Maroon 5's biggest singles on the Official Chart

14 January 2019 | By Rob Copsey

Maroon 5 have been announced to play this year's Super Bowl half-time show - which hits do you think will make the setlist?

Maroon 5 have been confirmed for the biggest gig of their lives: the 2019 Super Bowl half-time show.

The band will headline the set, alongside rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi, at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on February 3.

The announcement hasn't been without controversy, with calls for them to pull out because of the NFL's stance over some players refusing to stand when the US national anthem is played in protest against the treatment of black people in America.

After President Trump called for players who "disrespect" the US flag to be sacked, the NFL announced it would instead fine players who kneel for the national anthem. In response, this year's Super Bowl performers are making a joint donation with the NFL of $500,000 (£389k) to a social justice cause.

Maroon 5 won't be short of hits for their half-time show, which usually clocks in at around 12 minutes. To date, the group have 21 Top 40 hits, including one chart-topper, plus two Number 1 albums. Look at their complete UK chart history here.

Their biggest hit is their 2011 single Moves Like Jagger, which is one of the UK's bestselling singles of all time despite not reaching Number 1 (it spent seven weeks at Number 2). The Christina Aguilera-assisted track has shifted 1.86m combined sales, split between 1.54m downloads and 32.3m streams.

The band's second biggest hit in the UK is Sugar (1.37m). The track peaked at Number 7 but logged an impressive 27 weeks inside the Top 40 in 2015. Meanwhile, their only UK Number 1 to date, Payphone, is in third (1.16m).

One of Maroon 5's early hits, 2004's She Will Be Loved, places fourth on their all-time chart with combined sales of 960k. The song was key in helping their debut album Songs About Jane to Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart, which reached the top spot 31 weeks after its release - around the time of the single reached Number 4.

The group's most recent single, Girls Like You ft. Cardi B, rounds out their Top 5 on 844k. The single's combined downloads and streaming figure is boosted significantly by its music video, which went viral and finished as the UK's most viewed video of 2018 thanks to its numerous female guest stars; including Camila Cabello, Sarah Silverman, Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Lopez and Rita Ora.

Further down Maroon 5's all-time Top 20, their breakout hit This Love ranks tenth (539k), and 2007's Won't Go Home Without You places 20th. The track, lifted from their It Won't Been Soon Before Long album, is one of only three singles by the band to miss the UK Top 40 after topping out at 44.

I forgot how big 'Sugar' was. I'm surprised 'Maps' has sold more than 'This Love' but it was a low sales period during 2004.

For what it's worth I really do think their recent singles are mostly their 'best', I know I'm the only person in the world with that opinion but that list has become a lot more tolerable with additions like 'Sugar', 'Don't Wanna Know', 'Cold' and even 'Girls Like You' really. 'What Lovers Do' was still as garbage and unlistenable as all their older stuff though.

Still one of my all time favourite groups even though their last album was shocking. Their first two albums are extremely special to me.

I’d have loved to have seen the sales of She Will Be Loved without streaming.

Amazing to see Won’t Go Home Without You top 20 considering it missed the top 40 in 2007.

Girls Like You is such a bland and dire track, I can’t believe it’s done so well.

Quite like a lot of those - I'd say my top 5 Maroon 5 singles are:

1. This Love

2. Animals

3. What Lovers Do

4. Maps

5. Payphone

Cold, Sugar and She Will Be Loved would be just behind. :)

My favs are:

1. Sunday Morning

2. Sugar

3. This Love

4. She Will Be Loved

5. Payphone

It continues to amaze me how poor the Rihanna collaboration did considering they were both on top of their commercial game at the time.

I was about to say the same thing! I remember seeing the video on The Hits (now 4Music) for the first time back in the day, convinced it would be a number one as Rihanna had not long had 'Umbrella' out and Maroon 5 had released 'Makes Me Wonder' (my favourite song of theirs) which was a huge hit for them, so its flop surprised me.

Had they released it just a few years later after 'Moves Like Jagger' and when Rihanna was riding an even higher crest of a wave with her 'Loud' album it might have been a different story!

I think that Maroon 5/Rihanna collaboration is generally universally regarded as being dire.

It was basically a later single from Maroon 5's later album though, they'd already released a follow-up to 'Makes Me Wonder' which went low top 40 by that point. Rihanna was still building her name as a force to be reckoned with, although 'Umbrella' was the first step to helping cement her.

Confirmation that your ears don’t work - you’ve just singled out their worst ever singles as tolerable and then What Lovers Do is actually their best from the last era

I still think 'She Will Be Loved' is Maroon 5's biggest well known song in the UK? It completely passed me by how massive 'Sugar' actually was :o

If my ears don't work then it's because of being exposed to their older songs x

the M5/riri song flopped cos it was bad, a bit like Rihanna's collaboration with Shakira, even if you put 2 big names together, it the song is terrible, won't be a superhit

M5 really have a mix of great and not so great tracks

from recent material I really liked Animals, which was a #3 in the US but flopped in the UK

Probably because the song is regarded as being very mediocre.

(also agree with the person above me liking it to the Shakira collaboration).

I wish. Have you not seen what their highest seller is? xxx

It didn't exactly "flop", underwhelming peak yes but it spent a long while in the chart.

Wasnt IINSYFA like the 20th single of rihannas GGGB album which probably would have affected it due to the album being massive.

Also its crazy to think yhey have only had 1 number 1 but have 3 millionsellers/ millionaires especially when you compare to westlifes 14 number 1s and zero millionaires, you cant even say its down to streaming as most of maroon 5 biggest were in the download era
