Thanks to the three countries that gave us points: Alteria 8, Jadakissnia 5 and Republic of Adonia 1. This is the first contest in which we did not receive a maximum score in either a semi-final or a final.

BJSC102 - Careless Love by Swimming With Sharks

Swimming With Sharks are the German sisters Annette and Inga Humpe. Across Europe, they were known as Humpe & Humpe but for the UK,they were known as Swimming With Sharks as Humpe & Humpe might have been considered to be a bit rude. Swimming With Sharks was the name of their second album from which Careless Love comes. In 1988,the song reached no.24 in Germany and no.63 in the UK. Inga Humpe has already represented Singerpurear in BJSC83,finishing 33rd in the final with Riding Into Blue (Cowboy Song).

BJSC103 - Superstar by Ninet Tayeb

For our 10th contest,we have asked Ninet Tayeb to represent us again as she did in our debut as an uncredited vocalist on Steven Wilson's 'Routine' which is still our best placed song in BJSC,finishing 12th. She teamed up again with Steven in BJSC97 finishing 2nd for Terra Avium with 'Pariah'. This time, she has the stage all to herself. 'Superstar' is from her fifth album 'Paper Parachute' and was released as a single in 2016. At 3 minutes 22 seconds,it is the shortest song we have entered (the video is 2 minutes longer) and it's also the first song we have entered by a female solo singer. Ninet is from Israel. As well as singing, she has starred as herself in a TV series based on her life story which ran for four seasons. She now lives in the US with her husband and daughter.

Last night,Ninet Tayeb safely qualified for the final, giving Rolloland its first qualifier of the year. Thanks to all the countries who voted for her. Here she is performing Superstar on Rock'n'Rollo which is Rollo TV's weekly live music programme:

BJSC104 - Das Testaments Des Mabuse by Propaganda

Propaganda were part of the holy trinity (along with Frankie Goes To Hollywood and the Art Of Noise) on the ZTT record label owned by Trevor Horn and Paul Morley. Das Testaments Des Mabuse is the 12 inch mix of the Dr Mabuse single, produced by Trevor, which got to number 27 in 1984,so some of you might know the shorter version but maybe not this longer version. Propaganda are the second German group to represent Rolloland this year.

Omg tune! I was familiar with the single version 'Dr Mabuse' of course before, but this full version sounds great, an excellent mix of 80s dance and synthpop which sounds great for 1984.

Thanks,I'm glad to see you're in my semi to support it. A few of the other countries that might like it are also in semi 1 so maybe it might have a chance of qualifying.

If 'Love Spy' by Mike Mareen managed to get through to the final a while back, then this should get through hopefully!

90s v 00s Spin Off - Tell Me There's A Heaven by Chris Rea

For our second spin off appearance,we have chosen this orchestral ballad by Middlesbrough's Chris Rea from his no.1 album 'The Road To Hell'. Although the album was released at the end of 1989,the song wasn't released as a single until February 1990,reaching no.24. There doesn't appear to be an official video for it so the next task was to pick from several unofficial videos on youtube. Some of them are a difficult watch so we chose this one which features clips from movies and TV shows.

Propoganda is a well deserved qualifier, I really enjoy the song. I never thought I would get into a 10 minute song but it is really good :cheer:
Congrats Rollo *.* both of us repping the #longsongbloc this time and making it through, hooray! I really like the production of your song in particular, it's infectious. P.s. I heard 'Silver Screen Shower Scene (Thin White Duke Remix)' while I was waiting in a queue for Record Store Day at the weekend, that Rolloland impact!

And both of us repping the 20th Century as well. I'm old enough to remember your song from when it was out. Wonderful to hear that Silver Screen was being played. ;)

Das Testaments Des Mabuse by Propaganda defied all expectations by finishing 5th in the final. Cor Lupus and Holland Oats both predicted the song to finish last while it was at the bottom of Seyetana's betting market on Wednesday. This is our best placing so far in the final beating the 12th place we achieved in our debut contest with Steven Wilson's Routine. The song finished 4th in its semi-final with 102 points . 13 countries voted for it with 7 of them awarding the 12 points maximum. The 5th place finish in the final was with 231 points, just one point ahead of Cor Lupus and two ahead of Singerpurear. As both of these countries just missed out on points from us,it seems we helped our song into the top 5 without knowing it at the time. 21 countries gave us points including 8 maximum scores of 18. Five countries voted for us in a final for the first time.

BJSC105 - The Storm Before The Calm by Anathema

Anathema are back to represent Rolloland after doing so well in the 100th contest. The Storm Before The Calm is from the same 'Weather Systems' album as Untouchable. This is another epic masterpiece which I really wanted everyone to hear. I don't think it's quite as good as Untouchable but some of you might prefer it.

  • 2 weeks later...
I came very close to giving another 18 to Anathema, seems like this is an excellent album from the 20 minutes of it I have now heard :P the progression on this is wonderful, the title is very appropriate.
  • Author
Yes,the 'storm' section is so well done. It needs to be played nice and loud on good speakers. I hope you will listen to the rest of the album on Spotify some time.
Congratulations on the top 20 position Rollo! :cheer: like I said in my own national thread, it's great that Anathema got that top 20 hit in the end after falling short by just a few positions last time. It felt weird that I wasn't all over 'Untouchable (Parts 1 & 2)' (with 'just' 3 points given to it) when some of the people who have the most similar taste to me were throwing huge points at it, so it's great that I'm absolutely loving this one. It 'only' got 4 points from me in the semi actually, I guess the structure needed a bit of getting used to, but it very quickly vaulted into the podium position area from listen two onwards  Very close to an 18-point swap on this occasion :o thanks for the Shpongle love, great to have a first Rolloland 18 after 'Waves' came so close exactly a year ago!
