Everything she has released after No tears left to cry has been a let down tbh.

I'm slightly surprised the hype is still there for each new song when her output has been decidely dodgy. It does feel like radio and the industry want her songs to succeed no matter what the quality. I guess we have been so starved of a new proper superstar artist for so long everyone has decided Ariana is it.

thank u, next has been an undeniably popular song with the GP anyway though - it's a phrase I see quoted ALL over my timeline, undoubtedly one of the biggest hits of 2018 in terms of cultural impact. The song itself is solid for me, not her very best but a great song regardless. I think it's harsh and slightly unfair to say it's not genuine popularity with that song because it really did catch on in a massive way.

Dodgy to you...Thank U Next was one of the biggest off the bat hits for a female artist with no support ever. It went straight to #1 on Spotify before it was even added to any playlists. I think you’re basing this just off the songs not clicking with you personally which is why it doesn’t quite make sense.

Does anyone think Thank U, Next was a great song though?

I just think the music isn't matching the chart placings or hype right now.

I'm no Gaga fan but I recognise her imperial phase she released some great songs, same with Rihanna. Ariana seems to be getting the hits without the quality being there.

It’s one of the best songs of 2018? Loads of people love it, clearly  again, this is your personal dislike of a song driving the narrative.

Getting back to decent music though - 1975 with a great performance on Graham!

Clearly loads of people do, it wouldn't have been anywhere near as huge otherwise.

I really want to believe ariana is a fantastic artist but she sings so high that a lot of the time i have no idea what she singing, she should come with subtitles

I think if Ariana wasn't as huge as she's been this past year, there wouldn't be as much of a backlash against her on pop forums. Now that's she's almost in the Drake territory of everything she releases being huge, the hype is going to naturally seem disproportionate to the quality, and the idea of her being massively overrated will be thrown around frequently.

Don't get me wrong, I get kinda where people are coming from, in that nothing she's released this past few months has matched the quality of No Tears Left To Cry, but I think a lot of the comments slating her recent output are pretty overblown and exaggerated, and I feel that wouldn't be the case if she wasn't so commercially massive right now.

I’d actually say that ‘thank u, next’ was the biggest song of 2018 in terms of cultural impact and rightfully so.

So what cultural impact has the song had?

So what cultural impact has the song had?

I see "thank u, next" used on Twitter on a daily basis now, often in a context entirely unrelated to Ari because the phrase has caught on. There were also so many "one taught me love, one taught me patience and one taught me pain" memes going around when it came out. As far as cultural impact goes, I'd say the only song that really rivals it from last year is In My Feelings.

....

Fab to see Mabel doing so well atm, hope this can be a big hit for her 😍

The irony x :kink:

That is like saying Who let the dogs out or Crazy frog were quality songs because they were huge.

I have no doubt Ariana is culturally hugely revelant, It is like every girl having red hair like Rihanna had, only Rihanna had Only Girl, What's my name, Love the way you lie etc.

Ariana is succeeding for me because she’s showing off her versatility.

NTLTC would’ve probably went to #1 any other week last year and it’s a shame it missed out but for me she’s been long over due this kind of success what she’s getting and im pleased she’s released such a variation of music this past year too. One song like NTLTC is amazing as is one song like thank u next I’d only have an issue if she was getting huge hit after huge hit with no growth or personality being there and she definitely has both of those things in abundance.

Manchester has also probably helped her UK sales and profile out too but I don’t think it’s just down to that as she seems to be the #1 artist everywhere at the moment.

Ariana just needs a huge album now. In terms of singles success she’s kinda at the level of those two at their peaks but I wouldn’t put her on their level asa whole.

With Gagas imperial phase that album sold 3 million copies just in the UK and Rihanna’s Loud sold 2 million plus GGGB if you class that as her phase is very close to being on 2 million or has just recently done that.

I hope that with AG5 Ariana can get that huge album. Not that her albums haven’t been big but I guess non chart followers would assume they’d sold a lot more.

This is nothing new tbh. The charts have always been like that.

For me I don't think her music is that bad, it's just tiring to hear constantly and in my case it's all by accident/force. She will always have my respect for how she dealt with the Manchester attacks but on the music side of things like I said earlier in the thread she just needs to chill with the wave of new music.
