Andrew's ReviewNow That's What I Call Music! 14 otherwise known as Now 14 was the spring release of 1989 and compiled 32 tracks to make up the final cut.

Now 14 the first #1 Now compilation to chart in the newly formed UK Compilation Chart which is still running to this day. It is unknown how many weeks it was #1 but in time this may be discovered.

The variety of music was very clear for Now 14 containing artists such as Kim Wilde, Sam Brown, Roy Orbison, INXS and Robin Beck.

As always there were bound to be UK #1s excluded from the final tracklisting due to label right, and those were Cliff Richard – Mistletoe & Wine; Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan – Especially For You; Jason Donovan – Too Many Broken Hearts and Madonna – Like A Prayer.

At the time of Now 14, Sam Brown, Neneh Cherry, Paula Abdul and Michael Ball all made their debut on the music scene, sadly for Sam & Michael, along with Poison, Tone Loc, Robin Beck and Samantha Fox, this is all we would hear of them in the series.

It was also the first time we heard from Marc Almond, Roy Orbison, INXS, Then Jerico, Living In A Box and Adeva.

Well I think if anyone had to vote for the most dull Now cover of them all it would probably be this one for Now 14, it just doesn't seem to have any theme behind it, just darkness.

Overall, I'm not that impressed by the quality of the music chosen, although I do realise this might have been what was good at the time, it didn't seem to impress my much when I listened to it recently which is a shame. The cover is plain boring, and the compilation is overall not that great compared to other volumes of the time.

 

Artwork Rating: 2/10 Awful

If it weren't for the dreadful cover of Now 9 this would likely be the worst Now artwork ever. I mean, there's no thought to it, just a spotlight on the logo and that's it. It is so awful to even be considered an official artwork for this series.

 

Disc 1 Favourite: Sam Brown – Stop

One of two songs by the same title on this disc, Sam Brown's single (in later years covered by Jamelia) was the highlight for me on this side, a very beautiful melody.

 

Disc 2 Favourite: Inner City – Good Life

A late 80's electronic song which still has some appeal to me today. It was Inner City's biggest selling song and it's not too hard to see why.

 

Overall Rating: 4/10 Very Poor

Not very impressed with the selection available on this volume if I'm honest. Maybe there wasn't much that could have been done to change that, but overall I was definitely less impressed with this volume than the previous one.

Artwork rating: 3/10 - This is pretty bland. The worst cover since that one that was just a white square.

 

Disc 1 Favourite: INXS - 'Need You Tonight' - I discovered this through Professor Green sampling it on his breakthrough hit! The production completely makes this the standout that it is.

 

Disc 2 Favourite: Paula Abdul - 'Straight Up' - What a terribly poor disc! The only major favourite here really. I discovered this song through Jack Walton performing it on X Factor a couple of years ago, so hooray for X Factor sometimes straying from the clichés and giving me discoveries.

 

Overall Rating: 4/10 - A few gems scattered here and there but way too much stuff I just don't care about here. Bring on the 90s editions!

Artwork 6/10 - its pretty bland ill give you that but its quite simple too

Side 1 - INXS - Need You Tonight :heart: - Classic tune defo Such a fun listen :heart:

Side 1 - Inner City - Good Life - Club banger and a half

Overall - 6/10 doesnt feel like a classic NOW for me :(

Not a lot going on in this one even if I do quite like the stage lighting effect. Feeling generous so 5/10.

 

Disc 1 Favourite:

Need You Tonight - Ooh er... this is an extremely poor side, I do quite like this song though but it's not something I'd frequently revisit.

 

Disc 2 Favourite:

First Time - this is a good track, I heard the Sunblock cover first but I appreciate the original too, catchy song.

 

Overall Rating:

Considering I don't know or don't like the vast majority of songs on this edition, it's gonna have be a measly 2/10 from me!
