I'm currently reading through old newspaper clippings (I will share articles and unseen images in Spice Circle at some point) and I can't help but think firing Simon was a huge mistake. There was next to no negative press aside from some articles regarding the sponsorships and the band vs brand argument, but Spiceworld had a lot of hype and they were claiming it would be one of "the biggest selling albums of all time".

Fast forward a week later and the Daily Mirror are talking about the Spice balloon bursting and whether they should split up, instead of being remembered as has beens. And not to mention, calling the 191,000 opening week sales disappointing and using it's shipment figure 1.4 million to say there was a lot of unsold copies. When we know for fact Virgin shipped out what was projected to sell over the Christmas period.

The press turned on them at the worst time. I'm surprised they managed to get the Christmas #1 with 'Too Much'. I imagine this is why Spiceworld only sold 1.6m vs Spice 3m. Once Simon left, the floodgates were open and Matthew Wright was relentless.

100%! Simon had deals with the press where they were granted so much access etc if they printed positive things (within reason of course) and if any of them turned against them they would basically be black-listed. They lost this protection when they lost him.

I've always been a little dubious about the divide and conquer method they talk about, it can't have been as bad as they suggested since all of them (except Melanie C) have gone back to work with him both solo and with the group.

You also have to remember he had 5 individual girls, how he handled say Mel C would be very different to how he handled Mel B. The divide and conquer was probably more treating each girl differently to get more from them.
The divide and conquer tactic seem to be a fairly commonly used with groups - ie "if you girls can't agree on this we'll do it THIS way".

Yeah, I agree with this. Simon did play it wrong of course, and we don't know the full extent of how hard it was for them back then. But it always seemed to me that firing Simon was a stupid idea, at the worst time... Everyone turned on them. I know it is very Girl Power of them to 'take control' but honestly it just looked messy. They could have just demanded a more healthy work/life balance, as they all had the same level of power on decision making as Simon (or at least we are lead to believe!)...

But ultimately, Matthew Wright deserves to choke forever. What a nasty, disgusting man -_-

Simon was more fatherly with Geri and Emma, the latter especially was extremely close to him and had to really be convinced by the other girls to sack him.

He just overworked them but he also shaped them into the biggest popstars in the world.

“fatherly”, “Emma”, “close to him”

I need that documentary where they finally reveal she was actually smarter than Geri, but she didn’t need to be as “talkative” as Geri to get what she wanted. I need a spin-off too: Emma - Baby Anymore.

Emma was on Sunday Bruch today and Sharleen Spiteri told about how Texas was performing with the Wu Tang Clan at the Brits the same year the Spice Girls were opening and the girls asked her to intro them to Method Man and he was super happy to do it. It was a cute story!

Then they laughed about the Spice Girls still being so in your face today

She was also hopeful something might happen with the Spice Girls. But it was a very general chat and the usual 'we have kids!' line came up of course

She is also clearly in campaign to get going with the Christmas tour, she seemed very excited for it :smoke:

Agreed!!! If they hadn't fired him and had just said they needed to slow down, no more movies with albums at the same time, less sponsorship, etc, the history of the Spicy Ladies would be very different. Geti would have stayed for a third album, Spiceworld wouldn't have flopped, and they would have either done four albums, one sans Geri, and then started going solo, oe they would all have fone solo in 2000, set up with a much cleaner end to the band.

They were musicians, not business people, ans the whole reason of having managers and agents is so thst they sort out the business side so you don't have to.

Emma in The Times:

Nevertheless, it looks like there is going to be another Spice Girls reunion. The long-rumoured appearance at Glastonbury this month is definitely not happening; however, all five former members are in discussions regarding an anniversary tour. Yes, even Victoria Beckham, who bowed out after that 2012 Olympic closing ceremony, seems to be up for it.

“We are all talking about it, which is just so exciting,” Bunton says. “There are a few anniversaries coming up.” Next year it will be 30 years since the group, then called Touch, first formed. In 2026, it will be 30 years since they released Wannabe. “And I also truly believe that we will one day play Glastonbury. Everyone wants it to happen and it will.”

Jones is shooting her quizzical looks.

“Do you think I shouldn’t be talking about this?” Bunton asks him.

“Not my call.” He shrugs a little nervously.

30 years hoodies edition are coming next year.....
I have the feeling this is going to be an all 5 tour / appearance - and curtain falls.
Yeah if Victoria and even Geri sign up for it then it'll definitely be the last tour as both have completely moved on.

I’ve never known a band love releasing hoodies so much

documentary with all 5

possible tour with only 4

curtain falls

Melanie at Glasto kinda confirmed the rumors. But she highlighted the word “dragging” the girls there next year. That means there might be some stumbling blocks? I wonder if it’s also a problem related to live singing. In their tours, it’s always a safe place where they can find a way to mime when necessary and other small tricks to help the girls with their confidence. I’ll be so worried for Vicky B and Geri. The crowd can be mean at times.
I dont think it confirms anything, more like Melanie is doing campaign to get the girls to perform... Emily Davis who curates the headline acts, has mentioned that there are two confirmed female headliners for next year that have never done the festival before. This could be the girls' last chance as we know that Glasto will be taking a year off in 2025 and honestly I cant see them being active in 2026 (to be honest, I can barely see them being active next year either but you know...)
