He's retired from touring and is also in the middle of taking a hiatus from releasing music, though it is very much rumoured that he will release an album this year.

Why the reversal?

The Avicii sound sadly doesn't make a chart hit anymore, it doesn't help that Avicii's not released anything in ages too and I actually expect his return single will underperform.

It might do again.

 

Dance music has gotten softer and softer in recent years.

 

I'm still waiting to see what the next trend is after tropical house has fully ended.

There have been pictures of Avicii in the studio so he is definitely coming back. Apparently he has described it as his best work. I am still surprised he never released his collab with Sia last year, I am positive if he releases that he will have a big hit with it (though I've only heard a poor quality version). He is bound to work with big stars I would imagine.
