Posted October 2, 20177 yr So, in 2008 we were given the musical births of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry as we know and love today. In 1998, Britney Spears was born into the pop world. I think we're due another "Pop Princess" awakening soon. We haven't had that stratospheric, commercial female "larger than life" star for a while. Will 2018 give us another Pop Icon on the levels of Britney/Xtinct/Gaga/Katy? Will we even see a new female star impact the way they did in their debuts, ever again?
October 2, 20177 yr Well, did we get any in 2015 after 1995 brought us Spice Girls and 2005 gave us Rihanna? EDIT: we got SG in '96, my bad. Edited October 2, 20177 yr by jafetsigfinns
October 2, 20177 yr I think it's very plausible. Obviously they couldn't be a huge #1 debut but if a catchy song gets noticed by enough people it could happen!
October 2, 20177 yr Well if you include Katy Perry in that analysis, it's worth remembering that while she had an instant mega-smash with "I Kissed A Girl", her initial success was strong but not blockbuster. It wasn't until her "Teenage Dream" album that she cemented her status, so for all we know there's a 'moderately' big artist right now who's on the brink of something similar.
October 2, 20177 yr Can't see the streaming crowd getting behind a female pop act in big enough numbers.

It wasn't until her "Teenage Dream" album that she cemented her status, so for all we know there's a 'moderately' big artist right now who's on the brink of something similar. It's based on countries selection. For sample : In many European countries "I Kissed A Girl" and "Hot and Cold" were much bigger than any song from "Teenage Dream". Check Katy's thread with her top 40 chartruns (full stats for One of the Boys and Teenage Dream eras).
October 2, 20177 yr Author And of course we got Kylie in 1988! :D :DI was going to include her but I couldn't remember if she waa 87 or 88 or 89. So left her haha. And I guess we can also count Kate Bush too! :kink:
October 2, 20177 yr Author In the UK, Britney was early 1999 and GaGa was early 2009 :PYeah but in the US they were mid to late 98/08. :P and with it being a lot more accessible and easier for the UK to get up to speed with music artists than back in them days, I see no reason as to why we can't be up to speed with them too :kink:
October 3, 20177 yr Who's to say we already had one though? (Actually I think Reputation could build on the success of 1989 if it perfects the "promo single that took off on its own" thing Dark Horse was doing four years ago. That means no premature second single release that hinders LWYMMD nor does it detract or derail from the current era's trajectory.)
October 3, 20177 yr So we're just gonna gloss over Reputation? How is that even relevant? Have you even read or remotely understood the topic?
October 3, 20177 yr I just can't see Camila or Dua being the next GaGa/Britney/Rihanna, though I'm sure they'll both remain successful for the next few years. I doubt we'll get one for a while as streaming trends don't really support 'pure pop'.
October 3, 20177 yr I disagree with the 10 year-pattern, you totally made that up... i'd say there has been a continous of female singers popping out every couple years in the last 30 years but I agree with the last post, now cos of streaming it's more difficult as streaming is biased against female pop singers unless you make a deal with spotify alal taylor 1984 madonna 1985 whitney 1988 kylie 1990 mariah carey 1994 celine dion 1996 alanis 1999 britney spears, christina aguilera 2001 alicia keys 2002 pink 2003 beyonce 2006 rihanna 2008 adele 2009 lady gaga 2012 taylor swift 2014 ariana grande
October 3, 20177 yr I think rather than female, the next huge star to emerge will probably be Post Malone, like Drake, I'm getting Hotline Bling teas from Rockstar. Dua and Camila I feel will the closest to a Gaga/Katy sort of thing, but females can't smash like that in the streaming era really, I think it comes down to the songs really. New Rules and Havana for exmple struck the exact right chord whereas Lost In Your Light bombed for Dua.
