Andrew's ReviewNow That's What I Call Music! 11 aka Now 11 was the first release from 1988 and featured some of the best artists of the time. Like Now 10 only 3 UK #1s were chosen out of a possible 5 (missing Tiffany - I Think We're Alone Now & Aswad - Don't Turn Around). Now 11 was a #1 success in the UK Albums Chart and remained there for 3 weeks.

Now 11 contains such eighties artists as Elton John, Wet Wet Wet, Mel & Kim, Billy Idol and Morrissey to name just a few.

Many of the chosen artists were introduced thanks to Now 11, and they included music from Belinda Carlisle, Kylie Minogue, Eddy Grant, Morrissey and Sinead O'Conner amoungst others.

It would seem that many of the songs on Now 11 are now just one hit wonders, and they included Morris Minor & The Majors, Krush, Jack 'N' Chill and Two Men A Drum Machine & A Trumpet. Others like Eddie Cochran weren't to be seen again in the main series.

I do like Now 11 I really do, and I think although only 3 #1s are in the tracklist, it has still come out on top and has some memorable hits like Kylie's debut and Elton's renowned Candle In The Wind. It would seem that many of the dance tracks at the end of the album have become very much unknown by todays standards, but playing them back, they still have some appeal to me.

Artwork Rating: 6/10 Good

A beautifully sharp cover which this time featured the Now logo posted on a sky reflected glass building. A very contrasting and bright cover from the eighties.

Disc 1 Favourite: Belinda Carlisle – Heaven Is A Place On Earth

Not really a huge fan of this song, but there wasn't a lot more on this disc which tickled my fancy, so I'm going for a pop anthem from that year.

Disc 2 Favourite: Kylie Minogue – I Should Be So Lucky

Debut single from this Neighbours actress was my choice of Disc 2 favourite, from a list of rather obscure and lost 80's hits. Nothing else really jumped out to me on this side.

Overall Rating: 2/10 Awful

For what it is, there are just too many songs that won't be remembered from this volume, and the high number of one hit wonders is staggering. It is in my opinion one of the poorest volumes.

Andrew's Best 5 (as of October 2016)

1. Belinda Carlisle – Heaven Is A Place On Earth

2. Kylie Minogue – I Should Be So Lucky

3. Krush – House Arrest

4. Jack 'N' Chill – The Jack That House Built

5. Bananarama – I Can't Help It

Andrew's Worst 5 (as of October 2016)

1. Climie Fisher – Rise To The Occasion

2. Dollar – Oh L'Amour

3. Morrissey – Suedehead

4. Joyce Sims – Come Into My Life

5. T'Pau – Valentine

Artwork: 7/10 such an improvement

Side 1 fave : Belinda Carlise - Heaven is a place on earth

Side 2 fave: Kylie Minouge - I Should be So Lucky

Overall: 6/10

Quite good!!!

Artwork Rating:

Again, decent - a bit more interesting to look at but on the surface it is just the side of a building. 6/10.

Disc 1 Favourite:

Heaven Is A Place On Earth - VERY close between this and Candle In The Wind. Appreciate the latter for its overwhelming significance but I think I'd just lean towards Heaven overall, brilliant pop song.

Disc 2 Favourite:

I Should Be So Lucky - genuinely the only song I know on this side (told ya my 80s music knowledge was appalling). Not one of her best tho IMO.

Overall Rating:

Well considering there's only 2 songs on the entire edition I ever return to, it gets a measly 3/10 from me sadly!

Apologies that I didn't take part last week, slipped my mind in amongst the craziness of BJSC preparation and Uni work!

Anyway, here we go:

Artwork Rating: 7/10 - The colour is gorgeous and I like the concept. It still feels like there's just something missing, though.

Side 1 Favourite: Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind - Funny this should come up as I heard this out while eating at Beefeater for lunch yesterday! So a huge refresher of just how amazing this track is. A bold and timeless opening that is also pretty haunting. The Pet Shop Boys are just fabulous in general really, I saw them live as the support act for Take That's Progress tour in 2011 and they really delivered.

Side 2 Favourite: Kylie Minogue - 'I Should Be So Lucky' - The standout on this disc for miles, perhaps as it's the only 'classic' to take away here for me. So endearing and joyful! Possibly the best Kylie song before her 00s revival.

Overall: 5/10 - Disc two is nothing to write home about on the whole but the first disc is a good'un and the artwork is pretty nice.

  • 2 months later...

First Now album I ever bought :D

voted Pet Shop Boys (first Single I Ever Bought)

and Jack & Chill ( a track I wasnt keen on at the time but has grown on me over the years!)

  • 1 year later...

Not a great edition sadly :( Early 1988's chart music, apart from some of the dance music seems to have been mostly pretty poor imo

Went with Pet Shop Boys – Always On My Mind for disc 1, excellent cover, dramatic sounding production like a lot of the Pet Shop Boys 80s singles!

Went with Krush - House Arrest for disc 2, i also like Jack n Chill - The Jack That House Built. Both sound big and great for their time imo.
