October 19, 20178 yr Kinda ironic really, when the #1 single is called 'Rockstar' haha. I guess one of the last big alternative top 10 hits was Walk The Moon - Shut Up & Dance, maybe? But Imagine Dragons, although no top 10's) have done really well for themselves with songs like 'Radioactive', 'Demons', 'Thunder' etc.. Walk The Moon "Shut Up + Dance" - while I love it - feels like that sort of 'wedding reception' song, it shouldn't have to be so sickeningly commercial to be a hit. DNCE "Cake By The Ocean" another example although even calling that rock is loose.
October 19, 20178 yr Author Let's name all of the top 10 hit singles from the rock genre from this decade - I can't think of many :o Kings Of Leon the last really successful rock band. Do we include Coldplay? AC/DC - Highway To Hell (#4, 2013)† Arctic Monkeys - Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High? (#8, 2013) Brandon Flowers - Crossfire (#8, 2010) Delirious? - History Makers (#4, 2010)† Fall Out Boy - My Songs Know... (#5, 2013) Goo Goo Dolls - Iris (#3, 2011)† Hozier - Take Me To Church (#2, 2015) James Bay - Hold Back the River (#2, 2015) James Bay - Let It Go (#10, 2015) Kings Of Leon - Radioactive (#7, 2010) Prince & The Revolution - Purple Rain (#6, 2016)† Trashmen - Surfing Bird (#3, 2010)† Twenty One Pilots - Heathens (#5, 2016) Walk the Moon - Shut Up and Dance (#4, 2015) †originally released before the 2010s (not including Coldplay, 5SOS and other bands that are more pop than rock) I think that's it...
October 19, 20178 yr Thanks Dan - that list is just so small, particularly when you take out the old school hits that repeaked for one reason or another this decade. I don't really understand why some rock bands aren't far more successful on streaming though.
October 19, 20178 yr I would personally still class Coldplay as rock/indie as they are a band even if the songs they've released have been pop! Paradise should be one surely?
October 19, 20178 yr Dance music has dominated the charts for ages but surely this can't last forever
October 19, 20178 yr Dance music has dominated the charts for ages but surely this can't last forever Not since 2014 and to a lesser extent 2015 it hasn't...
October 19, 20178 yr Author yes sadly the days of dance being the dominant genre are well over, it's definitely urban season now.
October 19, 20178 yr yes sadly the days of dance being the dominant genre are well over, it's definitely urban season now. Suits me just fine! Great to see so many songs I wouldn't normally hear outside 1Xtra or at uni actually reflect that popularity in the charts.
October 19, 20178 yr Author Where is Matt Terry from xfactor? We don't have anything outside the top 40.
October 19, 20178 yr I would personally still class Coldplay as rock/indie as they are a band even if the songs they've released have been pop! By that logic, The Vamps are a rock/indie band... :P
October 19, 20178 yr By that logic, The Vamps are a rock/indie band... :P lol it's certainly a different experience listening to a Coldplay album in comparison to The Vamps vocally, lyrically and in many other ways. Albeit I understand The Vamps played their own instruments and aren't not the product of a record company etc!
October 19, 20178 yr By that logic, The Vamps are a rock/indie band... :P As are the Black Eyed Peas, as I discovered during hosting Pointless to my annoyance...
October 19, 20178 yr Coldplay are pop Crazy how all has changed for indie/rock I was listening earlier to an old mix Cd from 2004 and theres so many hits from that era: Snow Patrol - Run, Franz Ferdinand -Take me out, Damien Rice - Cannonball, Keane - Somewhere only we know, killers - Mr brightside, Streets - Dry your eyes, u2 - Vertigo, all coming out in a matter of months And now barely 1 hit per year

October 19, 20178 yr Hoping that St. Vincent can stay in the Album Top 10 tomorrow, her Promo this week has been similar to Lana's first week for 'Lust For Life' ie a stripped back performance at the O2 Academy, Brixton.
