'Say You'll Be There' wasn't in 1999

That is not the only reference that isn't from 1999:

Titanic - 1998

Waterfalls - 1995

With both this and 2002 I just took it as songs/things that they would or could associate with that time in their life, I don't see why there's a need to be quite so pedantic about what they reference  Like I went to uni in 2015 and I would associate songs from a few years before with that, it's not all just songs from 2015 that mean something to me when I look back to that period.
People didn’t suddenly stop listening to Say You’ll Be There as soon as the year the year it came out was over. It’s meant to embody the kinds of things that made the 90s what they were.

P.s. it genuinely doesn't really bother me :kink: Just thought I'd be a bit of a dick and drag Anne-Marie into this :kink:

(However I'm deadly serious about Britney :snif:)

The britney thing is difficult because itd make no sense to do ‘sometimes’ or ‘crazy’ as the lyric is ‘hit me baby one more time’ and AM just did it but as the lyrics in the song already, i don’t see why it would be a problem if she donned the look for the video. The sketchers reference is too blasé to link to Brit
what a BRILLIANT song! i actually think the lyrics are great tbh. it's carefree pop that really isn't thinking too hard, but let's not pretend that the max martin production isn't the best part of this.

But this is NOT a Max Martin production. -_-

no Max Martin

It’s not Max, but it’s one of his team/protégés.

That still doesn't make it a Max Martin production.

Exactly. All of these things would have been around and listened to/watched in 1999, but you can't really get a hook out of 'back to the 2nd half of the 90s'. Fair enough if it referenced things from 2000 and later, but it doesn't!

The thing that annoyed me about “2002” was that it referenced things like “99 Problems” that weren't around or hits until 2004. If you're going to be really specific with the year choice DO THE RESEARCH.

That still doesn't make it a Max Martin production.

I didn't say it was.

Exactly, people are doing a bit too much over a very non-serious song. The only slight gripe is that The Sims came out in January 2000, but I'll forgive that as it was a bit of a moment in the video. Everything else is 1999/pre-1999 I think.

it has all of the hallmarks of a max martin production hence why i used max martin as a descriptor (i.e. if someone was to say 90s production for a song that came out this year because it sounds 90s), but way to absolutely ignore my point.

basically my point was

it isn't charli or troye who make this song

it's the production and the producer's flourishes that make it some fabulously polished pop, something very akin to max martin from a producer who is obviously v inspired by or works very closely WITH him

absolute WHOOSH of a moment from whoever voodoo is, and maybe a hard case in pick your battles. dying so hard to correct someone that you ignored the case being presented but by all means do you.

^ The ‘woos’ that go into the chorus are brilliant.

the vocal layering as well - the harmonies and the little touches are so great, and really remind me of katy perry's teenage dream album actually. she would absolutely be someone who would've been presented this song 8 years ago.

I read the comment in the same way Voodoo did, how’s he to know if you meant what you didn’t say?

Anyway, Charli killing it once again. Everything she’s released in the last few years has been 10/10.

So glad this is looking like it’ll be a hit of some kind.

i don’t take issue with it beong misconstrued (can easily see why it would be!) but i dont think it watranted such a smart-arsey reply is all considering the whole point was about the production being the highlight of the song! bjork gave a constructive reply

i actually want to reply to this as well cos i agree - charli has found her sound. indo feel like her strategies are kinda making her career trajectory a lot more messy than it should be (mixtapes in place of albums and the odd release here n there) but it allows her a lot more creative control. i wonder what the status of an album is atm with the mixtape material being so strong?

These nostalgia like type tracks are getting boring now.

I did enjoy the Sims shoutout though (ignoring the fact the first edition was released in 2000).
