10 Shawn Mendes - Treat You Better - 5-1-2-1-4-4-6-11-14-14-19-24-26-32-35-36-38-37-X-33-X (19 non-consecutive weeks)

2016 was an amazing year for Shawn Mendes, as he finally broke through into the UK chart with Stitches and scored his first UK #1. More on Stitches later as it's still to come but some people had pegged Shawn has a one-hit wonder already when Stitches blew up, and this wasn't really helped by I Know What You Did Last Summer missing the top 40 just a few months later (although let's not forget his #9 hit Oh Cecilia with The Vamps in 2014). The pressure was on to deliver a killer lead single to cement himself as one of the biggest names in pop music right now, and sure enough, Treat You Better came along, and it did not disappoint.

The song premiered just a week or so after I saw Shawn live, so I was absolutely pumped for new music, and while many have said it's a Stitches rip-off, I don't really agree because I think it stands as a song in its own right. Sure, it's fairly similar in some ways, but that's just his style. It was very satisfying to see Shawn grab his third UK top 10 hit with this and see it become the monster hit it blossomed into, despite not making the top 5 at any point! In my chart however, it made it to #5 after just hours of availability, which is one of the highest debuts of its type of the year (I believe only one song managed better in that timeframe, and it's still to come). It climbed to #1 in week 2, getting a second non-consecutive week 2 weeks later with Benjamin Ingrosso's Fall In Love sandwiched between the two.

Shawn is the only artist to have two songs feature in my top 10 this year. It's quite common for at least one artist to have more than one song in my EOY top 10, although Shawn almost didn't manage it until I shifted Make Me... down a couple of spots! A quick history on artist duplicates in my EOY top 10s:

2015: Justin Bieber (Sorry, What Do You Mean?)

2014: Iggy Azalea (Fancy, Problem), Cheryl (I Don't Care, Crazy Stupid Love), The Vamps (Wild Heart, Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart), Last Night)

2013: Ulrik Munther (Heroes In Defeat (Change Your Mind), Tell the World I'm Here), Alyssa Reid (Satisfaction Guaranteed, Running Guns)

2012: Alyssa Reid (Alone Again, The Game) *

* Cheryl featured solo with Call My Name and as part of Girls Aloud with Something New also

Thanks Harry! :D Overall I must say I prefer Troye, but basing it off 2016 alone, it was definitely the year of Benjamin for me  plus Troye won my 2015 artist #1!

9 Ariana Grande - Side To Side (feat. Nicki Minaj) - 23-25-32-X-10-8-5-1-1-4-6-9-12-13-18-24-29-… (16+ non-consecutive weeks)

It's been another excellent year for Ariana Grande both in my chart and worldwide too, cementing herself as one of the biggest names in pop at the moment. My personal favourite of her 2016 songs is Side to Side, a really fun urban-pop track with added Nicki Minaj. The track was an instant highlight right from my first listen of the Dangerous Woman album, from the fantastic chorus to Nicki's top notch rap - only she could get away with a lyric like "ride dick bicycle"  I just knew it had to be a single, and sure enough, it was picked as the follow-up to Into You, and given a pretty amazing video too!

I didn't really know what to expect of Side to Side chart-wise. Dangerous Woman and Into You had been big top 20 hits, and I wasn't sure if a third single would do quite so well, but thankfully I was proved wrong when it went top 10 in just its second week top 40, an amazing result! Of course it went on to peak at #4 and is still top 40 right now, so this really has proven to be a huge hit for Ari, and her highest peaking track in over 2 years, since Bang Bang.

The same could actually be said for my chart! Side to Side became her fourth #1 single, and her first since Bang Bang too. She scored a hat-trick of #1s in 2014 with Problem, Break Free and Bang Bang, but later singles didn't manage that, although Focus, Dangerous Woman and Into You all became big top 10 hits regardless. Side to Side managed two weeks at the top before being dethroned by Trevor Dahl's When You Come Home. It's only Nicki's second #1, also after Bang Bang, meaning she's one of only four rappers to have more than one #1 in my chart (the others being Iggy Azalea, G-Eazy and Ty Dolla $ign, and even then, Iggy's the only rapper with #1 hits as the lead artist!).

For the rest of the songs, I'll be doing a little recap of all the artists' EOY histories to date, I didn't do this for Shawn Mendes in Treat You Better's post yesterday but he still has another song to come so no point in posting twice! Anyway, it goes to show what a great year Ari's had, because not only has she had more songs in my EOY than ever before, three of them weren't actually pushed as a single at any point! It's also Nicki's first EOY top 10 hit.

Loving this chart Joseph!

Will comment at the end on everything but highlights of your top 30 for me so far are:

History - feels really like a big stadium singalong track, a good way to go out I think

One Strike - so gorgeous isn't it <3 Shame their irrelevance stopped it smashing

Rockabye - SUCH a good UK #1, Clean Bandit have got to be one of the best chart acts around

Make Me - this was good, I did prefer a lot of stuff on the album quite a lot more though, but I can see why it was the lead single

Frans slaying the top 8, hope he gets as high as possible!

Rockabye & Cold Water 2 of the best #1s of last year (altho I'm getting a bit bored of the former now :/)

Treat You Better was so much better than his other 2 hits this year, I also quite liked Last Summer so shame that never really took off (altho I did tire of that one quite fast).

Side Is Side is very good too, nice to see her dabbing into more Urban sounding songs now.

Can't believe Side to Side is Nicki's first EOY top 10! It's a deserved one though. It may or may not be making an appearance later on in my chart, too!

History really is a great "farewell for now" track, it's a shame they didn't tour the album but hopefully there'll be a chance to hear it live in the future because I'm sure it would go down well!

One Strike is perfect, amazing for them to come back and make tracks worthy of standing among pop classics like Never Ever and Pure Shores!

100% agree about Clean Bandit, both Tears and Rockabye are my favourites of theirs to date actually!

Thanks Dobbo! :D 100% agree, they're the third and second highest UK #1s respectively in my EOY, meaning Stitches is the only official #1 in my top 10!

IKWYDLS never quite clicked with me as much as his other chart hits, although I do still like it! Should've gone top 40 at the very least :(

It surprised me too actually, I thought she'd have been top 10 at some point but clearly not! :o Better late than never I guess! Thanks Jupiter :D

8 Clean Bandit - Tears (feat. Louisa Johnson) - 2-1-2-3-3-8-9-9-13-18-18-25-32-39-X (14 weeks)

I've spoken very highly of Louisa Johnson in my EOY, it's natural I guess because she was my favourite the whole way through The X Factor - the only occasion in which my initial favourite has gone on to win the show! Louisa always had an amazing voice and a heap of POtential, so of course I was incredibly excited to hear what she was gonna release.

I never expected that she'd team up with Clean Bandit for her first post-X Factor release, however! Clean Bandit have been hit and miss for me in the past. Before this track, my favourite of theirs was Stronger, but I also quite liked Extraordinary and Rather Be. I really cannot stand Real Love however, and Mozart's House is simply terrible to my ears, so there's a huge spectrum of quality in their singles. I was incredibly excited when the news of Tears surfaced though. Partially because it gave Louisa a chance to redeem herself after Forever Young was a relative flop, but also because I knew it had the potential to be FANTASTIC.

Sure enough, it did not disappoint. I heard Tears when it leaked on the Thursday night, just hours before its release, and it was love at first listen. Louisa's vocals are superb, showing off exactly why she won a singing contest less than half a year earlier, but also, there's a lot of good to be said about the production. Clean Bandit did an amazing job of not only updating their sound, but making an interesting track that Louisa's vocals complement perfectly. It debuted at #2 in my chart the next day, behind Fifth Harmony's All In My Head (Flex), and overtook the week after, becoming Clean Bandit's first #1 and Louisa's second. I actually feel that its chart run doesn't really do it justice, and I think in years to come I'll be surprised that it didn't get nearer 20 weeks, if not over.

I was of course excited to see their performance together on the Britain's Got Talent final, and Louisa aced the vocals once again. Seeing it get a top 10 debut, and outpeak Forever Young in the process, was amazing and so well deserved for both acts. The song feels like a breath of fresh air, much like Clean Bandit's follow-up Rockabye too, and it just proves why they are one of the most exciting dance acts around right now. It's clear from their EOY history below just how much they've progressed in my books, while Louisa is starting her career incredibly well in my EOY with three top 30 hits and a top 10 appearance already!

Side To Side  Although it's my least favourite of the 3 singles from Dangerous Woman it is still such an amazing song. Nicki's verse is cool and the video is obviously brilliant too. Delighted to see it in your top 10 :D

7 The Vamps & Matoma - All Night - 8-1-2-3-3-2-5-… (7+ weeks)

The Vamps are one of the most successful artists in the history of my chart, and are among my favourite artists of all-time. Having said that, their second era hadn't quite lived up to expectations and whilst all three singles made #1, none of the three spent over 20 weeks in my chart, which all five singles from the debut managed. 20 weeks is a pretty rare occurrence so whilst it's not underwhelming for them to miss that mark, it's definitely a comedown from their huge first album. You can see in their EOY history below - three of 2014's top 10 songs, and a whopping 10 songs in my top 250! A testament to how huge that era was. The Wake Up era is split between 2015 and 2016 but the impact of that era, whilst pretty good, was below par.

I think what I needed from The Vamps next was a bit of a shake-up. Wake Up was sonically different to Meet The Vamps but overall, whilst a great album, it wasn't much of a progression from their almost perfect debut. When they announced that new music would arrive before the Radio 1 Teen Awards, I was undoubtedly excited. I've been more of a fangirl for The Vamps than probably any artist ever - I've seen them on every tour and met each one of them more than once (Connor 5 times, Brad and Tristan 4 times and James 3 times), so new music was always an exciting prospect. All Night was then announced - a collaboration with Norwegian DJ Matoma. This intrigued me from the get go as I'd liked a couple of Matoma songs before, and neither sounded like anything The Vamps would make.

Sure enough, All Night was the reinvention I so badly needed from The Vamps. Some may have called it trend-hopping, but it was something extremely different to anything they'd done before. Brad's vocals were pitched to sound almost childlike in the chorus, and there was a dance drop - something they'd never done before. It's not a 100% original song, it's on-trend with what's in the chart right now, but it's totally new for the boyband "genre", and it was necessary because the Wake Up era showed that those old techniques of three physicals being sold in a bundle couldn't get your song into the top 10 anymore, regardless of how good it was. So what better to do than make a surefire streaming smash?

Having said that, All Night took FOREVER to take off and I wasn't sure it ever would. I had faith that their physical bundle would boost them like it usually did, and sure enough, it achieved its peak of #24 in that way, but streaming kicked in properly about a week later and it ended up re-entering the top 40, and it's still there now - officially lasting longer in the top 40 than both Wake Up top 40 hits combined (not hard really - they had one week each). It's become a huge Spotify smash hit, and is securing their relevance for a while longer. Of course it went to #1 in my chart, meaning they maintained their 100% hit rate with singles, and is still in my top 20 several weeks after the cut-off point.

I've written way more than I expected to for this song but it really is such a gem for me, particularly when I feared The Vamps were on a bit of a downward trend. It was exciting to see it blossom into a hit, and I hope their management takes notice and can improve the release strategy of the next single! I am so excited for what 2017 will bring for The Vamps and their new sound, and I cannot wait to see them live once again in May.

Tears and All Night are both incredible tracks  I prefer Tears more slightly because well it is a massive tune but both are great and both achieved success in my chart

Tears  loved that pretty much from first listen. Will feature very highly in my rank too, very shrewd move getting Louisa on that!

I never really got into All Night, I don't mind hearing it when it comes on but it lacks the catchiness of some of their first few hits.

6 Cheat Codes & Dante Klein - Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On) - 2-1-3-3-4-7-10-11-… (8+ weeks)

So this one kinda sticks out like a sore thumb in my top 10. It's the highest dance song in my chart and above every track by artists like The Vamps, Ariana Grande, Tom Odell and other huge favourites of mine. But why? It's just a rework of Kevin Lyttle's Turn Me On, by that group who did Sex which I never liked and have made no secret of that fact. I have also mentioned before, however, that I really love a surprise in music, and this has to be the biggest surprise of the year, courtesy of Cheat Codes (aka Trevor Dahl, Matthew Russell and Kevin Ford) and Dante Klein.

I never bothered to listen to Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On) at first. I was a bit snobbish I guess after not liking their previous hit, and seeing it was a cover of a song I didn't really like in the first place (Kevin Lyttle's vocal is super irritating). I checked it out on a whim a few weeks after it entered the top 40 for the first time, and it was incredibly instant. Cheat Codes managed to completely change my opinion of their music around with just one track. Sure, doing one rework of a classic track after another may have been an uninspired move, but for me, this is by far the best of the two. I think the changes in lyrics generally work well ("Silentó on repeat" :') ) and it sounds really fresh to my ears.

So why do I like it so much? Partially it's the vocals. track like on both other Trevor takes lead vocals on this Cheat Codes top 40 hits (although I believe Kevin and Matthew do vocals on some of the other tracks - Matthew certainly does the vocals on Queen Elizabeth at least!). I thought Trevor's vocals were overly processed and a tad grating on Sex but they're much less so on Let Me Hold You, and it allows his great tone to shine through. This is what led me to discovering his song When You Come Home in fact! The production is also good I think, the breakdown is infectious and works really well with the heavy sampling of Turn Me On.

When You Come Home actually blocked this from going to #1 at first, so Trevor's older solo song blocked his new Cheat Codes track, but the two swapped a week later and this has gone on to be the bigger hit overall. Interestingly they both blocked new singles from Tom Odell (True Colours), Niall Horan (This Town) and Daniel Skye (Good As It Gets) from the top spot, despite the three of them being proven hitmakers over Cheat Codes. As for Dante Klein, I still don't really know who he is :kink: but it shows in my EOY history below just how strong this track is in its own right, because neither artist has any other song in my top 250. Cheat Codes are going to remain hit and miss for me I think, because the follow-up to this, Queen Elizabeth, isn't all that amazing to my ears, but their Robin Schulz & David Guetta collaboration Shed a Light soared to #1 in my chart and is sure to feature highly in next year's EOY. That's all fine by me, as long as the trio keep on bringing some great dance tunes, I'm content.

Ryan Lawrie - If Only

Shawn Mendes - Stitches

I just love that this went from completely written off to #6 on your EOY. Tbh I loved 'Sex' and loved the original of 'Turn Me On' but wasn't going to bother listening to this either until you kept hyping it! Total jam and definitely should've charted higher in those few weeks it was top 40.

Predicting Frans and Joel for top 2 but would PREFER Ryan and Shawn ^_^

#10 through to #7 = flawless! *.* Especially Ariana. #6 never really clicked with me, as you know, but it's nice! ;o

Fifth Harmony & Shawn Mendes are the best two in your Top 5, but I'm tentatively predicting that the other three will make up your Top 3! Can't see past Frans being your #1? :o

It's quite amazing really how one song can just totally surprise you out of nowhere! It's irresistible for me, and I really wish it could've become a bigger hit, probably hasn't even sold half of what Sex managed :( Thanks Jordan!!

5 Fifth Harmony - Work from Home (feat. Ty Dolla $ign) - 14-1-2-2-3-5-7-11-15-16-20-30-39-21-16-19-25-32-38-X-32-X (20 non-consecutive weeks)

Nudging into the top 5 and we see the highest female-led song of the year. News of new Fifth Harmony music in early 2016 had me excited but I didn't really know what to expect. I enjoyed the Reflection album, particularly the three singles, but would they be able to bring it a second time round, or would they release a total dud and fade into irrelevance?

Thankfully my question was answered with one play. Work from Home was incredibly instant and I'm glad it premiered alongside the music video, because it's probably my favourite of the year in that department. The chorus could be seen as lazy by some, I mean, it's basically the word "work" repeated numerous times, but it's so infectious and it was in my head with just that one play. Camila's adlibs near the end are my favourite part, great to sing along to, and Ty Dolla $ign's rap definitely adds to the song and breaks it up a bit. The whole thing comes together for a well-crafted urban pop track and the result is glorious.

However, even despite this, I wasn't certain of its chart success. Worth It was a big hit of course but I wasn't sure how quickly radio would take to this, especially with rumours that it was only intended as a US urban single and that another, pure pop track would soon follow (which later turned out to be That's My Girl). The song actually ended up getting a life of its own - I remember being so thrilled when it got a chart play in week 1, debuting at #23. It was in the UK top 5 just two weeks later, just cemented how huge it was going to be over the coming months. It ultimately ended up with a peak of #2, becoming their highest charting single to date.

In my own chart, it debuted at #14 on the day it was released, and climbed to #1 the week after, despite stiff competition from the newly released If I Were Sorry by Frans! He had to settle for #2 although they swapped a week later and Frans has ended up higher in my EOY. Nevertheless, it's by far their highest position in one of my EOYs to date. I'll be intrigued to see if they can even come close to this track in the future, especially without Camila who was my favourite member.
