I'm really f***ing bored of nostalgia to be honest... I want to celebrate new things, be surprised, etc. Nothing like that is happening in Spiceworld anymore, so I seriously hope their return and new found group-love actually develops into something more tangiable.

Otherwise, count on me only for the touring and a couple of the nostalgia-driven music releases. I am not here for merch anymore, I have too many

YO BUZZJACK!

A fan on Facebook's Spice Circle is saying that Biff liked a comment they (a fan) made on an instagram post about how it is our fault that the girls are scared to write new music because we've been so negative about their more recent music output (i.e. Headlines, Voodoo, Song for Her). :???:

Like, personally I think the criticisms are fair. Plus, the fandom *will* buy and stream the music. We will buy the multiple variations of whatever version of CD and Vinyl they put out. We will turn up.

It's not our fault the music hasnt really appealed to the general public though... :teresa:

Biff has said on Popjustice forums and on the Melanie C Q&A video that this is why he's afraid to release the Forever sessions he did. It's a stupid excuse. I find it hard to believe him and girls truly care what a few dozen hardcore fans think online.

The girls have never tried to properly write and record a comeback single. Headlines and Voodoo were created because the record label wanted to market the greatest hits with two new songs instead of including album outtakes.

While I'm sure it's true that the reason they're hesitant to do new music is because they're afraid they can't recreate that Spice magic, it's a bit much to ask us to basically like any old crap they come up with so that we don't hurt their feelings.

Headlines, Voodoo and Song For Her were all written in a hurry (the last one was supposedly written as a theme for a scrapped reality project). Of course they're not up to scratch (though I actually think Headlines fits nicely into the greatest hits, just not as a Spice Girls in 2007 comeback single).

If anything that keeps them from going into the studio is the fact that they all need to be committed to it - they all need to go into the studio, vibe for a bit and figure out where they're all now. They can't just all go in and do their parts when it suits them seperately.

Their reticence to release any old or new music because of the fanbase’s reaction to certain other material… is a pretty annoying excuse.

My other thoughts would be basically be repeating all of the points raised in your posts, so I’ll just say - I concur!

Agreed.

Plus, I'm sure that in general, most fans would prefer to hear the tracks from the vault that were created while they were at the top as a group versus demo (and largely subpar) versions of songs we already have.

Headlines was ok. It's better live because they are doing it together unlike when they recorded it.

VooDoo had potential to be WDYTYA -ish but again, the lack of unity on the vocals was a sore spot for me. IMO, My Strongest Suit is better than VooDoo. I've actually been playing it often recently - I have a newfound appreciation for it that I didn't have in my teens

Yeah I agree with this so much. It is ok to have opinions on the music, specially since it was so clearly half-arsed. These are the same girls who would do everything together, and Headlines and Voodoo were created with them in different countries (and pretty sure some of them didnt even write a single word to it). Song for Her was for a commercial and just sounded like an out-dated Neo project...

They need to be honest as musicians, get together in the same room, experiment and see what comes out. Maybe then they will create new magic.

Agreed.

I agree with everything you said. Most fans want to hear all of the unreleased tracks because they were recorded in the 90's. If some hardcore fans judge a demo too harshly then that's on them.

Agreed.

OMG The demos of songs like Who Do You Think You Are and the Mama Biffco Mix were such a dissapointment. WDYTYA is barely any different from the actually released song anyway, whats the point!! I think if a song is really different, then yeah it would make sense. Like, I think the If You Cant Dance and Wannabe demos were great releases, because they are quite different from the final songs. The rest was a bit meh...

The problem with Headlines was the soppiness of it and the basic production. Had it had more woompth to it (like the live version) it probably would have done much better (and with a better video and live performances for promo!!)

O nthe lack of unity in the vocals, you can hear that in both Voodoo and Headlines. They sound pasted together, which is obvious they were cos some of the girls were in different countries doing other projects at the time. It's the same with Melanie C in Forever album. Sometimes she sounds pasted on top of the songs (cos she was!)...

So... yeah girls. Get together, work on it and put out whatever you think best represents you right now as a band. Move on from the nostalgia WE ARE TIRED

I kinda hope they're not really saying that behind the scenes.

Here's the deal. If I'm not mistaken, none of them (in addition to Biff) have ever said anything good about Voodoo. They also removed the song off the 2007 tour setlist...with Mel B claiming it was because they were struggling with the choreography. If they really did believe in the song and wanted to showcase it, they could have pretty easily changed the choreography. The steps weren't commanded to them by the gods. And it's not like it would have been out of character for them to just wing the performance. So. They clearly didn't feel much more strongly about the song than the fanbase.

Song For Her? Wasn't the TV show idea long abandoned by the time its theme song leaked? It's not like they were so proud of this that they were making any efforts to get it heard.

Feed Your Love? I don't remember the overall reaction to this being negative, really. It was about right for a pretty good (but fairly low-key) little unreleased song that was part of a somewhat muted rollout.

So it really comes down to the Headlines reception. From what we've heard from behind the scenes, the girls and Biff honestly did really like this track at one time. So. Okay. They may have been disappointed with how the fans perceived this one song..........15 years ago.

23 Years ago, Geri left the Spice Girls.

It was sadly the beginning of the end o the group as a recording act, and it forever changed a generation of young people the world over.

Looking back now, it was very clear that Geri was ready to leave at the time. I mean, photoshoots like this for instance, did point towards Geri being out of it:

Personally I loved them in 1998, and I think them as a group were so good in that era. They were coming off their Spiceworld oversaturation and charicatures and they were becoming a more credible pop act (in my opinion).

But yes, the band being a member down in such spetacular form was quite the knife in the fandom. Like, it was main news stories across the world, TV news opened with this as the leading world news of the day and it became a spetacle in its own right the world over. It is hard to overstate just how important this was.

Of course, in true girl power spirit, Geri was welcomed back into the group as their friendship grew stronger over the years, but it took its time and by the time the group did some new music and touring again, it seemed like they hadnt evolved much music wise as a group, which is a shame.

What were your memories from the time? And how do you reflect on it now?

Oh, I still remember that super dramatic call from a friend...Geri left the group! We already had tickets to see the girls on the American leg of their tour in July. I liked Geri, though my favorite members were Mel B and Emma...and I already recognized Mel C's importance to the songs (my fandom of her as an individual kicked in with Northern Star). So. Honestly, when I got that call...my bigger concern was that the group would split or cancel their tour.

I was definitely taken aback by Geri's leaving. Living in America, I guess the last round of major appearances the group had taken was the Spice World promo around January or so. The girls were showing a united front and Geri was just as united as any of the rest of them. It wasn't until years later that I would see interviews and performances leading up to May 1998 where Geri seemed fairly aloof.

In June 1998, MTV aired a clip of the four piece performing the opening show of the tour's American leg...and that did a lot to confirm to me the show would go on. When I finally caught them in July, the show was fab. They seemed as good as ever...and I was game for whatever music this lineup could give us. It wouldn't be until a few years later that I would realize the focus and musical direction that Geri actually brought to the group.

Anyway. Obviously, I wish Geri didn't leave when she did. I consider Spiceworld one of the true perfect big fun pop albums...deserving of mention next to Madonna's True Blue, Janet Jackson's Control, and Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual. Top to bottom...perfect fun pop records. Had the five piece continued, I think it would have been natural their sales would continue a downslide. The pop landscape was starting to get crowded, and they no longer solely owned a corner of the market. But. Spiceworld is the result of the girls and their collaborators at their creative peak...and I wish we could have seen what else they could have done together. While I mostly like Forever, it's not the product of a united group.

Fully agreed. The Forever we DIDN'T get likely reflects a united four piece, which is why I think a lot of us want it. It's the last snapshot of the SGs from that very magical time.

I dont remember being massively affected by her leaving at all, I think its because I'd been doing my high school exams at the time and that was getting all my attention.

Looking back its a sad time for all concerned but these things happen and will always happen. I'm happy Geri got to make Schizophonic and in all honesty with babies and solo ambitions I dont think the Spice Girls would've lasted that much longer anyway even if Geri had remained. They got too big too fast and burned out.

Im not sure on this take tbh. Had they taken a short break after the tour and not 3 years, they would have remained incredibly popular still, at least for a couple more albums. Of course they wouldnt have reached the hights of 1996-1998 but ultimately they were in a great position to continue to do extremely well, release more music and tour.

Spicemania was only over *because* they took too long a break. 3 years is a long time in pop and sadly the public moved on. I genuinely think that a 4-piece album in 1999 with pop music and r'n'B would have done still really well...

Alas.. here we are.

I don’t think schizo said that another album wouldn’t do well more that the girls had other ambitions in life which were always going to get in the way. Tbh Mel B and Victoria kind of killed the group when they got pregnant. They were never going to be able to commit to the group in the same way after that they had far more important priorities to deal with.
It didn’t affect me cos i didn’t like her, she was always trying to get attention over the rest of the girls, so I was happy when she left. Only with time I saw she was the heart and essence of the band.

Hi girlies :cheer:

Tamir has launched a new Youtube channel where he promises he will share some unseen Spice content and UNRELEASED MUSIC!!!.

So far, he has uploaded Viva Forever and Never Give Up On The Good Times live in Sweden, which you can see below. It is the best quality of *any leak* we have so far of the Spiceworld Tour 1998 and it looks very well composed, from a Betacam tape so it looks really high quality, which is super nice.

He also promises to release unheard Spice demos, Geri's Disco Sister tracks and Melanie C unreleased songs :teresa: :yahoo:

Go give him a follow on the channel: Spice Circle on YouTube

WHAT DO YOU THINK???!!

I love this footage so much! They are all top notch performers, but you can see that Geri was checked out in this footage (though she has always been very aloof in live performances lol)
