87. Cor Lupus - Higher - The Naked And Famous

 

 

Future top 5 hit 'Sexual' by Neiked could only finish in 13th place. Instead,The Naked And Famous won with a huge margin of 71 points over Mai Lan's Technique for FKA FKA FKA n. Money by That Poppy was 3rd for Hendinia.

 

It's good to see another synth pop winner. I like the production and the anthemic chorus. This is what Hurts would sound like if they had a female singer. The Naked And Famous are from New Zealand and are named after a song by The Presidents Of The United States Of America.

I remember this being a make or break entry for me because I had come off three DNQ's in the span of six contests and I thought I had to qualify this time or I was done for. Never realized it would have been a winning contender until odds came out. The rest of the top 4 would have also made amazing winners!

I LITERALLY nearly sent this the very same contest, but opted for my Indian bop as I thought both had a chance of winning, but the Indian bop had more :lol: Well, maybe for another country, but not mine.

:wub: :wub: so many amazing discoveries. Plus memories attached too, it's interesting to observe the time that passed between these contests - my debut was during my last few months of sixth form and 87 was during my holiday to Portugal after recently completing first year of Uni!

83. Yehesi - 10,000 Luchtballonnen - K3

I'm surprised 'This Girl' by Kungs vs Cookin' On 3 Burners could only finish 7th. Instead,you preferred K3 who finished 38 points ahead of Mendoza representing Cadelicia with Love Druggie (Addict). Feel by Mahmut Orhan was 3rd for Dobago.

 

10,000 Luchtballonnen is a light,happy song. A bit cheesy,but I don't mind a bit of cheese now and again. According to their wiki page,their music is aimed at pre-adolescent children. They are named K3 after their original members Karen,Kristel and Kathleen. There was a complete clear out of members in 2015,presumably because they were getting on a bit so the line-up that won BJSC is a new one.

88. N DNTN - Shhh - Raye

 

 

Avicii,Brian Eno and The Average White Band were all entered into this contest along with previous winner Agnes Obel. It was Raye who came out on top,finishing 51 points ahead of Yuri and Seohyun representing #00274E with Secret. Scope by MssingNo was 3rd for Jadakissnia.

 

I found Shhh very interesting to listen to. It doesn't stand still for a second and she's managed to pack so many different sounds into under four minutes of music. For it's originality,this deserves a place in my top 10.

Shhh is from her EP 'Second'. Raye has featured on two top 20 hits or three if you include the Artists for Grenfell no.1.

Scope by MssingNo was 3rd for Jadakissnia.

That first mention here *.* I got a spinoff win on my first try but had to wait about a year and a half for a first main contest top 3 haha. 'Scope' absolutely smashed the semi - it got 165 points which is the highest semi tally ever for a song that hasn't won! Can't begrudge N DNTN beating me though as 'Shhh' did get 11 points from me, one of the strongest winners of last year. :heart: A 152wild (N DNTN x #00274E) x Brade (Jadakissnia x Persephonia) hosted contest was planned to happen next contest following Chris, Jake and me being the top 3 but didn't quite happen. The Brade host still went ahead though! Speaking of Persephonia, they got my 18 this contest with the brilliant witch trap instrumental 'Thelema' by Øfdream :wub: I cannae at that doing so badly in the final </3 Trifoski then got my 15 with La Femme's 'Sphynx' and Tinnmark 13 with Wardruna's 'Odal'. What a fantastic top 3 <3 <3

Useless facts: the entire top 3 had one-word titles starting with S, and in fact there were SIX songs with one-word titles starting with S in this contest and they all made the top 20! (Shhh, Secret, Scope, Sphynx, Still and Stars)

 

'Shhh' made for a nice winner but I still very much prefer Raye's first BJSC entry, 'Bet U Wish' sent by Jukianie.

89. #00274E - Relax - Crystal Waters

 

 

A third win for #00274E as Crystal Waters finished 11 points ahead of Dance The Way I Feel by Ou Est Le Swimming Pool (Medhelnia). Sophie Beem's Skyline was 3rd for Aeroche.

 

There have been a couple of winning songs that were four or five years old but this is the first truly retro winner. It got to no.37 in 1995. It has that familiar 90s house sound to it but I don't really like the song. Crystal Waters continues to have success. She has had no.1s on the US dance chart in 2015,16 and 17.

Ooh the contest I hosted with assistance from Bray during the semis *.* I was absolutely flabbergasted when I was adding up the results as the winner changed so many times throughout. 'Relax' was quite the shock winner! I gave the song a few points so I did approve of it winning, though. My 18 this time went to Terra Avium with the haunting 'Better Life' by Kids Of The Apocalypse, then 15 went to Bøtanikkä with HUGE ethnic bop 'Stanga' by Sagi Abitbul and Guy Haliva, then my 13 went to Cumulonimbia's motivational anthem 'Change Your Life (You Can Do It)' by Dan Deacon. *.*

Ah yes this contest where I was leading for a good chunk of the first half of the reveal before ultimately "plummeting" to 8th! (This after a pretty average Semi showing tbf so still a good result).

 

That was a really fun contest though especially with the compilations & the fact the results were so tense to follow - an unexpected winner by all accounts too but a very good one at that :cheer:

The semi 1 recap is still out there too but the semi 2 one is blocked in hundreds of countries just for having the Kero Kero Bonito clip in it :lol: (which is weird as the final one has it too, okay then x)

90. Aeroche - Fate - Fraunhofer Diffraction

 

 

A seventh win for Aeroche putting them ahead of Mdice and just one win behind FSR Rontvia. It was a close finish with Fraunhofer Diffraction finishing just 8 points ahead of Haelos representing Jadakissnia with 'Earth Not Above'. Gregory's Theme by Basto was just a point further behind for South Danaelanda.

 

This is a great atmospheric piece of witch house with some Pinky & Perky style speeded up vocals included. It's another unexpected winner. Fraunhofer Diffraction is the project of Russian Stanislav Martensitov. He is the first Russian act to win since tATu.

91. Ultraviolenceland - Monopoly - EasyFun featuring Noonie Bao

 

 

EasyFun stormed to victory with a lead of 113 points over PreGomesh by Sirusho (Ramrynia). Good Morning by Grouplove was 3rd for Mulgracia.

 

I have often seen some of you refer to PC Music and not known what it was. Music that comes out of your PC? No. Politically correct music? Unlikely. Now I know it is a record label and art collective run by A G Cook who won BJSC66. EasyFun are one of the acts on this label. I liked parts of Monopoly but found some of it to be irritating. Noonie Bao comes from Sweden and has written songs for many well known acts. Her real name is Jonnali Parmenius.

 

6.8 out of 10.

 

It was a close finish with Fraunhofer Diffraction finishing just 8 points ahead of Haelos representing Jadakissnia with 'Earth Not Above'.

This is of course my main contest peak to date! Still not quite found an elusive BJSC winner but came so close with 'Earth Not Above'. I happened to stumble across a soundbed of it on an episode of Catfish and fell in love, one of my best entries for sure. <3 Not complaining about narrowly missing out on the win when Aeroche were my 15 pointer! *.* (18 was Skall with 'Bye Bye Mi Amor' by David Lyme and Terra Avium were my 13 with 'Time (Inception)' by Kitchen. I think Terra Avium would actually be my 18 now, that is definitely the one I return to the most from that top 3.)

 

'Monopoly' didn't quite make my final votes but it got a couple of points in the semi. A decent start to the 2017 winners! I sadly didn't quite get a first ever AQ but sent 'Headless' by Tearist in case I did, thinking it was a risky choice... it came 12th which is my second best result of the year so far, ha.
