Biography

 

Streatham, South London-born grime artist Dave (aka Santan Dave) may only have been 16 when he entered the grime spotlight, but his conscious lyrical style made him sound well beyond his years. Growing up, Dave was inspired to pursue art in some form. Taking cues from his older brothers, he initially tried his hand at animation before moving on to piano before finally settling on becoming a fully-fledged grime MC; unfortunately, his brothers would end up serving lengthy prison sentences. To cope with the drastic alteration to their lives, Dave burrowed even deeper into his music, causing him to develop a socially aware form of wordplay that set him apart from his peers. Despite starting to write bars around the age of ten, it was six years later that Dave would make his first appearance, freestyling on an underground grime channel, Bl@ckbox, in 2015. In January of the following year Dave returned with his first music video/single "JKYL+HYD," cementing his reputation for deep subject matter and ambitious lyrics. In the following months, Dave delivered two key freestyles on BBC Radio 1. The first was on Semtex's 1Xtra show and the second on Charlie Sloth's Fire in the Booth. A number of singles followed, including a standout collaboration with West London's own rising star, AJ Tracey, on "Thiago Silva." By September Dave was ready to drop his first EP, Six Paths. Norwegian pop singer/songwriter Sigrid followed her elder siblings into the music business, signing a major-label deal with Island at just 20 years of age. Born Sigrid Solbakk Raabe on September 5, 1996 into a music-loving family and brought up in the sunny seaport of Ålesund in western Norway, about 300 miles from Oslo, she was the youngest of three siblings, each of whom had their own musical career. Her sister Johanne was a classically trained singer who had studied in Italy and Spain, while her brother Tellef had tasted indie success at home with his own band. Growing up influenced by classic artists like Joni Mitchell, Chet Baker, and Neil Young, she was taught to play the piano at an early age by her grandmother and guitar by her brother, and for ten years was a dancer, studying several different styles.

 

After a stint in her brother's band, Sigrid turned her hand to songwriting and launched her solo career in October 2013 at the tender age of 16 with the single "Sun," which saw her featured on NRK's (Norwegian state television) hip tastemaker show Urørt (Untouched). Two further singles, "Two Fish" and "Known You Forever," alongside spellbinding performances at several major European music festivals, sealed her reputation as a superbly talented songwriter and performer. With her rich, powerful, versatile voice and elfin good looks, she seemed ready-made for pop superstardom, and the ensuing bidding war finally saw her signed to Island. She delivered on the promise with her epic, anthemic debut single for the label, "Don't Kill My Vibe," released in February 2017. Co-written and produced by Martin Sjølie (Ella Henderson, Sam Smith), it was unveiled with much fanfare on BBC Radio 1, becoming their "Hottest Record in the World," and immediately racked up millions of plays on streaming services. In 2016, Khalid Robinson was voted Most Likely to Go Platinum by his high school class. About a year later, he proved them right. A military kid, Robinson split his childhood between Georgia, Kentucky, upstate New York, and Heidelberg, Germany, eventually settling in El Paso, Texas—a pattern of dislocation that often made him feel like an outsider. Self-described as “an awkward teen,” he picked up songwriting primarily to stave off loneliness, sharing music through SoundCloud and quickly catching the ears of both his peers and the industry. (His breakout single, 2016’s “Location,” was recorded during spring break of his senior year; a few weeks after it came out, he won Prom King; within a couple of years, the song had sold more than five million copies in the U.S. alone.) In 2017, he released American Teen, a celebratory but bittersweet mix of synth-pop and neon-lit R&B that garnered five Grammy nominations—proof that you’re rarely an outsider alone. An EP, Suncity, arrived in late 2018, opening with audio of Khalid being given keys to the city of El Paso—not bad for a kid who’d moved there only a few years before. Quite possibly the key player in U.K. grime -- though he called his knotty, brittle style "eski" or "eskibeat" -- producer and MC Wiley (born Richard Cowie) came up as a member of Pay as U Go Cartel, and was later a founding member of Roll Deep Crew. Much of his best and most crucial early work as a producer trickled out as white-label vinyl releases and free downloads. After Treddin' on Thin Ice (XL, 2004) and Playtime Is Over (Big Dada, 2007), a pair of strong albums, Wiley made a controversial crossover move with his third proper album, See Clear Now (Asylum, 2008). Released on a major label, it had a considerably larger recording budget than his previous output and featured production input from Mark Ronson and Arthur Baker, among others. The bouncy single "Wearing My Rolex" reached number two on the U.K. singles chart.

 

In addition to being prolific as a producer and solo artist, Wiley continued to assist the careers of producers and MCs younger than him, including onetime Roll Deep partner Dizzee Rascal. He reached the Top Ten again as a featured artist on Naughty Boy's "Never Be Your Woman," and continued to lengthen his reach by setting up the A-List label for the development of upcoming talent, as well as Elusive Entertainment, where he issued Chill Out Zone (2011). He returned to Big Dada for 100% Publishing (also 2011), along with Evolve or Be Extinct (2012). He moved back into the major-label system for The Ascent (Warner Music, 2013), the release of which was teased with the fizzy "Heatwave," a number one U.K. hit. Three additional singles from the album reached the Top Ten. Life Is a Game of Snakes & Ladders (Big Dada, 2014), featuring the eskibeat throwback "On a Level," didn't fare nearly as well commercially. Mixtapes, an EP, and a stream of stray tracks all reached the public in the mid-2010s.

 

After the release of Snakes & Ladders, Wiley appeared to go quiet for a couple of years. In 2016, he returned in a big way; he announced his 11th studio album, Godfather, as well as his autobiography, in addition to plans to release a feature-length autobiographical film. Godfather was delayed numerous times and was even scrapped at one point, but it finally arrived in January of 2017. Eskiboy, Wiley's autobiography, was released the following November, as the MC/producer released the single "I Call the Shots," featuring JME. Its parent full-length, Godfather II, followed in 2018. - iTunes
