4th. Rain = 5 votes

Welcome to Round 11 of Madonna's "Something To Remember" survivor poll and we finally say goodbye to 'Rain' (my personal favourite from this collection), which has come close to getting the boot in the last couple of rounds, but this time its received the highest amount of votes with 5, battling it out with 'You'll See' which gained 4, while 'Live To Tell' got 2, 'Crazy For You' was the only song not to gain a single vote and both of which finish in the final 3, which is kinda funny considering that not only these 2 already featured in 'The Immaculate Collection" poll and neither song managed to get this far, 'CFY' got booted in the 5th round, while 'LTT' bowed out in the 7th round, it wouldn't be a surprise if they became the final 2 this time round.

'Rain' - released in August 1993 as the 5th international & 4th American single from her fifth studio album 'Erotica' and was written and produced by Madonna and Shep Pettibone. A pop ballad with influence from trip hop and new-age music, "Rain" features a more "friendly" composition than the other singles released from the album. It received a positive critical reception and was noted as an exceptional ballad amongst the overtly sexual content on the album. The song was a commercial success upon release by reaching a #14 peak in the USA and fared even better worldwide by reaching #7 in the UK, becoming the album's 3rd biggest hit over there (behind the title track & 'Deeper And Deeper'), as well as top 10 peaks in Canada, Australia, Finland, Ireland & Italy. Quite a feat considering that not only it came out so late into the era, and 5 months after the last single & even longer in the USA with a 6 month wait.

In my opinion 'Rain' is the absolute best on not only this collection, but on the 'Erotica' as well and maybe if it got released sooner as maybe the 3rd or 4th single, than it could lessened the harsh backlash the album had received and turned things around a lot sooner, as it does show another side to the album, a more softer and beautiful number because there is a hopeful optimism in it, along with the wonderful music video that's beautifully striking and expertly shot with Madonna going for that new age vibe (definitely one of her best). Shame this song doesn't get more remembered, but considering the extensive back catalogue she's got, some gems are bound to get lost in the shuffle. So on the whole this song is still a fresh and timeless beauty that's more than welcomed addition to this wonderful collection of songs.

So now then guys we are now in the semi final and down to our final 3, "You'll See", "Crazy For You" & "Live To Tell", same rules apply just vote for your Least Fave by the next round which will be the all important final, so choose your vote wisely.

Rain is my favourite Madonna ballad, and tbh is up there as one of my overall favourite Madonna songs. It seems pretty underrated which is unfortunate, it deserves more love. Glad to see it's your fave too, Sam!

Voting for You'll See!

Rain as a song and video is such a highlight.

I am pretty sure that Rain outsold all the erotica singles in the UK. A magnificent achievement for a 5th single. This should have been the 3rd release after deeper and deeper.

Did it really? I'm not so sure on that one, can't imagine it outsold Erotica itself. I do agree it should have been an earlier single release though.

Oh and, as much as I hate to leave these things with the two obvious choices, it's You'll See for me also this time.

I wouldn't say so, I've found it gets a lot of adoration. I personally find it to be more on the overrated side if anything; it is a beauty but I wouldn't call it one of her top ballads.

According to the OCC's last Madonna Top 40 countdown, 'Rain' is indeed the best seller from the Erotica period. Very impressive! :o

I also agree that an 'Erotica' -> 'Deeper & Deeper' -> 'Rain' singles run would have been best, although I am a big fan of 'Bad Girl' and it's video.

Going for 'You'll See' this time, and looking at her UK sales 'Erotica' - 140k, 'Deeper And Deeper' - 136k & 'Rain' - 130k, are these wrong.

But as for worldwide sales, 'Rain' is the 2nd most successful behind the title track =

'Erotica' - 1,325,000

'Rain' - 950,000

'Deeper and Deeper' - 775,000

'Bad Girl' - 575,000

'Fever' - 175,000

'Bye Bye Baby' - 75,000

Thought so

They're not wrong, they're just 10 years out of date.

Ahhhhh well that makes more sense then, I always associate the sales of the time with the tracks. Realistically these days "sales" represent whatever playlists things are curated on, I can't imagine Erotica being on any at all where as I'd imagine Rain could feature (although I'm not an authority by any means!) so I'd still sort of argue that it's not genuinely necessarily any more popular.

I personally find it to be more on the overrated side if anything; it is a beauty but I wouldn't call it one of her top ballads.

Anyone having this opinion is enough to verify for me that it is in fact underrated x :kink:

I just mean in the sense that if a “best of Madonna” discussion crops up it’s very rarely one of the first titles on most people’s minds, in the context of her entire discography it always comes across to me as being a bit of an afterthought - a sort of “oh yeah, Rain, I do like that one actually~” moment.

Yes I guess that's quite true, it is more when the discussion of ballads specifically comes up that the appreciation is shown. There's definitely a selection of members here that give very vocal praise to the song though.
