and Kyla as a featured Artist).

More British number 1's on the Billboard chart YTD (admittedly only 2) than the British chart

Who are the 2 out of interest?

Zayn and Adele ('Hello').

If you only count new number ones, then it's just Zayn as it is in the UK chart.

Ah, didnt realise Pillowtalk went to No1 in America too, impressive. And i assume Hello carried on from last year!

Low sales for Major Lazer/bieber given the hype.. It will be close between them and Drake given the fact that some streaming data is missing....

No it won't, Major Lazer are ahead on streams and the gap is massive. It won't be close at all. And their sales are pretty damn high for a brand new track which is OA/OS! :P

Woop! Bastille going for a new peak. Hope they can make the top 10 but their streams are lagging too much for that yet I think

Bear's Den - Red Earth & Pouring Rain looks certain to me to now miss the top 5.
