I quite like 'Black Butta' as a song but she pushes it too hard vocally in places which prevents it from being in my top 3 so far. I am partial to soul music so it's more of my kinda thing than the two songs below it though. Live performance entries appear to have been a lot more common back in the early days of BJSC, it felt like a bit of a novelty when the live version of LP - 'Lost On You' was recently entered (but I got over that novelty factor eventually and appreciated it as a lovely piece of music )! I agree with you that Jem - 'They' would've been a great winner *.* such a hauntingly brilliant song.

Not at all fussed on 'Black Butta', it's not at all my type of music and it's something that wouldn't come close to winning now. Similar story with 'Gomenasai' but I suppose they're not as awful as Katharine McPee.

Aww, I disagree! Black Butta is a highlight of the first 10 winners and I normally LOATHE soul music like that (as I do the rest of Beverley Knight's material), I don't know why. I can really feel the vibe on this one. Very nice refreshing different thing for the winners list to have.

Black Butta was such a fab winner!!! Absolutely brilliant track sung so well. Bre is right on what performance it actually was that was used.

Gotta stress that I entered the demo of The Fear (I Don't Know) like 7-8 months before it became a single so it was relatively inspired at that point by early BJSC standards

7. Mdice - I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry

With 41 countries entering, two semi-finals were held for the first time. A female dominated final included songs by Rachel Stevens,Kylie Minogue and Atomic Kitten. Mdice became the first country to win two contests with Katy Perry winning by a landslide of 45 points ahead of Lady Gaga's 'Just Dance' for M.K.L. and Mine All Mine by Maria Haukaas Storeng and Mira Craig (FSR Rontvia).

I like a lot of Katy Perry's pop songs but not this one. The chorus is catchy but her vocals sound a bit strained. It's a good call by Mdice as this is two months before her debut single first charted in the UK. It was climbing the US Top 100 at this stage.

6.6 out of 10

I quite liked 'I Kissed A Girl' at the time (my taste was far more pop leaning when I was 11) but it's aged rather badly, she has much better songs in her repertoire. I thought Katy was going to be a one-hit wonder with this  (so did a fair amount of Buzzjack apparently, according to its thread!)

Gaga would have been a better winner for me but once again, 'Just Dance' is far from her best too. 'I Kissed A Girl' ranks in the middle anyway... need the winners to improve soon :P

05. Quotosibb // Beverley Knight - Black Butta [bJSC 6]

06. Bhangra // Dixie Chicks - Not Ready To Make Nice [bJSC 3]

07. Bokia // Katharine McPhee - Dangerous [bJSC 2]

'I Kissed A Girl' is absolutely horrendoussss (not that 'Just Dance' is much better lol). Generally quite like Katy Perry but her UK #1 hits bar 'Roar' are basically all of her worst songs for me

Contrary to the rest of you I still quite like IKAG. It's not aged the best, nor is it one of Katy's absolute best, but it's a fun pop song. 'Just Dance' should've won though.

At this point it becomes my favourite BJSC winner but there are many better to come.

02. Bhangra // Dixie Chicks - Not Ready To Make Nice [bJSC 3]

04. FSR Rontvia // Sara Bareilles - Love Song [bJSC 4]

06. Quotosibb // Beverley Knight - Black Butta [bJSC 6]

07. Bokia // Katharine McPhee - Dangerous [bJSC 2]

Horrific winner, imo that top 2 makes the contest look dull and uninspired in retrospect, even though Just Dance was months from becoming a hit, still... I'd have taken either Mine All Mine or Can't Let Go as good winners.

Yeah Mine All Mine and Can't Let Go right behind it would have been better winners in hindsight. But this is why the veto exists.

I do enjoy IKAG still very much and Just Dance was a great entry.

Not been keeping up but I'll try from now, my ranking would be:

01 FSR Rontvia // Sara Bareilles - Love Song [bJSC 4]

02 Bhangra // Dixie Chicks - Not Ready To Make Nice [bJSC 3]

03 Mdiče // Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl [bJSC 7]

04 Elëdan [π] // t.A.T.u. - Gomenasai [bJSC 5]

05 Mdiče // Britney Spears - And Then We Kiss (Junkie XL Remix) [bJSC 1]

06 Bokia // Katharine McPhee - Dangerous [bJSC 2]

07 Quotosibb // Beverley Knight - Black Butta [bJSC 6]

Love Song is an all time fave for me, one of those songs that never gets old and it's just so simple and cute <3

Not Ready To Make Nice is a stunning song, another all time fave. So fitting for their careers lyrically, and a real pop money shot, I wish it could have been a hit WW.

I Kissed A Girl is still a total bop but I agree she's bettered it many times since and has so many pop classics whereas this is a sort of nice gimmicky bop but nothing amazing.

Gomenasai, And Then We Kiss and Dangerous are all nice songs, quite good but not near the artists' best songs.

Black Butta is not for me and seems really odd as a BJSC winner

8. Nonsuch - Guess Who Batman by Lily Allen

I am quite surprised that the best song that Abba ever recorded,The Day Before You Came, finished in last place in its semi-final. Lily Allen won a close final, finishing just a point in front of The World Should Revolve Around Me by Little Jackie (United States Of Jack) with Paris Is Burning by Ladyhawke (Angelicland) a further six points behind in 3rd place.

Lily Allen is never afraid to put her opinion across and this song is about George Bush so she has something in common with the Dixie Chicks. When the track was put on her 2009 album, the title was changed to f*** You. In contrast to the lyrics, the arrangement is light and quirky with the piano sampled from the theme tune to Neighbours. It's alright,I'll give it a 7.

Really should have gotten in ahead of TIP with this one. It's such a wonderful track and still one that flits on and off my playlists all these years later. I don't think I'll ever tire of singing along to this one.

I never made the connection that 2 of the first 8 winners were related to George W. Bush

'Fuck You' is a great song, though 'The Fear' is the better of the two early Lily Allen demo entries from the early contests.

I can often be put off by choruses that rely on expletives if they come off gratuitous, but this song works. Lily does seem to pull off diss tracks well ~ lmao at that song called 'Cheryl Tweedy' that she had too. I would have preferred Little Jackie to have won however, that chicken nugget line alone is iconic.

06. Quotosibb // Beverley Knight - Black Butta [bJSC 6]

07. Bhangra // Dixie Chicks - Not Ready To Make Nice [bJSC 3]

08. Bokia // Katharine McPhee - Dangerous [bJSC 2]

08 Quotosibb // Beverley Knight - Black Butta [bJSC 6]

Tune, it's just so her and one of those songs only Lily could really get with. On the surface it's cutesy and poppy with more of punch packed when you look properly at the lyrics.

I learned a few weeks ago that Gomenasai formed the basis for a major hit in Germany in 2006, so at least it had commercial relevance somewhere.

I still think the original is a beautiful song.

Dangerous is underwhelming but I really like the other seven early winners.

9. Kingdom Of Shadow - Will You Remember Me Tomorrow by Margaret Berger

The contest was by now very popular with a record 44 countries entering. Margaret Berger won by 27 points ahead of the more well known Pink representing Simondly with So What and Cyndi Lauper with Into The Nightlife (Nonsuch).

I liked the sound of the first verse of Margaret Berger's song and was expecting it to lead to a soaring synth pop chorus but what I got was a rather irritating cheesy europop chorus. I was a little disappointed but still quite like the song as a whole. Lyrically,it's a 21st century version of the Shirelles' 60s classic Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. Margaret Berger finished runner up in Norwegian Idol and also represented Norway in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing 4th.

7.3 out of 10.

"irritating cheesy europop chorus" - permabanned tbh. What utter blasphemy.

WYRMT is still such an incredible 11/10 moment of a song. Such an important milestone in the contest too with something completely unknown coming out to beat Pink's smashing new track. Really set the tone for what the contest was to become.
