67. Persephonia - Cry For Freedom - Jay Dabhi and Moises Modesto

A first win for Persephonia as Jay Dabhi and Moises Modesto finished just two points ahead of Circles by Vanic x Machineheart (Florina). Destroy Me by Mr Kitty was 3rd for Eledan.

Another winner that I'm guessing was a bit unexpected at the time. I like the combination of drum'n'bass with a Middle Eastern sound. The piano bit in the last 20 seconds is very similar to the one at the end of 'Somewhere In Hollywood' by 10cc. I think this is the first instrumental to win the contest. Jay Dabhi is an American DJ who has a particular liking for cake while Moises Modesto is from the Dominican Republic.

68. Jamvale - In Your Arms - Michael Woods featuring Lauren Dyson

A comfortable win for Michael Woods,he finished 22 points ahead of Karen Harding representing Fljotavik with Say Something. Yelle's Completement Fou was 3rd for N DNTN.

This is a good EDM pop song. With some promotion and airplay,I would have expected it to be a top 40 hit. Michael Woods and Lauren Dyson are both British. Lauren is big in South Korea with a no.1 single and album there.

8.4 out of 10.

Karen Harding really was robbed of a win there. Even if the song hadn't become a future UK hit I reckon it would have held up better in the long run for BJSC participants. Completement Fou in the top 3 was great also.

In Your Arms itself is one of my least favourite winners that fall into the EDM umbrella, it felt a bit too generic for me to really get into.

Really loved seeing Cry For Freedom win its contest, that one is such a BJSC classic :heart: Likewise with Beautiful and RAMelia and I was also a big fan of Sissy That Walk and Tear the House Up though they're generally less well-regarded these days.

69. Altyr Muunilinst - I Loved You - Blonde featuring Melissa Steel

A landslide victory for Blonde giving Altyr Muunilinst their first win. The Years (Prologue) by The Midnight was 62 points behind in 2nd place while Tala's Alchemy was 3rd for Botanikka.

This is alright but it sounds like a lot of other deep house tracks that were around at that time. It's a cover of a song called More by Tamia from 2004 and reached no.7 on the UK chart. Blonde and Melissa Steel now have seven top 40 hits between them.

6.9 out of 10.

I've always found PC Music quite hit or miss, but I feel like my cold heart is warming to the cuteness of it more and more lately. 'Beautiful' is pretty adorable, fun and high energy of course! I like. From this edition I am also familiar with Lindsey Stirling queen of strings, the very trashy 'Armenian Girl', the gorgeous 'Bullit' that went on to become a hit in the real world and in my personal chart (one of my favourite songs of 2014 :wub:), the artist with the iconic name (if I say so myself) Jade Blue and I think I've heard the Charisma.com song on plug.

FAVOURITE WINNER ALERT. I remember Bré playing 'Cry For Freedom' on plug a couple of years ago and I instantly fell in love with it. I adore great D&B songs and this avoids being too watered down and samey like a lot of recent D&B (this was quite an old song though anyway, 2009 I think?) ~ instead absolutely captivating with the lush Middle Eastern influence. Even though it's fully instrumental, I still feel that it conveys emotion without needing any words, perhaps knowing a bit more about the background of the song helps too. Persephonia found an absolute gem here and I'm glad they unleashed it eventually. That top 3 was spectacular on the whole actually with Vanic x Machineheart and Mr Kitty too... possibly the best BJSC top 3 ever? Actually lemme extend that to top 4 because 'Sunlight' is amazing as well. Lots of love for Moya's 'Earthbound' (how did that flop so much?!) and Deorro's 'Five Hours' too, Yehesi were on a roll at the moment.

Jamvale/Mulgracia playing it safe following the excellent Moya flopping I think. 'In Your Arms' is a pretty disappointing winner to follow the stellar 'Cry For Freedom', the biggest praise I can give it is that the breakdown is pretty catchy, but on the whole it's such a generic song :( at least they'd have a much better winner later *.* love the song that finished in second place however - Karen Harding's 'Say Something' that would later become a UK hit. I miss how good dance in the chart was in 2014! The Rachel Row song is a total jam also and don't even get me started on Eagles For Hands... HOW, just, HOW did this beauty flop in last?! two amazing AQs flopping in the final in a row :(

...however, now we have a dance song that was to become a chart hit that actually did win *.* I can absolutely see why 'I Loved You' was a landslide winner and I'm a big fan of the song myself, deep house done right is fab. Melissa Steel's solo offering 'Kisses For Breakfast' was pretty bad though oops. Elsewhere, I also really like Danny L Harle's 'Broken Flowers' (was really sad this didn't crack the top 40) and Marlon Roudette and his wonderful steel drums.

One of the very rare examples of my 12 winning there. Absolutely love Cry for Freedom, might just be my favourite from Persephonia and that is saying something :wub: Was such a surprise winner at the time especially ahead of Circles (which I also loved, but I am glad didn't win) which was hugely hyped. Such a shame it didn't open the doors for more instrumental winners (I suppose one to come you could almost class as an instrumental).
Unpopular opinion but I'm still very glad Jamvale's first winner was 'In Your Arms' and not 'Shatter Me'. Either way, they gave us an even better winner the following year as Mulgracia.

Catching up with this (oops at me getting behind just as you got to my first winner :kink:)

66: 'Beautiful' is my third favourite of the Aeroche winners, and once again the huge standout in a top 5 that was otherwise very subpar (I quite liked Zeds Dead but not enough to vote for it, the other 3 were kinda shades of awful). My 12 went to Elëdan again with Taquwami's 'vvi+h You' which I think is another song that pretty much no one other than me remembers these days but it was my 3rd favourite entry of the year and one I still listen to :heart: Other long-lasting highlights are my 8 (Charisma.com's 'Iinadukeblue') and 7 (Lars Vaular's 'Rett Opp Og Ned') because weird foreign rap songs are great. x

67: So yes, my first winner *.* at the time was the longest a country had ever waited to have a first win (a record since beaten twice, by Kylienips and (South) Danaelanda). 'Cry For Freedom' is one of my favourite songs of all time, and still my favourite ever entry, so this winning was a pretty special moment :wub: it had actually been a potential to be my very first entry back in BJSC 19, wouldn't have done near as well then so it seems like I waited to send it at juuust the right time. Hooray. Had to feel a little bad for denying Florina what would have been their only winner though, 'Circles' was a highlight of that contest and it seemed to have the wider appeal, still not really sure how I managed to beat it xx My 12 though went to the song that came 3rd, which was Elëdan again (second time in a row and 3rd time in 7 contests, this era of Elëdan entries *.*) with Mr.Kitty's 'Destroy Me' which I think remains to this day my very favourite ever BJSC discovery :wub: :wub: :wub: so yes, this top 3 contains my 2 favourite ever BJSC songs quite possibly... there aren't many other songs from here I listen to much any more actually (Tielsie's 'Palette' and Lorentz' 'Allt Från Mig' completed my top 3 but not heard either for ages), shout out to my 7 pointer 'Five Hours' by Deorro though which would later be a hit single in a massively inferior version with tagged on Chris Brown vocals. Oh and one of the DNQs in this contest is more iconic than most of the final: 'Baby Doll' by Meet Bros Anjjan & Kanika Kapoor *.* Shoutbox anthem ~ plus XTC's 'Functions On The Low', which bombed in the semi-final, later became a hit of sorts as the instrumental to Stormzy's 'Shut Up', was unexpected to hear that instrumental popping up in a charting song :lol:

(this was indeed the first instrumental winner and so far the only winner without any vocals at all, though there have been a couple of winners since that are mostly instrumental with only minor vocal parts (i.e. no verses/chorus))

68: I was deeply disappointed with the results of the first contest I was a full host of, 'In Your Arms' is dreeeeadful and one of my least favourite winners (plus it sounded barely any different from all the other terrible dance songs James was sending at the time, never got why this one in particular did so much better than the rest), and I didn't care much for either of the others in the top 3 either oops! The main results I remember here are Nothing But Thieves' excellent 'Graveyard Whistling' (my 7 pointer) coming as high as 6th after no one had even predicted it to even qualify, and Fuck Buttons' 'Surf Solar' somehow being in the lead around halfway through the results (although it ended up missing the top 10). My top 3 of this contest were great though - my 12 was Erkka's 'Plastic Flamingos' :wub: just beating Grum's 'Heartbeats' which was a song I'd known for years already prior to the contest and was amazed to see suddenly being entered then. Then 8 points went to AutoLaser's 'IKNOW' which did really badly and I still don't understand why. Though it at least beat my poor brave auto-qualifier which came last by a mile. Boo.

69: 'I Loved You' was another pretty good winner but a song that I don't associate with the contest at all these days. Feels a bit cheap in retrospect lol ~ (although this was obviously before it became a hit single). Highlights of this contest were 'Wolves' by We Are All Astronauts, 'Alchemy' by TĀLĀ and 'The Space Between Us' by Widek, which were my top 3 in that order but basically all inseparable. I actually tried to send 'Alchemy' myself this contest as a last minute change of entry but I'm really glad I did get blocked there because I would have regretted breaking my unwritten rule of never recycling my own artists, even though it would have got me another big hit :P then another song that sticks out from this contest is E.S. Posthumus' 'Mosane', one of Tirren's last entries, and a very unique song *.* which was a bit of a surprise qualifier iirc ~

~~~
aside: yass at 'Cry For Freedom' now being your favourite winner Jade *.* didn't expect it to suddenly overtake Woodkid after you saying for ages that was your favourite x
Yup, it's always been extremely close between the two but I feel like I go back to 'Cry For Freedom' more and spamming it just now cemented it. :wub:
That, Woodkid and Agnes is an amazing top 3 of winners rn *.*
68 Botanikka // Emma Hewitt - Colours [bJSC 42]
69 Persephonia // Jay Dahbi & Moises Modesto - Cry For Freedom [bJSC 67]
Beautiful is definitely my fave Aeroche winner, at the time I didn't appreciate it enough to vote for it but I'msuch a PC Music whore now that I adore it <3 It's so cute and addictive, plus quickly turns into an undeniable banger, a stellar example of PC Music really. Shatter Me would've been a fab winner too and that was my 10, my 12 went to 4th placer Super Love by Dami Im, a wonderful pop song :wub: If that snuck top 3 that'd be a flawless top 3.
Cry For Freedom means that after 2 contests, Emma Hewitt isnt my least favourite winner anymore :lol: Soz Bré but I know you know my feelings :kink: I get the appeal to others so it' not a total why tf did that win moment, it's just really not for me. I don't tend to like instrumentals, I don't mind D&B if I like the vocalist, idk I just really don't like it and find it boring personally. Circles would've been a fab winner :wub: I only gave it 7 at the time but it easily outstrips my top 3 from that contest nowadays and I still go back to it a fair bit. My 12, Maria Hazell's Say It Like You Mean It, is still Tartford's best though, what a tune *.*
In Your Arms is better, good enough but I cannot fathom how it won :lol: AS has been said, it's the same sort of generic dance James and many others were sending at the time yet somehow that won out over a bloody fab dance banger from Karen Harding. That really should have been my 12, it would be if we did the contest now, but it was a fair bit behind so an extra 7 wouldn't have made it win :P My own entry that month is one of my faves of mine, and one I was so shocked to see come top 5 :wub: It has a bit of D&B in, Cry For Freedom impakt x I'd love to find something like that to send again, been on the lookout since!
I Loved You is a FAR better dance winner than In Your Arms,it nails the formula so it's the right sid of generic :lol: Melissa's vocals are lushhh and it's just an all round banger. I think I gave it 7 or 8 but it would be 12 now!
70. Republic of Adonia - Open Season - Josef Salvat
A future no.1 single,Are You With Me by Lost Frequencies,was entered but it could only finish in 13th place. Instead,Aussie Josef Salvat was the winner,finishing 15 points ahead of All The Evil Of This World by Henry Saiz (Aeroche). Special by Billion featuring Maxine Ashley was 3rd for #00274E.
After a promising start,Open Season petered out a bit and only the witty video prevented me from becoming bored of it. It was a top 10 hit in Belgium and France.
6.5 out of 10.
:o
Open Season is great (even though I don't think I realised it at the time) - it's like the best a-ha single that never was.
Was never really that big on 'Open Season' and it doesn't sound much like a BJSC hit to my ears either, a bit of a weird winner for me. Once again Aeroche really should have taken this one, seems like a lot of their best entries are the ones that came 2nd - 'All The Evil Of This World' is actually one I didn't particularly like on first listen somehow but it grew on me so much so quickly that it ended up getting my 12! :heart: This is another contest which doesn't really have many songs that I go back to very often, though it did feature a brilliant surprise top 10 hit in Daniel Avery's 'Drone Logic' which I gave 10 points. My own entry (Fura's 'Demons'), I convinced myself at the time it was one of my favourite songs I'd ever sent, and while I still love it a lot it hasn't at all held up to how much it hit me the first few listens, I totally get why it flopped in retrospect... and had I not sent it it might have later been a bigger hit in the form of the remix 'Demons II' by Notize which is much more BJSC-friendly (I think Lew said he would have sent that at some point if I hadn't already sent the original).
Also, one more time, the next song is a little hard to find on the Internet due to it getting removed everywhere but it's still available here!
i absolutely would've bre. either that or the Kant remix of it :wub:
i still to this day don't understand how open season won, it's probably the only winner for all contests i've been in i don't 'get' - i got the charm and everything in all of the others
i hate to say it (cos who wants to deny others of a win) but i 100% should've won that contest
Open Season is incredible, possibly my favourite winner in a contest I was a part of :wub:
My revised league table:
1. RAMelia (Tribute to Amelia) - RAM & Susana 10.5
2. Run Boy Run - Woodkid 10.2
3. All My Life - Chart Music 9.9
4. Someone Like You (Live) - Adele 9.7
5. The Girl And The Robot - Royksopp 9.6
6. Sadness Is A Blessing - Lykke Li 9.55
7. Halcyon - Delphic 9.5
8. Bring It Back - Marcel Woods 9.45
9. Not A Love Song - Uh Huh Her 9.4
10. Hyperventilating - Ronya 9.35
Just one change as RAMelia goes to the top of the list and Moan by Trentemoller drops out.
Agree with Bre and Lewis on Open Season unfortunately, it's not terrible but I just cannot see how it won. Like Lewis said, even most of th ones I dislike I can see how they won (this isn't the only exception). I again wasn't in this contest as I took a break but I listened to the songs, my 12 this time probably would have been FSR Rontvia with Shut Up and Dance, loved that almost instantly <3
71. Altyr Muunilinst - People - ||||| featuring Adele Kosman
We're into 2015 now and it was a 2nd win in three contests for Altyr Muunilinst as ||||| finished 50 points ahead of their nearest challengers Listenbee representing Ramrynia with Save Me. Little By Little by Ulf Nilsson was 3rd for FSR Rontvia.
I wasn't sure where this was going with the chipmunk sounds at the start but it settled down to become a fine,well produced electropop song. This is another winner to come from Sweden.
8.9 out of 10.
I think that's the last of the BJSC winners that were removed from most streaming websites
I said this before somewhere but I get how "People" won, it just doesn't have anything on "Weekends". That may be my bias though.
