August 27, 20195 yr I realise I must seem so negative about her — it's equal amounts of disappointment and confusion. I just don't understand the love, and this video is no different. Perhaps she just needs to release that one song that will make everything click for me, but it hasn't happened yet.
August 27, 20195 yr I’m honestly surprised that Spotify is paying her dust at the moment after the huge support of Sweet But Psycho and So Am I!
August 27, 20195 yr I realise I must seem so negative about her — it's equal amounts of disappointment and confusion. I just don't understand the love, and this video is no different. Perhaps she just needs to release that one song that will make everything click for me, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm going to sound like a complete snob, which isn't intended because I actually have liked her material, but I think it's the complete facelessness of her as an artist. It's very 'seen it all before' without the personality or passion or drive that others have shown. There also doesn't seem to be any artistic journey or correlation - more just three completely different random songs chucked out. The predictable 'I'm a freak' narrative, the 'love yourself' one and now the 'confused lover'. It literally reads like a 'idiots guide to becoming a popstar'. This may be a reach and not warranted for a throwaway popstar but I don't think it's unhealthy to demand more from artists and have high expectations. I do like the music as I've said but this explains why I really do not care for her as an ARTIST. I feel there is a mismatch too because I feel she doesn't want to be throwaway, but her music is lending herself to being so. I can't see an album of hers ever being successful for example because there's just no real truth or substance behind the music (so far!).
August 27, 20195 yr I think Sweet But Psycho took us all back to a certain time where that sort of pop was huge so it was a huge nostalgic trip. To see it actually become a big hit only fed into this idea further that we could perhaps be seeing a return of that pop sound we know and love. Perhaps we got ahead of ourselves thinking Ava could be some sort of "saviour of pop".
August 28, 20195 yr Well this is surprisingly catchy. I also really liked 'So Am I' although that chorus reminded me a bitsy too much of Anastacia's 'Left Outside Alone'.
August 28, 20195 yr I only just realized that this actually samples 'Gimme Gimme Gimme'. I did hear the bleeps and it reminded me of it but I'm surprised to read it's actually a sample. Wonder why they didn't go all out with the sample? Seems a bit of a waste of money this way.

This is definitely it - the Gaga comparisons when Sweet But Psycho came were definitely jumping the gun when 1) Gaga sets the bar for popstars extremely high and 2) we only had one song to judge Ava from. The music she's put out so far have been great and I think all five songs (promo tracks included) would quite easily fit on the same album, they're not that far apart from each other, but I agree with Haus that there's just very little in the way of identity or personality. This song is still absolute top notch pop music though.

ABBA aren't credited anywhere (not on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, Genius, etc) so it's not a sample. It's just a very similar synth line. Madonna (!) had to beg for the sample — I doubt this would have been cleared. Edited August 28, 20195 yr by blacksquare
August 28, 20195 yr ugh the video just cheapened the song for me. I think that's it for her tbh. She won't be able to escape the one hit wonder tag from now and on (I know she had sorta another hit after that but in 10 years from now she will be in one of the One Hit Wonder compilations with Sweet But Psycho).
August 28, 20195 yr 'Torn' makes me think more of 'Scared of the Dark' than it does 'Gimme Gimme Gimme' tbh.
August 29, 20195 yr Climbing really well on iTunes, up to 21. Just waiting for Spotify to catch up now!
