Imagine what the impact would have been if this technology was around in 1996 when 2 PAC got killed!

Unfortunately "Christ " by XXXTension didn't make the Top 200. I know you are GUTTED about that Midge.

Sorry I don’t even speak Spanish lol

Not that I support any of this but he sure has some interesting song titles :P “I don't even speak spanish lol“ is my fave from that list
I don't really want to promote his deep cuts but, for the record, that song is a huge bop tbh. X himself is barely on it and it sounds nothing like the rest of his music; it's like his 'I Like It'. Here's a good cover of it ~

Yeah, X died at the peak of his career. I read someone suggest he's the biggest musician death since The Notorious B.I.G. in terms of current popularity, and I can't think of anyone to refute that with.

She hadn't released music in about 4 years, had she? No disrespect to her of course, and there might have been big anticipation (though admittedly I don't recall hearing about her much in her last years), but I don't think it's the same as XXXTENTACION's biggest hit having been released 3 months ago.

David Bowie then?

His album was actually on its way to #1 before he died, albeit briefly. Although admittedly he hadn't had a Top 40 hit since 2013.

xxxt was just starting, he wasn't at the peak of his career, he had a #20 hit as his biggest achievement in the uk
A song not going Top 40 doesn’t really say that much about an artists popularity though to be fair. Not since streaming was introduced anyway, and definitely not artists such as David Bowie

Yes, agreed- but he was arguably on his way up to his career peak and in many respects that actually drives a lot of demand from those who may have heard about him but hadn't necessarily checked out his music. I feel a bit like Kobbar here discussing how dying can actually be a really good career move! :P

Hmm, I would've thought David Bowie had been essentially a legacy artist for a few decades, though I'm a poor judge of that as I'm very unfamiliar with his music. I would've sooner suggested Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston as they'd had more recent hits, but that might be putting too much stock into moderate singles chart performance over album sales/tours/whatever. I suppose it's a difference of demographics as obviously Bowie is known and loved by far more people than XXXTENTACION - but probably not as much for his recent music, which is the sort of difference I was getting at. I'll leave it here though because I don't want this thread to be '1 person rebuts everyone's suggestions'

I think the fact his songs are all 2 minutes long is a pretty huge factor in how high his numbers are here. His fans spamming his discog for the same length of time as Avicii's fans did for example would be contributing practically twice as many streams. You could listen to both of his big albums back to back in less than an hour! That along with the fact he was obviously a heavily streaming dependent artist already, and his death has come at a time when he was already very relevant very recently, makes these kind of numbers pretty unsurprising to me (ok maybe I wouldn't have called 'SAD!' getting nearly 800k but beyond that...) It's probably going to fade pretty quickly.

Bear in mind as well that there's no way to 'negatively stream' songs. This is a sign that he was very polarising and had a lot of very devoted fans, more than that he's massively popular among the general public, or even just the Spotify userbase. I think people interpreting this as him 'getting more support than Avicii' etc. are misinterpreting the numbers a bit.

You mean you don't enjoy listening to the entire chart minus your least favourites to cancel out their streams?

Of course, who doesn't xx

Aside: purely from a chart perspective it'll be interesting to see which 3 of his songs actually chart. Theoretically only 'SAD!' and 'Jocelyn Flores' should be on ACR (so 'Moonlight' might well be his highest or second highest) but who knows with how inconsistently the OCC apply their rules.

Funnily enough I've always thought that makes for a big reason why streaming revamps the charts so much. Collectors aside, I'd think that in a sales environment, people would contribute by buying the few singles they resonated with out of the whole chart, which leads to a very fanbase heavy chart. Nowadays with so much streaming being built around big playlists, especially the official top 50 ones, it's very much built around people inadvertently punishing the few songs they may decide to skip, which are likely going to be the more niche ones that may well have thrived in older times.

Three Lions down to #99 today.

No top 40 this week then. 😭

Next week may stand a better chance with 2 matches (Sunday and Thursday)

The boost three lions gets on Spotify on Thursday won't have any effect on the chart just as a reminder.
