#9: Ed Sheeran - "Perfect/Duet/Symphony" [10 Votes // 31.25%]

3rd/4th single, ÷

Peak: #1 (3 weeks (5 weeks currently))

The most recent #1 (as of this week) crashes out at #9. Ed Sheeran is well known for sappy love ballads that people here love for like a minute but then end up slagging him off for it for the next six months. This is standard Ed, not necessarily at its finest because he's made better ballads, but it's standard Ed no less. The US waited a while after "Castle On The Hill" to send another Ed single to the charts, and it seemed like this was going to have an organic rise to the top; solid promo, music video impact, the works...

But then came "Perfect Duet", a rework categorized by most on Buzzjack as "blatant chart manipulation to get the Xmas #1". This isn't anything abnormal in the US as we've seen singles get a remix treatment and reach new heights there a countless amount of times ("E.T." and the Britney remix of "S&M" being main examples). Then "Perfect Symphony" came out and by that time it was considered overkill. The song itself isn't bad by any means (everyone considers it boring, but I like the instrumental arrangement of the original), but I do think the original would have smashed on its own.

Actually curious to see what will go out next now ~

Sticking with Taylor once again. x

Vote for Cardi B, but I'd be fine with DJ Khaled leaving next too :P

I feel like Starboy is going to win this, despite being a 2016 song and only a 2017 #1 from being at the top in the New Year :P Don't get me wrong, Starboy is leagues ahead of everything else here in terms of quality, but I don't think I'd consider it a proper 2017 #1

I only consider number 1s of a year to be ones that got there in that particular year, not held on from the previous year/reclimbed from a previous year. Still yes I do agree "Starboy" is the highest quality here, along with "Shape Of You" - not that anyone here will agree with that...

Exactly, that’s why “Starboy” is on here and not “Black Beatles” :P
I voted Rockstar. Have never understood the appeal around the song. It's just dull and mopey. In an ideal world I Fall Apart would be Post's biggest hit to date, not this.
