Find it crazy that Slade and Wizard don't seem to be considered Christmas essentials anymore!

It was only around five years ago according to a Buzzjack post at the time that I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day was still considered the third Xmas song behind Mariah and The Pogues.

Airplay has no effect on Spotify.

Of course it does. All the stats show that a significant proportion of streamers still listen to the radio too.

I hate both of them. Really old fashioned and cheesy. The only one I like is the snow is falling all around us one, oh and that one with oooh oooh ding dong ding dong. Those two are ok for old songs.

It's still one of the most downloaded Christmas songs every year, Spotify just don't like including it on their main playlists for whatever reason which is a pretty massive handicap considering a very large part of what contributes to the Christmas songs in the chart now is just people listening to those playlists. Honestly I'm kind of surprised that they didn't do the same thing to 'Fairytale Of New York'.

so now Ava is track #1 on HH, they shuffled tracks a bit

think they added a couple of urban tracks, DigDat and Headie One

cannot believe they've placed Baby even lower than before on HH, think the highest it has been is track #31 or around

Slade and Wizzard would probably be among the first names if you asked the public for Christmas songs so why Spotify think they're somehow unpopular now is just bizarre to me. Christmas songs is the one area of music where it doesn't make any difference if the acts are older or not, so long as the songs are catchy, so I don't think that should have anything to do with it.
How is Wizzard no longer one of the top 20 Xmas songs? :( Guess it doesn't resonate much with younger audiences (still more than Slade though, so it continues to win that particular battle...)

Well we all knew from the lower chart positions that the Slade song was getting less popular Christmas by Christmas with younger audiences :( , but I thought the Wizzard song would still be OK, it did pretty well last December in the charts.

Well, Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody has done better in the chart in recent years.

So have all the other Christmas songs. There used to be a time where Slade was in the top 5 Christmas songs, now it's slipped a bit in the rankings as it hasn't aged as well as certain other classics.
It was supposed to be released last Friday but it got indefinitely delayed due to his legal troubles, and now it's been rush released cos it got leaked.

This may be the last album he releases for a long while because it's looking very likely he'll see a lengthy prison sentence (unless the label have enough material to magic up another album while he's in prison).

He should just stop making music full stop

Wizzard's xmas song is the ultimate, feel good, get in the xmas party mood song imo. So to see it not appearing on any of the main playlists really baffles me :(
I don't see the logic behind this - why wouldn't it? Perhaps it's not as noticeable as a Hot Hits UK boost, but do you not think people would hear a song they like on the radio and want to check it out again on Spotify?

Logic would dictate this to be the case, but I'm not convinced. Do you have any examples where it's made any significant impact?

Swish Swish was lingering around #130 until radio airplay kicked in, helping it back up until Hot Hits finally pushed it back into the top 50. Fairly sure Lost Without You was doing decently on Spotify before Hot Hits latched on too (especially considering it's not exactly prime streaming material). The difference is, most songs that get good airplay appear on Hot Hits anyway, certainly as far as Radio 1 and Capital go, so it's quite hard to compare how much is from airplay.

Perhaps they are playlists also promoted in mainland Europe or America (Wizzards' song is only really well known in the UK and maybe Ireland).

Hot Hits is obviously a big factor but airplay is sure to help a fair amount. There’s no way that airplay has ‘no effect’. I can tell you first hand that I’ve heard songs on the radio and gone to stream them if i liked them.
I think streaming is so big that sometimes it's hard to judge the effect airplay may have. Whereas on iTunes where sales are so small, you can see the effect. I could guess what was A-listed by Radio 2 just by looking at the iTunes Top 100 for instance.

They're still both airplay essentials on British radio each Xmas going top 15 every year. Spotify seems US/modern orientated. Would have happened anyway naturally as the tracks get older and older.
