January 4, 20179 yr That is wonderful news about Adele's 21 album, 5 million is such a huge achievement. The delightful thing is, the album still has a lot more sales left to come. Althoughbeit in small numbers the album will continue to trickle sell for a long time to come and will gain further boosts when she releases new material, make guest performances etc. Yes, I think the great thing about the trickle sales means that reaching the accolade of "Best selling studio album of all time" might be achievable in a couple of years, it has much higher trickle sales than The Beatles and is <150k behind. I think realistically that is the furthest it can get as Abba and Queen are extremely consistent sellers.
January 4, 20179 yr Still an amazing achievement considering it's a studio album and not a GHs! No doubt about it. It took Queen and Abba both 20 years to sell 5m. Adele has done it in less than 6. 21 was 870 copies shy of 5m with the 30th & 31st Dec still to go. Considering it has sold 2,432 in the 5 days since then, we can say with near certainty that it passed the 5m mark before the end of the year... on the very last day of the year. January 5, 20179 yr If I was Adele or her record label I would be lining up a 10th anniversary edition of 21. Bonus tracks of unreleased songs from that era and a dvd of her singing the album live in front of a very small select audience in a very stripped back way with her talking about each song before she sings them. That would no doubt push the album up to 2nd place overall and who knows how big a seller it could be over the xmas period of 2021 (assuming cds are still around then).

January 5, 20179 yr Strange to see Starley & Jax Jones not moving despite huge climbs on iTunes in the past two days
January 5, 20179 yr Terrible single sales this week. I guess the No.1 will regularly sell under 50k now streaming's value has been halved.
January 5, 20179 yr Author I guess the No.1 will regularly sell under 50k now streaming's value has been halved. It hasn't actually been halved though has it?
January 5, 20179 yr Technically ratio has been reduced by a third... Re singles sales Ed could not have picked a better market to return to (assuming it is a Single he is releasing tomorrow). Re albums I see it has all gone a bit Pete Tong for Ball & Boe...
January 5, 20179 yr The #1 single is barely going to sell 50k, and with the new ratio, I would imagine around 48k to 49k for the week, if Ed does drop a single tomorrow anything over 50k should do it, he can't really miss, unless it tanks. Low sales all round, easy #1 for The xx in the album chart next week.
January 5, 20179 yr Low sales all round, easy #1 for The xx in the album chart next week. If I'm not mistaken The XX Album is released a week tomorrow ie the 13th, You Me At Six are releasing Album tomorrow (they got to top with previous Album in 2014).
January 5, 20179 yr Yeah You Me At Six out tomorrow, easy Number 1 for them with approx 20k sales I predict. Etit: Plus they have a week of HMV acoustic live sets and signings planned across the country next week! Edited January 5, 20179 yr by gavindeejay
January 5, 20179 yr If I'm not mistaken The XX Album is released a week tomorrow ie the 13th, You Me At Six are releasing Album tomorrow (they got to top with previous Album in 2014). Forgot to check you are right easy #1 for You Me At Six anything over 18k+ should do it, god the return of those underwhelming #1 sales.
January 5, 20179 yr Yeh You me at 6 for next week on 20-25k and XX the following on 30k or so I would guesstimate - LM wont be far behind them!
January 5, 20179 yr It hasn't actually been halved though has it? Sorry, I meant reduced by a third. With an average No.1 getting 3 to 3.5 million streams a week that brings the average No.1 sale down by 10,000 to 12,000 a week immediately (without taking into account the continued fall in paid-for sales).
January 5, 20179 yr Yeah, barring a surprise release from Ed Sheeran, should be You Me At Six for #1 next week and The xx the following week. Then there's a couple of weeks up for the taking (perhaps Mike Oldfield?) before Elbow followed by Rag'n'Bone Man.
January 5, 20179 yr I thought MGK would have entered the top 40. To be honest if the ratio never increased, he would be heading for top 40

Then there's a couple of weeks up for the taking (perhaps Mike Oldfield?) before Elbow followed by Rag'n'Bone Man. And possibility a return to #1 album for someone during the BRITs week (Adele????... if nominated), mind you Ed Sheeran will probably be still around with his album if he tends to release one tomorrow. I'm hoping Christine & The Queens will get the international newcomer/act award, bit random I know in here, but I think the album has really done well for her, in the past 12 months, I can't see anyone else getting that yet...
