I was thinking yesterday about the fact that everything I buy gaming/technology-wise is ALWAYS brand new, whether that be the latest video game, phone, laptop or gadget. There have been numerous reports over the years of the pre-owned market having a detrimental effect on sales, and the money available to developers, publishers and creators for future projects.

For me, I think it's the underlying feeling of being the first person to have the specific physical object, and that no-one else has touched it or used it (and therefore it not being pristine) beforehand. I've never shopped at the likes of CeX or Grainger Games* either (although I have been in both shops).

I can see the pro-argument for pre-owned being that it is cheaper and that you don't necessarily NEED a brand new item, but what are the views of our members?

*I know Grainger Games sell new but their pre-owned market is massive compared to rival shops.

Hmm for games it depends on deals or price of new copy as some can be a bit expensive and being the saver I am could get pre-owned as its cheaper oops. Teach i prefer buying new in case it's faulty pre-owned.
There is no shops with pre-owned videogames in my country.

CEX isn't even that much cheaper a lot of the time annoyingly  I do get games there if they're like £10-£20 cheaper or if they're old ones I can't find anywhere else though. Tech I'd always rather get new, like a game I might well only play through once is ok for being old but a laptop, phone or console you're gonna want to last you a few years really. You don't know what condition it's in when you get it, I'm always worried I'd end up paying like say £300 for a good laptop and it breaks after a few months, I'd rather just pay the extra couple of hundred or whatever and get one that'll last.

With games I'm kind of new by default as my Steam library = my games library. Which I like, it means that I'm supporting the developers of the games I like when I buy a new game, even if I'm buying it in a sale as I always do. But I suppose you're talking about physicals in which case the last time I bought a physical game was a LONG TIME AGO.

Tech I have a mix with, there's no developers I want to support with most tech and I don't feel like I NEED the newest stuff, especially with a phone, my current phone is secondhand from my cousin and works fine. A computer I'd probably buy newer parts for but that's because I really care about the quality of my computer. Other tech that I just need for a specific purpose, like the phone, all that matters is that it works.

I always go with new! In regards to tech, I trust in it lasting longer if it's new, and I like it being pristine to begin with and being the only one to have used it.

Steam is the one from some reasons, because I don't buy any new PC games.

Somewhere from 2011-2012 year you necessarily need to have it, even for a physical games. :(

Not really fussed about games, whatever is the best value. Tech is usually new, although when my PS3 died I replaced it with a pre-owned one

Most games I have are pre-owned, most places wont take them/resell them if they're not of a good quality so I never worry.

My first DS wa second hand and did me fine but otherwise my consoles were all new.

True, I've only ever had one game pre-owned that didn't work and that was Sonic & All Stars Racing on Wii that was like £2.50 in CEX at the time and I wasn't gonna go mad over £2.50.
