51 Little Mix - Hair

52 Haschak Sisters - Daddy Says No

53 Twenty One Pilots - Heathens

54 Ali Barter - Far Away

55 Fifth Harmony - That’s My Girl

56 Anne-Marie - Alarm

57 Christine & The Queens - Tilted

58 Nick Jonas ft. Tove Lo - Close

59 Hailee Steinfeld & Grey ft. Zedd - Starving

60 The Chainsmokers ft. Daya - Don’t Let Me Down

Don't Let Me Down is one of the biggest htis of the year, and rightfully so. I loved Daya from Hide Away and Sit Still, Look Pretty but this was a new level. The trap production just makes this song blow up and Daya's voice is perfect for it. More of this and less of bloody Closer please Chainsmokers....

Starving isn't quite Love Myself, but it was a first big WW hit for Hailee! And it's easy to see, as the production is bang on trend. Some of the lyrics are a little silly but it works in the context of the song's theme.

Close was a strong first single for Nick, written by pop heavyweights Julia Michaels an Justin Tranter alongside featured artist Tove Lo. The song is so sensual (and that video *.*), the two voices go perfectly together and you can hear the longing in them.

Titled was a surprise hit for Christine, all set off by an incredible Graham Norton. Normally quirky alt-pop like this would go unnoticed, maybe yielding a top 20 album, so it was so refreshing to see this smash in the charts.

Alarm was the song that really made the world take notice of the most exciting new UK singer of 2016! Anne-Marie has a unique attitude to her songs that really makes them come alive, and that's perfectly shown by this anthem of a woman scorned. This isn't the last we'll see of her in this countdown either ;)

That's My Girl made it 3 for 3 for Fifth Harmony with hits from their 2nd album, and it was to be their last single as a five piece as Camila Cabello left the group recently! The sass and attitude of BO$$ is present, alongside the pop sensibility of Sledgehammer, to craft an undeniable pop stomper that is a true highlight not just of the album, but of their career.

Far Away is the third of my BJSC entries to crop up, coming 11th in its contest. A departure from the pure pop of the likes of Mirage and Se avessi un cuore I sent this year, this is a dreamy indie-rock track who's hazy landscape builds and builds to an epic, loud climax filled with guitars.

Heathens is the first entry for my favourite band Twenty One Pilots, and also their biggest hit. It's not quite their best, but it's easy to see why it reasonated with the public and I do love it anyway. The usual self-depreciating lyrics are present, but the rap-rock structure and production is more typical of radio, a perfect example of opening up to a new audience but staying loyal to their own sound, many artists struggle with this.

Daddy Says No couldn't be further away from the previous two on this list  A novelty pop song sung by teenage and preteen sisters, this is another BJSC fave! It's just SO catchy and the dancing in the video is iconic, I've even made my friends at uni love it!!

Hair is the first entry for Little Mix, rounding off their 3rd era. I much prefer the solo version from the album, but as a single release it did give us the amazingly fun video which is a perfect fit for the fun and carefree nature of this pure pop song, packed with signature Little Mix attitude.

I didn't really like Hair at first actually (the irony x) but the single mix and video breathed life into it and I adore it now

Alarm, That's My Girl, Starving and Don't Let Me Down are all fantastic too! DLMD is by far and away the best Chainsmokers track, I don't dislike their other hits from the past year at all but they're just miles behind this.

Heathens is my favourite 21P song  I only know their recent singles but it got me from first listen, glad it managed to be their first top 10 hit!

41 Feed Me ft. Nina Nesbitt - What It Feels Like

42 Tove Lo - True Disaster

43 Zara Larsson - Ain’t My Fault

44 Louisa Johnson - So Good

45 Willa - Hey

46 Poli Genova - If Love Was A Crime

47 Danny L Harle ft. Carly Rae Jepsen - Supernatural

48 Shawn Mendes - Stitches

49 Fifth Harmony - Work From Home

50 Jackie Tech - You Can Have It All

You Can Have It All is another of my BJSC entries, and my 2nd of 3 top 10s for 2016! This song's crazy drop is its best asset, sending the song into a dancable frenzy - the melody will not leave your head!

Work From Home was a huge hit almost instantly for 5H, despite worldwide success evading them before. The trap production is bang on trend, and the melodies of the verses and chorus will worm their way into your head. This song also benefitted from being club ready, I had so many moments hearing it out *.*

Stitches is one of the best #1s of the year *.* I don't know what it is because I normally wouldn't love songs like this so much, but this is just so catchy and implores you to sing along!

Supernatural is a dance anthem, with a PC Music twist (please can this be the next big trend in the chart) and vocals with Buzzjack darling Carly Rae Jepsen. It would be lovely to see this smash, but ah well. The production is so addictive and Carly's voice is a perfect fit for a light but banging anthem like this.

If Love Was A Crime was a welcome surprise Eurovision hit for the usually very unlucky Bulgaria! After flopping in 2011 in a pop rock offering and dodgy barnet, Poli came back with a vengeance, backed by catchy Bulgarian chants that were rather open to hilarious interpretation ("OH BUY ME LUBE DAD").

Hey is yet another BJSC fave, this time from Altyr, and it narrowly missed winning to Pupok that month. From first listen I knew this was special; it put me in mind of Allie X on some kind of superpowered pop steroids.

So Good is a somewhat apt title, although that would undersell the song a tad. Tears was a fabulous debut, leaving us hungry for more from the X Factor winner. So Good was a bit left of field compared to what I expected, sonically comparative to Alessia Cara's Here. What's most brilliant is the subtelty of the song, it seems like it's about partying but the underlying meaning seems to be a lamentation of the narrator's hedonistic lifestyle, partying her life away instead of prioritising responsibilities such as work.

Ain't My Fault continued Zara's hit streak, although it's a shame that she didn't reach the top 10. Lush Life was a carefree party anthem, but Zara proved she could easily bring the attitude on this urban flavoured stomper, with her vocal delivery being compared favourably to Rihanna.

True Disaster is the song on Tove's second album that most harks back to the singer I fell in love with when I heard Habits, so it's no wonder it's my favourite. The impactful and powerful chorus sounds melancholic, but the verses are somewhat subdued to fit with the general sound of the album, and the two mix so perfectly. Why wasn't this the lead?!

Just missing on the top 40 is another BJSC song, this time the first of two from Cadelica in this countdown. What It Feels Like features Scottish singer Nina Nesbitt, who I've been missing since her brilliant debut Peroxide so this and Chewing Gum were great to hear in 2016. This is a dance banger, something you wouldn't necessarily attribute to Nina but her vocals perfectly elevate to the heights of being one of the best dance songs of the year.

Don't Let Me Down was very good, I never really tired of it from all the overplay too.

Loved You Can Have It All, very infectious! Super Natural was one of my faves from last year, absolutely brill.

From the albums list, I've only heard Chaleur Humaine and This Is Acting (I like both of those albums)

Far Away was one of my faves of yours from BJSC, very good slightly rockier entry from you! Woo for Poli making an appearance too, a fantastic pop song <3 True Disaster is realllly good too, wish it had been the lead single, but it's not Spotify-friendly enough I guess!

Love 'Waves' in its original form, but I'm not as familiar with this version - I'll have to give it a listen!

Great to see double All Saints here! The two best tracks from one of the greatest albums of 2016.

'You Don't Know Love' is my favourite Olly single to date, pretty gutted that it's one of his lowest peaking hits but it seems streaming success is alluding him a bit.

Undeserved flop of the year: Kiss It Better. :snif: I'll never understand why it didn't take off. I'm listening to it as I'm replying to you funnily enough.

Fabulous chart so far, looking forward to seeing more! *.*

Nice to see Starving here so high, that drop gets me every time  Also nice for Heathens to make an appearance.
Pretty much like all of those to some degree but my favourites being Aint My Fault, So Good, Stiches, Super Natural and Work From Home being my favourites to be honest!

Yeah I think 1944 is marred a little bit by the fact she beat Dami which I both had a bet on and wanted it to win so badly for an artist I'd loved for 3 years, but it is a very good song and diffferent!

This Waves version is brilliant, it was a great idea for him to do different versions of it with guests from different genres! I didn't think Miguel and a country artist could work so well.

Poor Olly and his BRITs tantrum </3

I hope Kiss It Better can snatch the Grammy its nominated for! It just seemed like such a hit but it never worked out :(

31 MØ - Final Song

32 Lady Gaga - Perfect Illusion

33 Saara Aalto - No Fear

34 Molly Sanden - Youniverse

35 Alan Walker - Faded

36 Lisa Ajax - My Heart Wants Me Dead

37 Twenty One Pilots - Ride

38 Iveta Mukuchyan - LoveWave

39 K3 - 10.000 Luchtballonen

40 Blackpink - Boombayah

The top 40 is kicked off by Boombayah, a song by one of two K-Pop songs in the upper end of this! Blackpink are the most exciting new K-Pop act since 2NE1, with Boombayah recalling the best of said group. Pulsing club ready beats and hip-hop sensibility means that even the likes of Fifth Harmony or Little Mix would be shaking in their boots at the musical challenge this absolute banger poses.

The best main contest BJSC winner of the year is next, coming from Dutch girl group K3 with 10.000 Luchtballonen. This Eurovision ready anthem is pure pop perfection, imbued with joy and an impossibly catchy chorus that you'll belt out even if you don't know a lick of Dutch. And those chants in the middle 8, my lord *.*

From would-be Eurovision to actual Eurovision, Armenia's entry LoveWave was a surprise package this year! Prior to the semis, it seemed like somewhat of a no-hoper, a mess of a song I couldn't take to. But it slowly grew and by the time Iveta smashed the semi performance, I was willing this to potentially win. Definitely a case of the live performance bringing a song alive, the staging and her energy were brilliant.

Ride is the second of four entries for my act ofthe year Twenty One Pilots! More breezy than the previously mentioned Heathens, this summer tinged track was totally ready for radio so it's no surprise the smooth flow of it made it another US hit for the guys. It didn't quite take off in the UK, but it's still a wonderful song.

Another Eurovision connection is next - My Heart Wants Me Dead is a Melodifestivalen finalist. This song is an atmospheric ballad, carried by brilliant vocals and varying production flourishes such as stiar instrumentation in places. Lisa only came 7th but is back with a vengeance and a strong chance in Melfest 2017!

Faded is easily one of the best dance songs of the year! The stunning and haunting beginning section fades into a colossal drop that is undeniable, it's impossible not to be pumped when you hear it. It's easy to see how it took off, a brilliant song for anything from clubbing to pre drinks to just sitting doing some work.

Another Melfest finalist, this time Molly Sanden. Youniverse is just ever so slightly inspired by Loreen's seminal Eurovision and general pop classic Euphoria, and whilst it fails to come even close, Molly's always flawless voice carries the song impeccably. Poor Molly will be the new Sanna Nielsen, so maybe we'll see her in Eurovision after a few more attempts :kink:

The final Eurovision connection in this packed section is X Factor runner-up Saara Aalto's Finnish Eurovision selection song, No Fear. As per Saara's always the bridesmaid luck, this came... 2nd. The Indian inspired uptempo would have been a brilliant fit for Eurovision, certainly moreso than the Poundland Jess Glynne that beat Saara. But anyway, this near miss meant the UK was blessed with one of the sweetest, most likable and most talented X Factor contestants of all time, so every cloud!

Perfect Illusion was the rocky comeback for pop queen Lady Gaga. It was somewhat divisive, as people were perhaps expecting or wanting a huge pop banger to slay the clubs and charts. Whilst this more raw and adrenaline fuelled rock sound was a change, it perfectly fits the power behind her voice and made for a surprisingly amazing album, so I'm all for it.

Finally for this section, we have, rather fittingly, MØ's Final Song. This managed to be her first solo hit, peaking inthe top 20 in the UK and going Gold in the process. Although it's tropical house, the song doesn't sound done to death or cliche. The dancehall elements and soaring chorus lift this high above a majority of songs inspired by the recent trend.

I thought Ride was amazing and was my favourite single of the era till Lane Boy was pushed  both incredible however

I am glad Final Song gave MØ a solo hit

Also love Gaga, Alan Walker and K3

Great to see some love for 'Perfect Illusion'! It didn't deserve the huuuge amount of stick it received on here (and everywhere else on the internet tbh, oops). It provides such a moment during a listen of 'Joanne' *.*

I completely agree! It feels like quite a natural next step for her so I think people should get over the fact it wasn't a pop banger because she wasn't going to make those forever

21 Beyonce - Freedom

22 Era Istrefi - Bonbon

23 Selena Gomez - Hands To Myself

24 Beyonce - Formation

25 Annalisa - Se avessi un cuore

26 Sam Hunt - Break Up In A Small To wn

27 Meghan Trainor - No

28 Ariana Grande ft. Nicki Minaj - Side To Side

29 Yuri x Seoyhun - Secret

30 Maren Morris - My Church

My Church kicks off this section as the 3rd highest country song! This was one of the top 10 country songs of the year in the US and it's easy to see why. R&B rhythms and an effortless flow of lyrics is combined with country sensibilities to create a perfect example of an artist who is leading country into the future. A truly exciitng song from a truly exciting artist I can't wait to hear more and more from.

Secret is the first of 3 BJSC songs in this section, and the most recent, finishing 2nd in September. This electro house banger is absolutely undeniable, something I'd kill to hear out, it explodes and crafts a masterful club ready track. Of course it is unlikely to be played in a club in England </3

Side To Side was yet another commercial success for Ariana, and it's no wonder. Perfectly melding her signature attitude with laid back reggae pop, Ariana gets a hand from Nicki Minaj, who lends one of her best raps ever to make a perfect low-key filthy song that transpires to be about a sore feeling after too much sex!!

No was a bit of a curveball from Meghan, as she mostly dabbled in doo-wop on her first album. That naturally got a bit boring, so her second era was heralded in by a glossy throwback to 00s R&B-pop such as Christina Milian. No has buckets of sass and attitude, impeccable production and it really does feel like a lost classic from the early 00s!

Break Up In A Small Town is the 2nd highest country song, and one of just four songs in the top 40 with entirely male vocals :o This is technically 2015 but I didn't get hit by it until 2016 and it was still charting as a single during 2016 so shh. This is arguably the most genre-bending country hit ever, ending 2016 as one of the top 10 country hits. The fast flow of the lyrics borrows from R&B and hip-hop heavily, and that shouldn't work with country but it really really does <3

Se avessi un cuore ends as the highest of my main BJSC entries (I prefer Mirage, one of my fave songs ever, but that was in my 2014 EOY)! Annalisa's electro-pop banger wasn't something I expected to do that well, so top 15 was brilliant and I was so proud that a song that wormed its way into my affections with its subtle verses and catchy chorus did well <3

One of the most socially important songs of 2016, Formation tackled social issues perfectly, particular those connected to race. In the bounce genre, this is far from formulaic so that only Beyonce could pull it off.

Hands To Myself was present in my 2015 EOY, but it transcends the years as it was on the cusp between the two. This sexy breathy anthem is just so Selena, with a subtle, somewhat dark start that morphs into a tribal-esque banger.

Bonbon is one of 3 BJSC entries left, and one of 2 main entries! Perfectly described as the product of Rihanna and Sia when it went viral in early 2016, Bonbon came 3rd in BJSC and won TBO. Era's Rihanna-esque attitude makes this song everything it is, and it's one of those foreign language songs where you try to nail it all despite not knowing the language whatsoever

Finishing off this section is the final entry from Beyonce! Freedom was my instant highlight, so I'm glad it was even fleetingly a single (idk what really went on, this was ofc more of an album era given the surprise release). Backed by a drum beat and influences of blue, rocks and soul, Freedom is a striking ode to personal redemption and overall strength, with Beyonce's fierce vocals and Kendrick's flawless through cutting straight through any and every social issue on Lemonade, cementing itself as a song that can explain the overarching themes on Lemonade very well.

LoveWave is such a banger. One of the best from Eurovision last year tbh
Yessss at My Church, a stunning debut single, and Break Up In A Small Town which is quite firmly my fave from Sam so far. Freedom was the instant Lemonade highlight for me too, it was probably your stanning it in the thread that convinced me to listen in the first place
