Has '1, 2 Step' passed it? That seemed to have a better chart run than 'Goodies' although didn't peak at number one.

It is a shame the general public lost interest in her after Love Sex Magic. Jackie was one of my top albums of 2015, with I Bet being in my top 10 singles.

Can't say I have had much exposure to Sam Fox (musically, there's plenty of other exposure out there I'm sure) outside of her big hit. Though I do enjoy 'Touch Me' for what it is - a slightly trashy but undeniably catchy slice of 80's pop.

 

Ciara strikes me as objectively more talented than her immediate obvious competition, Rihanna. I guess it's kind of a Britney/Christina tale five years later, in a different genre, with a much bigger gap in career fortunes between the more and less successful act. And I do remember Ciara being very much the big buzzed about new thing for a few months in 2005 before all the hype just seemed to disappear. Still, she's trucking on bless her, and 'Jackie' was probably her personal best for me. Solo wise, I'd go with 'I Bet' as my favourite single of hers though overall 'Lose Control' with Missy Elliott & Fatman Scoop just pips it.

I'd forgotten all about those Elvis re-issues clogging up the chart in early 2005 (and people complain about Ed!), that was a very frustrating time. Whilst I'm still pleased 'Goodies' managed to make it, I'd sacrifice it's number one status for the vastly superior 'Only U' if I could.

I have to agree the Elvis situation there was even more ridiculous than Ed's album clogging the singles chart. Singles sales being really low too and songs having ridiculously short chart runs would make 2005 a really frustrating time to follow the chart (what did CoolClarity make of it all Doctor Blind?)

Yeah, passed in February 2016. It sold 106k in 2005 whereas 'Goodies' sold 83k.

 

I feel like 'Goodies' can't be far off by now. I've always found that more memorable than '1 2 Step', which I hadn't even heard until a couple of years ago or so.

Would have been 1-24 (they dropped 2-26). The state of the top of the charts then really was dire. If only streaming had been invented then there'd have been no need for these Elvis re-issues and we'd have had songs like 'Goodies' and 'Galvanize' spending multiple weeks at number one.

all the be there gone tomorrow hits would have missed the top 40 (including quite a few top 10s) and the biggest hits would have spent much longer in the chart, well even in 2005 we were starting to see some long runners (hi James Blunt and your 28 T40 weeks with 'You're Beautiful').

Much more famous now for her outspoken views (and writing letters to Miley Cyrus) and ripping up pictures of the pope, O’Connor certainly retains one of the most distinctive voices in pop. Her rendition of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” launched briefly into the big time topping charts on both sides of the Atlantic but she proved a bit too controversial for US audiences.

Can't say I know enough about Barbara Dickinson to have an opinion on her.

 

Tiffany's only good song was "I Think We're Alone Now". Can't say I care for any of her other stuff. The best teen breakout of '88 for me is Debbie Gibson (Kylie would prove her worth later down the line) who definitely had some duds (Out of the Blue, Electric Youth) but also made Foolish Beat which is one of my favourite melodramatic teen break up anthems ever. I'm also guilty of having something of a spot for the ludicrously cheesy but fun Shake Your Love. I'm guessing she won't be making this list though.

 

Rather like Sam Fox, and I'm sure this is the only way the two could be compared, the only Sinead O'Connor song I know is the one everyone knows. And what a song it is.

 

 

I admittedly don't think I am familiar with any other Tiffany songs apart from her smash 'I Think We're Alone Now'. But that song is a total classic! :heart: The Girls Aloud version of it was decent too (well, the album version anyway!).

 

Barbara Dickson I just know as one of those women behind 'I Know Him So Well' and even then I haven't heard the original, I only know that flop Susan Boyle/Geraldine McQueen version :') :lol:

 

'Nothing Compares 2 U' is very overrated, I can appreciate the raw emotion of the video but her vocals are a tad off-putting on the song. I seem to remember 'Mandinka' being quite good when it came on a Now album before though.

Is 'Nothing Compares 2 U' near a million sales yet? I imagine it's responsible for a good 3/4 of O'Connor's total there?
