Jonathan Portes Retweeted Jacob Rees-Mogg

The Sun has now corrected - thoroughly & at length - this complete nonsense, which bears no resemblance to reality. Unfortunately @Jacob_Rees_Mogg doesn't appear to have the integrity to do the same.

He won't read it until it's inscribed on tablets of stone in Latin.

They are running scared after the calls to cancel the referendum due to Leave'a cheating!!

The more I think about it, the angrier I get.

How DARE they strip me of my rights and European identity. How dare they! And all over 1% and to keep the Tory party from splitting/ being replaced by UKIP. Throw your own rights away but you can't have mine.

I wasn’t as angry post indyref as I am post EUref. 55/45 was more decisive, with only 4 local authorities voting for. This time I’m viciously angry. I’ve only ever known life in the EU and the incredible benefits that being an EU citizen brings. Losing that citizenship is painful, it’s the only connection I have to my country or Birth.

It’s an utter disgrace what’s going on.

Question:

Some in the German Parliament ant EU citizenship to be given to any Brit who wants it. Would you apply for that?

In. A. Heartbeat.

I’m moving to Berlin soon and first thing on my list is to go talk to someone about citizenship, being that I’m at a slight advantage of being (West) German born. (but to British RAF parents rather than German parents so no automatic citizenship)

Just don't mention Dresden (a play on the Fawlty Towers scene). :teresa:

May I propose something?

I'm sure we're all tired of hearing the same old arguments about the EU/referendum, so perhaps we could start a separate EU thread *strictly* for new developments/newspaper articles, and confine the pontificating to this one?

Nah. Nobody is forced to comment on anything. Articles with no substance to them need to be challenged and that requires debate and alternative sources to prove that. I'm not about to let any old bullshit pass by without comment as if it's a factual piece with equal weighting (that's the job of the Daily Mail). If it's a good article or reasoned opinion then I will also say that. If you can't accept there are other viewpoints on a particular newspaper clipping then don't post it. I'm perfectly happy for anything I post to be commented on and I'll weigh up whether the comments need comments or not. It's the whole point of "Discussion Thread".

Your Fawlty Towers attempt at humour missed the mark. It was funny in Fawlty Towers because the War was recent, the Germans were upset by it and Basil had brain injury and thought he was avoiding saying the one thing he was frightened of bringing up to them to avoid offence and keep up appearances (his own obsession).

It's about as funny as saying to someone "Don't mention Agincourt" "Don't mention Hiroshima" "Don't mention Coventry" without context. Lols....

Very droll.

Surely you must've realised I was not proposing shutting down debate on new issues raised by Brexit?

However, you yourself have complained about the repetitious nature of debate here - going over the same issues over & over again?

Where did *that* come from? I've never claimed I can't accept there are other viewpoints, regardless of whether or not I agree with them!

I see you haven't responded to why you feel it is right to strip us of our European rights and identity over 1% and why it is right to take people's jobs both at home and abroad.

Because it is not I who have done that.

You voted for Brexit...

Precisely - that's *all* I did - along with 17.4m others.

I refuse to be a scapegoat for everyone else who voted for brexit!

You voted for it without a care for the ramifications for others though.

I did it because I believed it was necessary for the independence of the UK in the long-term.

Believed......so is this no longer a thing?

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean?

Because it is not I who have done that.

You voted Leave; therefore, you voted in favour of depriving us of our EU citizenship. It really is as simple as that.
