He wasn't Mark Goodier.

Wes compared to everyone else up to and including Greg James (because of the format the chart show now has, I rate him as a presenter) - was better. Just compared to Mark Goodier it was a step down. Mark Goodier knew how to make it fun and had all the chart facts up his sleeve. You'd always know how many positions a song was down, or up... how many weeks it had been on the chart... info on their past hits, what album the single came from... and there'd be a ton of suspense building up to the number 1. You get none of that these days.

He didn't play all 40 records, and he was more informal than Mark Goodier. It felt a bit more like the commercial chart show and it was just a bit of a shock at the time. In retrospect though, he was much better than the likes of Fearne & Reggie and Jameela.

This explains it well, although I don't remember him being any more informal than Mark - he certainly was informal though. I liked on Monday mornings he'd run down the top 10 again on the Chris Moyles breakfast show and have all the geeky facts then as well

Wes tried a bit too hard to be down with the kids and made bad jokes. Mark was almost always serious, and rarely gave opinions on the artists or songs.

So just like Reggie Yates then? (more or less)

Quite sad that I was too young to ever experience the Mark Goodier era of the chart show, it was Reggie solo when I started listening.

I think the fact Wes was virtually a new DJ didn't help whereas Mark Goodier was a radio 1 stalwart who had been on the station since the 80s. It was as if the BBC decided to not give the chart the respect it deserved. Added to that the downward spiral of totps and the changing way Music as being consumed meant that the chart seemed to be less relevant!

Bruno Brookes was also brilliant at the Top 40 - he really brought a sense of excitement and occasion to the chart that just doesn't exist now sadly.

Here he is on his 1st chart back in charge in March 1992 when they extended the chart show to 3 hours for the first time: https://www.mixcloud.com/1869300/uk-top-40-...kes-15-03-1992/

Bruno had been on radio 1 for ages before that though didn't he?

Bruno had been with Radio 1 for around 18 months when he became top 40 presenter in March 1986.

Yeh he's recently been introduced on totps 1984 episodes!
Plus, if you watch the BBC4 repeats, you would have seen him on the first edition from 1978, which was repeated at the start of 2013. He was standing near to Peter Powell, trying (and successfully!) to get his face on camera. He must have just been starting out on local radio at the time and somehow managed to wangle his way onto an episode of the programme...

  • 2 weeks later...

I must say listening to MistaJam do Dance Anthems again on Friday was so refreshing. He takes a vested interested in the show and it was great to hear tracks from his 1Xtra shows, not to mention the mixing actually being done by him instead of talking over a pre-mixed track :kink:

I look forward to him covering again and when he takes over the Saturday show!

From hearing him in the car. I heard that he pressed some wrong buttons or something but when you sound enthusiastic unlike some djs... its fine because he was again solid as host of the chart. He sounds way more professional than Greg does too Imo. If you can't get Scott at this stage then I'd welcome him doing it full time!
