Posted October 28, 20186 yr https://www.rt.com/usa/442443-apu-simpsons-cut-show/ IMO yet another example of pandering to political correctness, FFS, he's been in the show for THIRTY YEARS, and only now is there a problem with him?? In any case, most of the characters are based on stereotypes, whatever their race/religion/orientation...
October 28, 20186 yr Who’s going to run the Kwik-EMart? Assuming it’s still there I’ve not watched any Simpsons since series 20. Edited October 28, 20186 yr by gavindeejay
October 28, 20186 yr Author Who’s going to run the Kwik-EMart? Assuming it’s still there I’ve not watched any Simpsons since series 20. Apu's brother? Of course, that'd raise the same issues... :)
October 28, 20186 yr Out of the two options to keep a character with rather tapped out comic potential on a show many think should have ended over a decade ago, or remove him, I’m fairly sure I know which decision gives the geriatric show more attention, especially from those who’ve long since stopped watching. In other words, not a big creative loss but a big reminder that the show is somehow still going.
October 28, 20186 yr This is a bit ridiculous but then I haven’t watch new Simpsons in years. I’ve got the first fourteen seasons on DVD and that’s literally all I need, don’t think I’ve even watched anything after Season 16. Apu was a great character and as many point out, the majority of the characters are ‘offensive’ stereotypes of some sort. There must still be a decent amount of people watching otherwise it wouldn’t still be going but they’re now too afraid to use Apu, the voice actress for Edna Krabapel is dead, the show should just end really.
October 28, 20186 yr Best start removing all the other "offensive stereotypes" now. Lisa and Maggie 2 handers every week from now on.
October 28, 20186 yr I agree with the consensus here although I do think he should be voiced by someone of an Indian ethnicity. btw was the phrasing of dumping Apu intentional?

October 28, 20186 yr TMI x I agree that this is ridiculous given he's a staple for one and the show is based on stereotypes and it's mocking and subversion of those is (well for the first ten seasons at least) what made it so good. If they're going to do this, they might as well dump Ned Flanders for being offensive to Christians, Grampa/Jasper/Moleman for being ageist and Marge for being a 'non-progressive' a stay at home mum while her husband works, and...well name an American or cultural stereotype that isn't covered in the show somewhere! And really The Simpsons doesn't come close to the likes of South Park etc. An easier aspect would surely be just getting an actor of Indian descent to voice him. I should say I haven't watched new episodes of this since like 2007 so it's not like I care that much, and I understand some shows need to adapt to the times a bit more, but this seems such a non-issue for such an ultimately inoffensive show these days.
October 28, 20186 yr people: *get offended that a minority character is enforcing stereotypes* Simpson’s: ok no big no more Apu people: OMG THAT’S RACIST WHERE’S THE CULTURAL REPRESENTATION I’m sorry but what purpose does this serve? There are so many ways to solve this problem but the real problem is that none of them will work because the backlash is still there. America’s political and social climate is so toxic these days.
October 28, 20186 yr Ngl, when I read this I was tempted to scream POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD in a home counties accent :') Everyone who has defended this is really clutching at straws (from what I've seen of course), all shows need to evolve but this is entirely unnecessary and as Chez points out there are other stereotypes in The Simpsons.
October 28, 20186 yr I think the character *should* have been voiced by an Indian actor ideally, but it's been 30 years with Apu as a huge part of the show as he is, it was a different time and he's evolved with the show. I don't think he's portrayed in *that* offensive a way, other than the stereotype of being a shopkeeper and the imitation of an accent by a white actor. But it wasn't a problem for so long and I don't think it should be, it's a case of picking your battles. There's so much more wrong being done towards ethnic minorities than a character like Apu.
October 29, 20186 yr There's so much more wrong being done towards ethnic minorities than a character like Apu.true, there are a billion other things wrong with the world to spend energy on than to waste it on changing a f*cking 80’s cartoon
