This became the only song to DNQ for me in BJSC in an otherwise great year, and coincidentally it is also the lowest of seven entries of ours in the Hot 100 (we sent ten but three of those were older tracks). After liking 'Waiting For The Stars' I was intrigued to see this appear in my release radar and it instantly outshone it. Upon further research it turns out this is a vocal reworking of an album track of his and fair to say it certainly works a lot better with the La Bien Querida vocal (she herself is Spanish), her sweet vocal tones and Vitalic's disco vibes in the production do more than enough to overcome the language barrier. It's like nothing else in the charts and clearly takes a lot of influence from the 70s/80s but in a very fresh way. Not at all what I expected from Childish Gambino either with the entire song being sung, but with the funky vibes and brilliant instrumental (that outro particularly) it ended up doing very well for itself here, particularly after the meme gave it a second life. Not surprising that this was very critically acclaimed because this isn't really my type of music but I love it. Not enough to seek out the rest of the album though, I don't imagine anything else of his will come close to this. The use of it at the end of Get Out worked really well too. 'All Stars' is his latest single which sadly got overlooked in the charts, not receiving much of a push with no Radio 1 playlisting annoyingly. Yes it was released way back in June and he still hasn't followed it up, damn his inconsistent release schedule! Like 'Places' this got off to a slow start but eventually reached a reasonable peak of #27 and had great longevity. It's another song of his with his newfound future house slash pop formula which he is at the top of his game with, so it's a shame he's not getting consistent chart success with it. It's also another song with the vocal talents of ALMA who I hope to see more of in 2018 despite the major letdown of 'Phases'. More on her later though as 'Chasing Highs' will be chasing a high position in the chart. In an unsurprisingly quiet year for Rihanna, with her messy ANTI campaign having long finished and her current release schedule not being quite as hectic as it was at the start of the decade, it is her only appearance in the Hot 100. To date, 2014 is the only year which she had no appearances. The song itself made great use of a Santana sample which was no doubt inspired by the recent comeback of Latin music but it is still very much a hip-hop song. Riri is the highlight of the song as you would expect but DJ Khaled's iconic shouting and Bryson's guest verse are both good additions too. When it comes to songs about sex, no one does it consistently well as Queen Rihanna herself. Now hopefully we get some more of her in 2018, we've waited long enough already. And unlike a few remakes this is far from pointless with brilliant house production bringing together elements of piano and organ house, it's not that far from what you'd expect from someone like Duke Dumont. Calvin had such a good year in 2016 for how little he released, and two out of three making it to #1 in my chart isn't at all bad. This one spent 7 weeks at #1, one more than TIWYCF although I do prefer that a fair bit, this was just lucky to have barely any competition. Such a banger though, Calvin just keeps on giving. I just hope he either gives us an album in 2017 or more frequent singles though, I can't do with just three every year!!! Well he did give us an album (yass) though he was to drastically change his style after this single. More on that later. Quite unfortunate timing on Calvin's part for releasing the song when he did as it surprisingly misses the year-end top 40 again when it would've been a top 10 contender if the entire chart run was in one tracking year. This was one of them, entering at #2 only behind 'Without You' and would have easily been a #1 if he'd released the tracks one-by-one. It's got everything we love about the new Avicii, right from the acoustic guitar opening to the synth breakdown. It sounds like it would fit very well on the 'Stories' album and I'd say is even better than most of that album. He hasn't lost it at all and I'm very excited for what he'll release this year. 'Funk Wav Bounces' doesn't have any Calvin vocals, I believe it's the first album of his to not feature his voice on any of the tracks too. thanks guys~
