July 27, 20168 yr i believe the legal requirement for news on the radio has been revoked under the latest charter renewal~
July 28, 20168 yr I really like your idea mdh, if the chart stays as short as it is now, is it'd longer, Dan's idea is also great :D also if the chart is longer, would be good to see a top 10 rundown of the albums chart. It shouldn't be forgotten by Radio 1. And some future hits too.
July 28, 20168 yr What did they do in 2008 wasn't the chart as slow as today then? The chart show must have been awful back then if they played the top 40 in full. I liked what they did in the past by playing the whole top 40 but that was when there could be eight entries. There are very few 'dance anthems' any more that radio stations play anyway just commercial EDM like the Chainsmokers and DJ Snake and tropical house more for easy listening than actually dancing to so I wouldnt miss the Friday dance anthems show., But yes the bubbling under thing is good. How desparate things have got in terms of new musicin the chart that we are suggesting that the Radio 1 chart show potentially plays a number 100 smash. :)
July 28, 20168 yr ...radio 1 could always go back to the old pre-87 model : REVEAL the chart fairly swiftly on Friday (new entries, climbers and top few songs) then play the whole top 40 on Sunday

And 2008 got a rep for having slow charts because it was sandwiched between much faster eras. 2008 was nowhere near as slow as 2016 has been and there was decent enough rotation in the top 10. Plus the no.1 was always the biggest selling song of the week (unless you count the Duffy/Leona controversy)
July 28, 20168 yr ...radio 1 could always go back to the old pre-87 model : REVEAL the chart fairly swiftly on Friday (new entries, climbers and top few songs) then play the whole top 40 on Sunday I recall advocating this same idea over a year ago before we knew what the new format would be; only that it would be forced to move to a Friday to coincide with the new split week chart frame. The initial reveal could simply cover the highlights and the Top 3, in maybe a 45 minute slot leading into Newsbeat, like Paul Burnett/Johnnie Walker's old Tuesday lunchtime chart show. Then a more detailed coverage at the old 4-7, or 5-7, or 4-6 slot on Sunday, which needn't be solely the full Top 40 combined singles countdown; given the ongoing logjam in the chart some of the other interesting non-Top 40 aspects could be incorporated, such as the Top 5 albums, chart-toppers on sales and streaming, and the other items people have suggested on here. This would help to keep the modern minute-attention-spanned listener interested over the two or three hours. Has anyone seen any official listening figures for the R1 chart show since it switched to Friday? I can't think they're getting anything like the levels regularly achieved for Sundays, if only because of the awkwardness of the time. I guess figures are higher for that time slot perhaps, and of course people can now listen when they like on podcasts etc. But for most who still care about the weekly broadcast, I'd imagine they'd want to hear the new numbers live as soon as they're released. The Friday 'reveal' show could still match that, but those who want more detailed exploration of the chart could tune in at the far more sociable Sunday slot to properly-digest the still-only-two-days-old chart. I think listening figures for the Friday would likely remain about what they are now - perhaps a tad lower - but they'd get a significant uplift for the Sunday (surely that Cel Spellman thing isn't raking in even what the old Top 40 managed in its final months?!).
July 29, 20168 yr It was only around 1991/92 (?) that the chart show moved up to 3 hours and they could play the whole of the top 40, before that they missed some of them out or cut some short I think. I don't think they could play the whole top 40 now, it'd be practically the same show every week. Maybe the chart needs to be the focus of one hour on a Friday evening playing new entries, climbers and the number one with another hour devoted to new releases which could make it into the charts the following week* * - Ideally this would be at the DJ's discretion not the playlist panel / whoever gave the best pay-ola.

Well that's the problem at the moment with the current format, where they only play the top 25 in full regardless of how many new entries are between 40 and 26, except when it suits them (cough shameless Beyoncé promo week) I don't think going back to playing the top 40 in full is necessarily the best idea (see my earlier post) but if they're to keep in the current timeframe they should play all the new entries and climbers, and an upcoming future release that'll do well in the chart soon - and then the top ten in full.
August 1, 20168 yr I forgot they used to not play all 40 songs even as recently as 2009 when I started listening. There was so much more excitement back then with interviews and live guests every week, but there's less incentive for that in the OA/OS era when very few songs debut at their peak. I'd be happy if they skipped only the long runners between 21-40, I'm starting to get sick of the long-running songs even before they leave the top 20 now.
