I think Shape of You would have been some kind of hit regardless, but given it's a very similar tropi-bop to loads of things that had been coming out all year, I don't think it would have felt quite as distinctive to the GP if it wasn't attached to Ed Sheeran. I don't think it would have been #1 if it were released by someone who wasn't an A lister, though still a top 5/10 hit. For example, I can't see Anne Marie having made it #1. (You can say this about many things though, M.O probably wouldn't have made 'Shout Out To My Ex' #1 either)
Nah I'd be bored if it was Sia or Rihanna too. The whole 'this forum only likes girls!!!11' thing is so overused and so boring, the only reason we complain about male artists mostly is because it's male dominated at the moment.

Well then the criticism should be aimed at the women who aren't delivering right now. Katy Perry could easily be wracking up weeks at #1 right now, given the low sales needed to get there, but her 2 songs have been met with a luke warm reaction at best, it is not like people haven't given them a chance just more they have been met with a 'meh'. The Cure is trend chasing but Gaga is in serious damage control in the UK (a country leaning album was never going to go down well here). Rihanna gave up on Anti in the UK the month after release. Beyonce has scuppered herself with her streaming only on Tidal thing.

The women can and will deliver but aren't right now, so it being male dominated isn't a surprise.

Niall Horan is releasing his second single 'Slow Hands' on Thursday. His first one shot to the top of the iTunes chart but This Town didn't do much in the U.K., so I wonder if this one will do the same.

With sales being so low, he can EASILY manage a top 10 debut officially.

'This Town' limped in at #9 though, so by the laws of diminishing returns I expect this one will have to be lucky to make the top 20 let alone top 10.
Poor Niall, though I guess it was inevitable he'd be the weakest commercially on his own. Just never really had the fanfare or buzz the others managed to court. I absolutely adored 'This Town' though so I'll be happy to get some new music from him.
"Shape Of You" would have been a massive hit for anyone B-list let alone A-list

I agree, I remember when I first heard it, I just knew it was going to be massive for months on end. It's one of those songs that catches a certain mood or sound just at the right time and had the added push of being sung by one of the most popular singers of the day. But, yeah, Ed or no Ed that song would have been huge. Though I'm not sure anyone could have sung it considering how many Relatable™ Sheeran lyrics were shoehored in.

He shifted 37.5k first week with This Town - realistically we can expect him to have Hot Hits and NMF support from the off, and providing that the top 50 playlist is updating it's very possible he'll shift 26k over the space of the week, assuming that's around the top 10 threshold.

(I see him doing 20k on iTunes over the week easily so 6k in streams should be achievable easily!)

This Town was at least a bigger hit in the States than Just Hold On was though, peaking at #20 and didn't have too bad a run, whilst Louis I think limped to about #50 and then just had weeks of freefall.

Shame really, as Just Hold On was incredible. If I remember it had a strange chart run here too, went something like 2-3-12-. Christmas majorly got in its way!

Louis effort was also propped up by his XF performance over here.

I guess Niall could get a BGT performance slot as the semis should be coming up in the next few weeks

The Town was amazing, one of Jeremy Renner's best movies.
If any of my favourite female singers made Shape of You and it was no.1 for 14 weeks I'd be pissed of that it's their crap song that achieved it rather than all their good songs. It has literally nothing to do with Ed's penis.

Shape Of You is still a tune not gonna lie...

Is this 59p? So surprised by the success this song is having!

Xmas has ruined many a promising or consistent chart run. Though I didn't have much time for 'Just Hold On' - I feel bad saying that because of why it was written, but it was just the most generic sounding EDM track.

That's all down to opinion though and the public are trash with the majority of decisions imo, so I don't really agree with that.

But yes, down with women! Burn them at the stake!

Why does the google entry for Buzzjack now say 'Buzzjack Has Issues With Shape Of You'
That's the subtitle for the current Buzzjack Reshuffle Chart thread.

Haha so anyone who decides they want to google the website Buzzjack that they had heard of will see the truth about Buzzjack's attitude to Shape Of You before they click on the link. It may discourage some Ed Sheeran fans from joining though!
