BJSC113 - The Greenway Song by Peter Mylett

I discovered this song by reading my local free newspaper and thought it would be something a bit different to send to the contest. The Greenway is a cycle path which runs from Westport to Achill Sound in County Mayo along the route of the old railway line which was closed in 1937. The track was opened in 2010 and is 26 miles long. On an average summer's day,it is used by about 1000 cyclists and walkers. Since 2010,more cycle tracks have been constructed in other parts of Ireland. Peter Mylett was born in Newport,Mayo but has lived in the UK for the last 30 years.

The Greenway Song ended up being under-appreciated and finished 29th out of 30 songs in its semi-final. Beaverdonia and Cumulonimbia both gave their 12 points to Peter Mylett. Arcodesia awarded 2 points to his song and Seyetana 1 point.

BJSC114 - The Sky's The Limit by Nik Kershaw

The Sky's The Limit is from Nik Kershaw's eighth album 'Ei8ht' which came out in 2012. I have only recently been catching up with his more recent albums on Spotify so this song is quite new to me. He wrote it after a conversation with his nine year old daughter about what she wanted to do when she grew up. It features on the soundtrack to the 2016 film 'Eddie The Eagle'. At 3 minutes 26 seconds long, this is the shortest song we have sent to the main contest (if you count 'Superstar' by Ninet Tayeb as being as long as its youtube video). Nik Kershaw last appeared for New Alba in BJSC3 with 'The Riddle' meaning that he breaks the record for the longest gap between appearances set earlier this year by Jem,also representing Rolloland.

The Sky's The Limit ended up finishing last in its semi-final with just 12 points, making it the worst ever performance by a Rolloland entry. The top score of 5 points came from Singerpurear while our reliable neighbours Suedeonia gave us 4 points. Arcodesia,East Rukahavian and Quintessa all gave us 1 point. Out of those five countries, only Quintessa qualified for the final so there was much sharing of misery in the green room afterwards amongst the delegates. This is the third time we have had two DNQ's in a row. To avoid having three in a row for the first time,we are placing our faith in a young singer from Sweden.

Our semi-final vote:

BJSC115 - Moln by Menke

Menke is a singer/songwriter from Sweden. She also plays many musical instruments such as piano, banjo, cello and vibraphone. 'Moln' is her debut single from 2018. The title translates as 'Clouds'. The song is her interpretation of a poem by the Swedish poet and novelist Karin Boye. It's the first foreign language song entered by Rolloland.

Last night,it was announced in Oslol that we have qualified for the final of BJSC115,meaning that we have avoided having three consecutive DNQs (the first time that would have occurred). Menke has justified the faith we had in her to qualify and we are all behind her for Sunday's final. She recently came into the Radio Rollo studios and performed her song while playing the piano. You can see her performance here:

Espen gave their 15 points to Rolloland and Seyetana put us third in their vote. A total of 18 countries voted for us. Thanks to all of them. This is the second time a Rolloland entry has finished 19th,the other one was The Storm Before The Calm by Anathema. The two songs share our fourth highest finishing position.

BJSC116 - Feel The Benefit by 10cc

10cc were founded as a group in Stockport in 1972 but had been working together with various projects since 1964. Three of them had a no.2 hit single in 1970 under the name Hotlegs with 'Neanderthal Man'. As 10cc,they had eleven top 10 singles in the 1970s including three number 1s,'Rubber Bullets' (1973),'I'm Not In Love' (1975) and 'Dreadlock Holiday' (1978). 'Feel The Benefit' is taken from their fifth album 'Deceptive Bends',from1977,the first album released after the departure from the group of Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. It's my favourite song by 10cc and is placed at number 8 on my all time songs chart. It's also the oldest song Rolloland has entered into a song contest.

BJSC118 - Lonely Soul by UNKLE

UNKLE are making their second appearance in the BJSC,having finished 11th in the 96th contest, representing Fljotavik. 'Lonely Soul' is taken from their debut album 'Psyence Fiction',released in 1998. It features guest vocals from Richard Ashcroft. It's my seventh favourite song of all time and the fifth song I have entered into the contest from my all time top ten. So far, three of the previous four have qualified for the final.

Mostly Autumn are a prog rock group formed in York in 1995. 'Saturday Night' is from the 11th of their 13 studio albums,'Dressed In Voices',from 2014. Vocals on this song are shared by original member Bryan Josh and Olivia Sparnenn who joined the band in 2010. They got married three years later which means that they are the second married couple to represent us in the last three contests. The observant readers of this thread will notice that the song title of our entry for this contest was revealed in the stats roundup of the last contest.

BJSC120 - Der Kommissar by After The Fire

After The Fire were a British prog rock group formed in 1972. By the late 70s,they had switched to a new wave sound. Der Kommissar was recorded in 1982 but by the time it became a hit single the following year, the group had split up. The song only got to number 47 in the UK but it was a big hit in the US,reaching number 5. The original version by Falco, from 1981,was a no.1 single in Austria,France,Germany,Italy,Japan and Spain but didn't chart at all in the UK. Falco would eventually have a no.1 single here with Rock Me Amadeus in 1986. This is the first time Rolloland has entered a cover version into the main contest.
