"Shine" heads "King" for me too, though not by much, Both 10/10.

On 2nd listen, it seems that it isn't until the final chorus of "Sanctify" that it gets particularly good, actually... it does feel like they can do better.

Oh and I loved "Meteorite".

I don't really get how they can claim this isn't a real single and the first "official" single is still to come?

It had a big build up to release, has a big budget video, was added to Hot Hits UK 10 minutes after release (along with a load of other big playlists) and has been sent to radio. What about this isn't a single?

So, having heard the song by itself without the video, it's not as strong. Still decent, but I'm hearing what other people are saying about it.

As a sampler for their new direction it would be pretty cool. Might do okay as a lead single, but their record company and crew will probably want a guaranteed hit so this one may've just been testing the waters.

they aren’t looking at this as a song to be top 10 on livepopbars; it’s a “reintroduction” refresh, this is us again moment et

it’s also a bit reductive to state that a band is only as good as their most HIT single...’king’ is phenomenal and a huge SMASH but so was ‘take shelter’ / ‘shine’

in fact y&y are rather *.*

It’s quite brilliant though!

Definitely good to have them back

Just heard this now and it’s not that bad! I’m not huge on the video but the song is quite nice, production reminds me of the Black Panther Soundtrack I think which is good
Straight to B list on R1. It’s not a ‘taster’ or ‘buzz’ single. Polydor seem to have put a lot of money and thought behind this release so they are expecting big things from it.

the new songs is a real grower, love it

has been insta-added t R1's b-list this morning

Literally the post above.

I am pretty sure Radio 1 have added "soft" release singles by acts they like before, and then gone on to add the "big" one later?

I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but I do know it has happened in the past.

True, but this has had huge Spotify promo, has been sent to all radio stations (Capital also hammering) and has a big budget video. I don't see how this could be differentiated to a normal single.

I guess the only way we can know now is to wait and see how it all plays out over the next few weeks.

I'm quite sure this is the official lead single - instant Capital and Radio 1 support, a music video and on Hot Hits within half an hour after its release. They're going in hard and I don't see why they'd make this much effort for a buzz single.
and it sounds like a single too... definitely something that could get big.
Honestly I don't get the lukewarm reception for this. 'King' aside, I'm not a massive Y&Y fan and yet I loved this on first listen!
This is exactly how I feel, I'm very very impressed with it!

I've just heard this on R1 and I actually really like it! I thought they went really downhill when they got big (I liked their early singles but 'King' got old for me really quickly and I never liked 'Shine') so I wasn't really anticipating this comeback but this honestly might be their best song, I don't get why it's had such a bad reception!

exactly

it really sounds like a soft release but everything suggests otherwise

if this lead single then they have become v self indulgent / absorbed

Literally why I don’t like Olly Alexander

I wonder if this will be their “Thank You” or “7/27” moment with a big lead and a few minor hits.
