well I imagine they're going to include today's chart stars on this weekly show, rather than plucking acts out of obscurity.

I do hope something like this can get used as a platform for breaking artists/songs. There's lots of acts not deemed big enough for a guest X Factor appearance that could really use the exposure.

TOTP used to have acts below the top 20 and/or top 40 if they were up and coming acts. Hope this show does the same.
To make a success of the show, it really needs careful planning, what day of the week they should be showcasing it, and what competition it will be facing from ITV1, bearing in mind Emmerdale/ Corrie draws in numbers on a Friday evening. Otherwise shift it to the weekends.

I think Friday night is perfect for it. It's not ideal to face an ITV soap but I don't think it's as big a deal as it was for TOTP in the 90s and 00s, because it's not just about overnight ratings anymore. If it's a good show, it'll do well on catchup/iPlayer/YouTube. And sandwiched between The One Show and Eastenders isn't a bad place to be.

Friday would probably be the best spot for it, what with it being New Music Friday and kids finishing school for the weekend. I don't think it should necessarily be a problem facing competition from Emmerdale or Corrie as I suspect the intended audience will be much younger than the core audiences of those two soaps. Eastenders, I believe, gets the best percentage of younger viewers out of the main three soaps so it'll be good to have that either as a lead-in or following the music show. I'm still kinda warey at a music show of this ilk working on primetime TV in 2017 for reasons stated before by myself and others, but I do hope it can be a success. It needs a special draw like Carpool Karaoke is for The Late Late Show in America which can be a hit online too.

I don't think it necessarily needs a "special draw" - even if it were just performances of the artists a la TOTP, there's still the chances that some of them could become "viral hits", the modern equivalent of what would have been (and still are, actually) "watercooler moments" on TOTP. Even late in its run TOTP could provide them, like this messy Travis performance -

I also remember Franz Ferdinand's single shooting up the iTunes chart because

during a Comic Relief TOTP special

I don't remember seeing that

One of my favourite TOTP performances is still this

Note the reference to Amarillo long before the Peter Kay video

Didn't Tony Chrisite appear the week before performing this?

The performance of their first hit had an unusual choice of singer (obviously the vocals on the track are sampled):

Yeah Tony Christie was on the record but Jarvis wrote it

I don't like the sketches/interviews idea, they only have half an hour to play with. Weren't unnecessary features part of what killed TOTP in the first place? Still, if this goes well I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being renamed Top of the Pops and the classic formula was brought back. Also, to the people who think interest in the repeats will wane, there is zero chance of the Beeb refusing to give pop pickers and 6 Music listeners of a certain age the chance to relive TOTP coverage of baggy, rave, grunge and the Battle of Britpop.

From what I've read, the idea of the sketches is to provide content that will be popular on social media - hence the references to Carpool Karaoke, which I don't think is even on the telly in the UK but everyone seems to know about it.
Given when the 6 week experimental programme is likely to be broadcast it will fall slap bang in the middle of the big Quarter 4 album releases so I expect there will be a number of acts who would happily appear on the programme in order to promote whatever album they have just released, or are about to release.
One preformance I always remember is: Muse - Newborn. What the hech was going on there.

Been confirmed in the papers this morning that Greg James will be fronting this show. Kind of makes sense given he hosts the Chart Show on Radio 1 - brand homogeny and all that. He's a great guy anyway so I'm happy with that choice.
