Thanks everyone for the comments!! Sorry it's been a couple of days since the last section, I've been feeling really under the weather and not up to typing my commentary :kink: forcing myself to do it now though, I need to pick up the pace a bit!!

Kygo

Hi Joseph

omg flop KP mod though, not even top 100 :') Rise really was not all that great and I've almost forgotten how it even goes just a few months after its release. I've got faith she's going to really come back with something amazing like Roar, don't want her to do a Britney :/

IYEWTBIL has always been my highlight of James Bay's career so was delighted when it was announced as a single. He definitely works best imo at a more uptempo than his ballads. Hoping he comes back with a bang soon and another huge era is on the cards for him.

5H would be really high for me too if I had an artist countdown I think, their singles run especially has been outstanding. Both Work From Home and Flex were huge smashes on my chart and That's My Girl isn't half bad either. Loving their output at the moment and their solo ventures have been stellar so far too, would love for Bad Things to blow up in the new year

:D

Hey Josh! :D Thank you as always!!

Let's face it, it's not the only reason I'm a flop Katy mod   Really praying she's back with a bang next year!

James is really great at uptempos, I really hope he's not pigeon-holed down as a ballad singer because whilst I love his ballads, he's more versatile than that for definite. Would love a Rolling In the Deep style comeback single from him *.*

5H have been on top form this year  The perfect three singles from the campaign I think!

Nice to see Taste the Feeling and Bang My Head there, shame the former never did anything officially (and the latter did too much :kink: )

Taste the Feeling would've been a hit in a perfect world but I'm not surprised it wasn't really, it never got a commercial push :(

Avicii slaying that top 200 position *_* shame it's with one of his worst songs but whatever. I hope he comes back with a proper jam next year, I hear he's been working on album #3

I'm hoping Avicii shakes things up a bit with his next era, he's capable of great songs when he wants to be but I wasn't much of a fan of his second era :(

I had forgotten about 'Rise' tbh. Listening to it now, it still has that grand, theatrical sound that is perfect to soundtrack something like the Olympics but, away from that, it's not too memorable and I wouldn't be surprised at all for this to remain a standalone single.

'Make Me Like You' was a great return for Gwen. Not in the same league as those songs you mentioned ('What You Waiting For?' and 'Rich Girl' are tied for my favourite) but it says more about them than it does about 'Make Me Like You'. I remember Radio 1 gave it a few spins at the time and I got so excited in hope that they'd playlist it. Of course, they didn't, but I think it would have slotted in well. It's the perfect pop record with signature Gwen vocals and personality and I think Gwen is still considered somewhat cool by our generation. Definitely one of the underrated songs to pass the chart environment by and fits into the category of "would have been a hit if released by someone current".

At least you knew about it in the first place, unlike the general public :basil: :( It's a nice little song, like you say it works for the Olympics coverage kinda thing and that means it served its purpose I guess, but I won't be too upset if it's left off the album. Could make for quite a nice album closer though I guess!

Make Me Like You is just one of numerous songs on this list that would've been big hits if they were by more current artists, two big ones off the top of my head that are still to come are JoJo's F**k Apologies and Britney's Make Me too :( It's a fantastic pop track, it stands out amongst a lot of stuff in the chart right now in a positive way for sure. A definite missed opportunity!

2016: the year Joseph came out as SWAG *.* :cheer:

It's official! *.*

I'm hoping Avicii shakes things up a bit with his next era, he's capable of great songs when he wants to be but I wasn't much of a fan of his second era :(

He's got a collab with Sia which I really hope gets released as the lead, it could give him another huge hit! It's not a drastic shake-up but it's what he does best.

141 The Veronicas - In My Blood - 7-8-12-20-32-X (5 weeks)

142 The Fooo Conspiracy - My Girl - 7-13-24-37-X (4 weeks)

143 twenty one pilots - Heathens - 17-6-13-19-27-33-X (6 weeks)

144 Nathan Sykes - Give It Up (feat. G-Eazy) - 9-20-28-39-X (4 weeks)

145 Sigala - Say You Do (feat. Imani & DJ Fresh) - 9-21-23-30-39-X (5 weeks)

146 Britney Spears - Love Me Down - 20-21-28-X (3 weeks)

147 ZAYN - PILLOWTALK - 30-6-15-27-36-X (5 weeks)

148 Carrie Underwood - Church Bells - 19-9-11-18-30-X (5 weeks)

149 Alyssa Reid - Badlands (feat. Likewise) - 5-12-… (2+ weeks)

150 Lewis Watson - maybe we're home - 25-10-11-25-33-39-X (6 weeks)

The quality really begins to soar up now, with 9 out of 10 in this section being top 10 hits! The only non-top 10 hit comes from Britney Spears, with album track Love Me Down. It's Britney's first appearance in my top 250, and the two singles from Glory are still to come, alongside Do You Wanna Come Over? too. Love Me Down was my initial favourite from the album out of the songs I hadn't heard already, and it's held up incredibly well, I think it would be a great single choice going forward too!

Back to the bottom of this section and we see Lewis Watson again. maybe we're home wasn't quite as big as I thought it may end up being in my chart, despite being a solid effort, but it doesn't compare to previous lead single Stay, which was EOY #12 in 2014! It's just below Alyssa Reid's most recent single Badlands, featuring Likewise. It's not one of her very best but it's her best single in a little while, and as a result, it's her highest single this year. Also not quite living up to past glories is Carrie Underwood who, despite a #1 album and three top 10 singles this era, failed to live up to the huge Blown Away era. Nevertheless. Church Bells had a decent run, it's classic Carrie in terms of the storytelling aspect!

Many of you will know, or can at least guess, that One Direction are the biggest artist in my entire chart history, with a huge 11 #1s, and second only to Justin Bieber for most chart entries in total. They have only one song in this year's countdown due to their hiatus (History will feature much higher up), but we now have some of their solo ventures popping up. The first was ZAYN's PILLOWTALK, a UK #1, and whilst I like it, it didn't manage to reach the top spot or even close for me. Niall's This Town is still to come! From one boyband to another, The Fooo Conspiracy make their second appearance of two at #142. My Girl became known to me earlier this year while I was searching for BJSC entries, and whilst I didn't end up sending it, I still like it a lot. I'm excited for their upcoming Melodifestivalen song!

Buzzjack seems to love Sigala but most of the time I've not really been fussed by his output. However, Say You Do hit all the right spots for me, from Imani's fantastic vocals to the sample of Mariah Carey's Always Be My Baby, a total classic. Sadly it seemed to be a one off for Sigala as he followed this up with the terrible Give Me Your Love :') Nathan Sykes is also quite hit and miss with me - he's had two top 10 hits, plus a #29 hit in Famous and debut hit Kiss Me Quick didn't chart. One of his top 10s features here, thanks to G-Eazy collaboration Give It Up. It's Nathan's only appearance but G-Eazy has two more. Finally, we close off the section with two top 10s, by artists who only feature once each in my top 250. Heathens by twenty one pilots surprised me, I quite liked Stressed Out but not this much! It soared into my top 10, although unfortunately it grew old fairly quickly. The Veronicas close the section with In My Blood, their best song to date for me, and their first top 10 in my chart!

I like that very much actually! :o I hope it doesn't go the same way as his Tom Odell collabs

I like that very much actually! :o I hope it doesn't go the same way as his Tom Odell collabs

we may well still get the Tom Odell collabs (more likely just one of them) in the 3rd album, but he does apparently have enough songs to fill quite a few albums so it may get cut again

Hi again Joseph :D

Never even realised that you were a fan of Heathens at all, it is definitely the strongest of their tracks for me now and I loved it around the time when Suicide Squad was doing big business. I really enjoyed Sucker for Pain though too and I think I'm the only one round here

Sigala have definitely had some strong tracks for me but Say You Do was certainly the most infectious. It just sounded like pure joy and it was incredibly catchy too. I would love for Imani to get a solo hit too soon, I thought Don't Need No Money would have been her breakthrough but unfortunately that didn't happen :(

Wow, was really expecting to see Pillow Talk way higher on your EOY due to your 1D fangirling  It has definitely been the best solo 1D track for me yet which is so surprisingly as he has always been my least favourite member and none of his other tracks have been any good but I adore PT. It has excellent production and is very sexy/cool whilst still being catchy and not boring like the rest of his stuff.

Loving this!!

enjoying 'Say You Do' & 'Heathens' from that batch, SYD would have been bigger if it were release around June i think. Also like 'In My Blood' but I adore 'you Ruin Me so much still <3

sorry for spamming :kink: x but I'll delete the ones I haven't heard or don't like :heehee:

159 James Bay - If You Ever Want To Be In Love

162 Banks - f*** with Myself lovely song title :)

I think my favourite songs out of this section Heathens and Say You Do but all somewhat good and I like them!

Nice to see In My Blood & My Girl here!

I have to say I wasn't a fan of Say You Do, I like Sigala & DJ Fresh for their individual sounds but sadly I don't think it sounds good together :(

Hey Josh! Thanks once again :D

Heathens crept on me for sure, I didn't expect to like it as much as I did! I'm afraid that didn't extend to Sucker for Pain, I hated it just as much as I thought I would going by the artists involved

I totally agree re. Say You Do and Imani! Such a fun track and Imani is full of star quality I think :(

Sadly none of the 1D solo songs have lived up to the highs they reached as a group but Just Hold On recently has come really close, really love that one! PILLOWTALK is a good song though, I didn't like the album really but at least we got a good lead!

138 All Saints - Ratchet Behaviour - 24-23-29-34-X-40-X (5 non-consecutive weeks)

139 Meghan Trainor - Kindly Calm Me Down - 31-17-25-X (3 weeks)

140 Dua Lipa - Be the One - 5-6-17-25-40-X (5 weeks)

We kick off this section now with one of the breakthrough stars of the year - Dua Lipa. Be the One was the first song of hers I heard and it was instant love, hence it soaring into my top 5 at the tail end of 2015. It's now getting a re-release at the moment so hopefully it can finally become a hit now she's an established name! Dua still has two more songs to come. Also experiencing the first of three tracks dropping out in this section is Matoma, who appears twice more on tracks with The Vamps and Christopher, but falls out now with Becky Hill collaboration False Alarm. The track is a fantastic dose of tropical dance, with lush vocals from Becky, her best vocal performance on a dance track so far I think. Just below False Alarm at #132 is Jai Waetford, an Australian singer/actor who entered their edition of The X Factor in 2013. Living Not Dreaming sees a departure from his previous sound, moving more towards tropical pop, although the rest of his EP is a lot more darker in sound than this. Great song nonetheless and his biggest hit to date!

A couple of album tracks feature here, including a missed opportunity for Meghan Trainor. Kindly Calm Me Down SCREAMS winter smash hit and it really could've saved the era after Better flopped, but it's not been released, which is a huge shame if you ask me. Also serving up a non-single here is All Saints, with their final album track to appear. Ratchet Behaviour really divides opinion but I find it incredibly fun. Is it a hit single? Absolutely not, but in the depths of the album, it's a welcome change in tone and so irresistibly catchy. Plus the segue into Red Flag is PERFECTION.

The above two songs are two of three in this section to not make my personal chart top 10 - the final song being The 1975's The Sound, which is actually the highest non-top 10 hit that isn't by a certain Benjamin! The Sound was actually their first song to make my chart, and is still their only hit so far although I enjoy a select few songs from their recent album. It achieved good longevity nonetheless and became their biggest hit since Chocolate officially too, which is well-deserved if you ask me! Two more top 20 hits feature here, one is from P!nk and one from NEIKED. P!nk's always had a lot of success in my chart, including True Love making #1 and five top 10s since my chart began at the tail end of 2011. Just Like Fire became her sixth, getting to a respectable #7. NEIKED's Sexual has been a huge surprise hit in the chart this year, but it's not hard to see why with the fantastic vocals from Dyo (aka Ms D) and standout production.

Finally, we have a couple of Eurovision tracks in this section, the first from Lithuanian entry I've Been Waiting For This Night by Donny Montell. The song is a top notch pop track, which deservedly gave them a top 10 finish come the results. Unfortunately that good luck didn't extend to our own entry, despite it being the best song we've sent in quite a while. Poor Joe & Jake crashed out near the bottom of the leaderboard, undeserved for sure!

Recommendation

I must ask you, how do you have the motivation to do such detailed writeups as well as everything else @ midnight? I can barely bring myself to write three two line writeups :P

False Alarm being here is good to see, I remember that did quite well in the autumn. Could have been a lot bigger had it have been released and pushed around June or July, though.

The Sound was fantastic - it was great to see that surprisingly do a fair bit in the chart in such a tough climate. A Change Of Heart was a decent enough follow up too - shame She's American was ultimately poor, though. :(

A big yes at this fabulous Eurovision entry from Lithuania. I also love the official video, one of my faves of this year. :w00t:

Ukraine? Bulgaria? Who? :kink:

I can't believe how much I love Sexual now after the initial hate I had for it  Also adore Be The One, I echo the hope for it being a hit but I'm really not sure </3

I just start typing and it all floods out! Thanks for the comments mdh, False Alarm should've been a lot bigger than it was but I guess it was just good to see it go top 40! I rather like She's American tbh, although Somebody Else is my next favourite after The Sound this era.

A big yes at this fabulous Eurovision entry from Lithuania. I also love the official video, one of my faves of this year. :w00t:

Ukraine? Bulgaria? Who? :kink:

Thanks Jason! :D Glad you love Donny's song

I can't believe how much I love Sexual now after the initial hate I had for it  Also adore Be The One, I echo the hope for it being a hit but I'm really not sure </3

Oh yes I remember you not liking it at first! :o It's a huge grower, I never hated it but I've definitely began liking it more when it became a chart hit, just due to repeated listens! Be the One deserves to smash but Dua's not had any of the chart success she deserves, both Hotter Than Hell and Blow Your Mind should've been top 5 hits :drama: Thanks Liam!!

Matoma's been great, I loved False Alarm though it's only half as good as Running Out (feat Astrid S) in my opinion, I wish that had been the hit. You can also thank him for saving The Vamps careers :P

Joe and Jake deserved the Eurovision floppage if I'm honest, it was a poor entry. Saara Aalto is apparently thinking of doing Eurovish for us so hopefully she gets given a good song and saves the UK from eternal floppage :cheer:

I only know Donny Montell for Harry thirsting for him throughout the entire year tbh  his song wasn't very memorable.

Be The One was a great Dua Lipa song, though I liked the two UK chart hits even more.

7 Charlie Puth

OK so the last artist in my countdown was Fifth Harmony, and days later, Camila's left the group - let's pray this next artist has better luck in the coming week :') Charlie Puth first came to my attention at the very beginning of 2015 when I listened to Marvin Gaye, mainly because I saw Meghan Trainor's name attached and that had me intrigued. I wasn't too fussed at first, I didn't hate it but didn't love it either. I forgot about him for a while after until See You Again happened - a nice song but I didn't love it either. So if you told me back then that he'd be this high in my 2016 EOY, I'd probably have been quite surprised!

Marvin Gaye grew on me a lot in the end, peaking top 15 in my chart although it took ages to get there. One Call Away made a small impact at first but properly took off this year, with that and We Don't Talk Anymore simultaneously giving Charlie his first top 10s - the latter his first #1 in fact! Nine Track Mind, his debut album, also soared to #1, a really pleasant surprise. His career trajectory in my chart reminds me a lot of his collaboration partner Meghan Trainor actually, a slow-burning debut hit that divides opinion for most, and an album that is much better than I expected.

On the topic of the album, the first two singles aren't really representative I feel, it's a more sophisticated sound than Marvin Gaye and One Call Away might suggest. Charlie's vocals shine throughout with some really excellent tracks, most notably Dangerously which thankfully is getting the single treatment as we speak, even if it's too late now for it to be a hit. The album sounded great live too, there was minimal production, just Charlie and his piano for the most part but it worked well, it was all he needed really.

So yes, Charlie's well and truly grabbed me this year and delivered my second favourite debut album of the year, behind only Benjamin. Really excited by what's still to come from Charlie but he's already lining up an appearance in next year's EOY - his Little Mix collaboration Oops just hit the top 10 in my weekly chart!
