I feel something does need to be done as we're still getting very stagnant charts or at least 'bottlenecks' where a bunch of tracks are bunged up unable to move. What the remedy is though I am unsure of!

Maybe if a user was capped to just 10 streams of a song in its lifetime then songs would naturally fall away quicker. I suspect many streams of Ladbroke Grove etc are from people who have already played it 10 times and still enjoy it so that would naturally be a few places lower without the need for ACR.

This will also somewhat solve the problem the OCC are going to have with just about every Christmas classic coming back to the chart every year.

That’s not a bad idea, reduce the number of streams a person can impact on the charts rather than the current system and the movement would be much better. In the context of iTunes and CDs, we’d only (usually) buy it once and repeat it so maybe 10 streams by one person for one song counts as a sale and that’s it
Is Sorry set to go on ACR anytime soon, could we see about half the top 10 hitting ACR at the same time?

I think that's a great way to solve the issue and it would help level up streaming points aswell.

I suspect if users were capped to 10 streams per song forever it wouldn't change the chart as drastically as some people here would like it to.

The real long runners like Shotgun would be a little bit lower but there'd also be a lot of casual users who enjoy the song and still haven't given it 10 streams yet.

(I still think this is a very good idea, obviously we can't see what the OCC can potentially see so we'll never know for sure but I certainly think it's worth a try)

well maybe I changed my mind a bit. :P

but it’s impossible to say what effect it would have without looking at such data that we don’t have so who knows really.

people have been suggesting this since day 1, same for albums, a proper cap would be much better than ACR, which is totally random...

but I actually think the problem then, weekly "sales" would be much much lower than they already are,

sure if a chunk of streams didn't count for Dance Monkey cos I've streamed it 50 times already, and same for many users, streams would be lower

and the occ doesn't seem to like that...

I actually agreed with danG's original post that Pete quoted above - I doubt a cap would have the intended impact. Think about it like this: with streaming, music consumption is reaching far more people than singles sales (physical or digital) ever did, so that means the average listener is later in discovering songs they like. Those songs which have a larger reach generally take longer to do so - it's not just people streaming the same songs 100 times over.

If the OCC did ever introduce it, I'd say 10 is far too low and could end up turning the chart into Hot Hits and the like from which some people stream every song passively several times a week whether they like them or not, so would soon get to 10 plays on most of their current songs. 20 would be better, but I think the main reason a cap hasn't been implemented is the sheer amount of data to track (every streaming account x every song ever) making it unfeasible - at least for now.

Going back to the thread topic, I think one of the reasons several songs have avoided it for so long is the Bank Holiday weekend 6 weeks ago and the good weather 3 weeks ago, when most of the Top 10 got a boost. It's a bit of a fluke occurrence. I'm actually looking forward to 6 or 7 songs from the top 12 or so going to ACR at the same time next week, as it's never happened before and will make room for some 'fresher' songs (and perhaps Take Me Back To London) to refill the Top 10 in their wake.

^man you're underestimating the power of technology and data analysis, of course they can track and cap what you listen, they already do that, there is already a daily cap, so making a total cap wouldn't make a difference and it's the easiest thing to do
Obviously the streaming companies have that data but would need the incentive from the OCC to use it in that way. I think the daily cap is different as it's built into existing metrics e.g. weekly Spotify tables already exclude >10 plays a day - but not 100% sure
